Catalina Castano finished her 2006 season last week in Linz. Some of her highlights included wins over Nicole Vaidisova and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, as well as recording five quarterfinal appearances and one semifinal appearance. The finished the year as the highest ranked South American player.

BUENOS AIRES -- Y llegó la hora del repaso. Terminada la actividad, es tiempo, en esta nota, de realizar un balance de lo que dejó el tenis latinoamericano en este 2007, con alegrías y decepciones.



FEMENIMO
Lo mejor: Gisela Dulko. La argentina, que este año se consagró en dos torneos de la WTA, fue la unica latinoamericana en obtener algún título en singles. El primer trofeo que llevó a sus vitrinas fue el de Budapest. El segundo, en Forest Hills, en uno de los torneos previos al US Open.



De esta forma, Gisela se sacaba la espina de la final perdida en Pattaya a comienzos del año ante la austríaca Sybille Bammer, en un partido en el que la argentina dispuso de varios match-points.


Terminaba entonces la temporada en el puesto numero 37º del ránking mundial, un lugar que, a pesar de no ser el mejor de su carrera, es una muestra de que fue un buen año y que aún puede seguir escalando posiciones.


La gran sorpresa: Mariana Duque Marino. Esta joven colombiana de tan sólo 18 años, consiguió jugar la final de Roland Garros junior y dejó una puerta abierta al tenis femenino colombiano, que desde el retiro de Fabiola Zuluaga tiene como única representante a Catalina Castaño.



La sorpresa 2: Además, en el tenis argentino también surgió una nueva promesa en la figura de Bettina Jozami, que logró dos medallas en los Juegos Panamericanos, tanto en singles como en dobles. Estas dos jóvenes, si bien tienen dos estilos diferentes (Duque es un ajugadora muy talentosa y Jozami es más agresiva, con un gran arma que es su saque), dieron un gran paso en el tenis profesional.



Lo peor: La pobre actuación de Castaño a lo largo de la temporada, donde nunca llegó a encontrar el nivel de juego al que nos tiene acostumbrados a ver en ella. Esperemos que esta temporada sea un punto de inflexión en su tenis y en su ránking. Vamos Cata, que podés!!!



La regularidad: Este fue un gran año para la Pitu María Emilia Salerni, quien consiguió no sólo salir de una racha de lesiones que le impedían una continuidad para llegar a su mejor nivel, sino que además la argentina logró instalarse por primera vez en su carrera dentro de las top-100, a sus 24 años.



El adiós: El mío, con lesiones a cuestas. Estoy muy orgullosa y feliz con mi carrera profesional. Cuando uno se para y mira hacia atrás, se da cuenta de lo conseguido.



Lo curioso: La mala suerte de Milagros Sequera con sus lesiones, que no la dejaron competir con regularidad durante toda una temporada. La venezolana debería seguir mejorand
