oh ye of little faith...
a big BOOOOOOOOOO to her fans who doubted :p
(don't take this seriously comrades ;) )
I knew she would not tank a final due to exhaustion... much less to someone like Nadia whom she has owned... no... Masha wants to keep that mental block in Nadia's head.

Great job angel and better luck next time Nadia...

Nadia died after having the two SP's, her mentality was very, very poor towards the end of the first.

Great couple of weeks for Maria... she didn't even play that well this week either IMO. :scared:

Maria, tired or not, is just ON FIRE. 16 wins in a row, 24 out of her last 25, the US Open, Zurich, and Linz in succession. Holy cow!

And now, the YEC. Maria, you can do it.

The ceremony was nice as were both speeches. It was nice to see Maria and Nadia laughing together.

It was a well played match for the most part, maybe except for when Maria decided she didn't want to lose a 4-2 lead again in the second set. :o :D

Pardon your ignorance, but I am always with Nadia. She choked the first set away when she failed to convert on 2 set points. She also had break points to take the set to a tiebreak. no,this has nothing to do with maria.but how about being more relaxed, when, after a long and hard season, which was still remarkable if you think on her injury,ONE little set,or ONE single Match doesnt go her way??why not rather be proud of what she achieved this year??this is my point.

Sharapova beats Petrova to win Generali Ladies :yeah: :worship:

LINZ, Austria (AP) -- Maria Sharapova won her fifth title of the season Sunday, beating defending champion Nadia Petrova 7-5, 6-2 in the Generali Ladies final and advancing to No. 2 in the rankings.

Sharapova has won 16 straight matches and has not lost since before the start of her successful run to the U.S. Open title.

The top-seeded Russian overtook Justine Henin-Hardenne in the rankings and now trails only Amelie Mauresmo. Sharapova needs to win the season-ending WTA Championship in Madrid, Spain, to finish on top.

"It is my dream to end the year on the No. 1 spot again," Sharapova said. :smash:

Petrova, seeded second, won her first career title in Linz last year.

"I am so disappointed," the Russian said. "I really got my chances in the first set. But after missing them, I just did not play up to my usual standards anymore."

Sharapova dominated from the start, breaking serve in the first game. But at 4-3 she double-faulted and lost her serve. Sharapova then saved two set points and later held serve and broke before serving out the set.

In the first game of the second set, Petrova lost serve again. She then had few chances against Sharapova's strong serve.

"I started very well, but got a bit tired towards the end of the first set," Sharapova said. "Saving the two set points gave me a huge boost. I always play my best tennis when under pressure."

Judging by the scoreline, Petrova played a very good 1st set and blew some chances and then fell apart in the 2nd set. Sharapova besides playing well continues to show that she is just so much more mentally tougher than most players particularly most of the Russians and while their talent level is equal to me, I don't see Petrova beating Sharapova on a major stage anytime soon.

Considering how there isn't a player out there that Maria has yet to beat, it shouldn't be too difficult. She's beaten Clijsters, Mauresmo, and Henin the last time she met them, and honestly, I feel like she's fit enough now to finally contend with them in the third sets. She's beaten Williams X2. She owns Davenport mentally. She owns Dementieva and Petrova. The only player that she is level with right now is Kuznetsova, but a healthy and rested Maria will always have more firepower to blow away Kuznetsova. I like Maria's chances at the YEC and in 2007.

And to think just yesterday I was going "Maria seems completely shot, while Petrova has been walking on water this whole tournament - Petrova is the clear favourite." It seems Maria saved the best for last.

Petrova is a powerful player, yet for most of the match she just watched as Maria's winners whizzed past her. Maybe she made the mistake of thinking that what had been good enough to flatten Vaidisova would be good enough to beat Maria?

Yes, I know, she had setpoints. But those she got on a game in which she hit two very lucky last ditch returns that happened to fall just in. Otherwise she was completely overpowered. And Petrova didn't even play badly (though a higher 1st serve % would have helped). It was just that Maria entered the match determined to show who's boss. Maria hit harder and deeper, controlled most of the rallies and played key points better. One of her best performances this whole season, and certainly the best on this tournament.

This was not a good match. :o But a great result. :yippee:

It was actually a rather good match. Maria's power on the faster surface is what really did Nadia in the end.

so if you say congrats to another player who has beaten your favorite your not a real fan:confused: Dementrov showed he has class by doing that and nobody on this site has worked harder to promote nadia than him even though the bad times after the FO when her form was way off.

sorry, but i have the feel that you guys just WANT to get me wrong!!again,to make it clear for everyone:i respect and honour every fan who is fair enough to congratulate the opponent.in the same way, dementrov is surely doing a great job with his fansite,no doubt.

MY only point is:if you see, what she achieved this year, wouldnt it be fair to say "okay, this ones lost.period."thats all i say...

i hope,i made it clear now...

A brilliant win, Maria! :clap2:

like several others i thought Nadia was playing in such dominating style, and Maria had had such a series of hard matches in the earlier rounds, that this could be Nadia's chance.

But Maria came out fighting and really showed her mettle and mental strength.

A well-deserved win. Keep it up in Maria.
