We've had so many threads about this but here goes.
As of NOW, these players have the best serves: Sharapova, Petrova, Nicole, Serena, Molik with the latter two not as good as they once were but still one of the best.
Second tier: Davenport (really weak for her standards since her injury), Stosur, Justine, Clijsters, Ivanovic, Mauresmo, Kuznetsova
Third tier: Santangelo, Krajicek, Schiavone, Hantuchova, Venus

I probably forgot some.

Brenda Schultz still has the biggest serve on tour.

Fastest is biggest? Her serves aren't that wellplaced from what I've seen.

Nicole hit 33 aces in two matches this week. Problem is reliability.

Even today, Venus' first serve is huge. But again, problem is reliability.

Same with Ana Ivanovic, though her usually dismal 1st serve % seems to be increasing.

Petrova's serve may not be the biggest (though it comes close), but she uses it very effectively. Petrova is immensely difficult to break.

But for overall reliability, hard to beat Sharapova's serving in San Diego and at the USO. Still serving at a very high standard over the past few weeks, though not quite as impressively.

Speed isn't everything. IIRC, the fastest serve during RG this year was hit by Venus on her QF vs Nicole - yet Nicole returned it and won that point. Plus Nicole's and Sharapova's serves aren't supersonic, yet they win many free points off them.

Brenda Schultz still has the biggest serve on tour.

And Venus and Serena are both right behind her with 127mph serves. Petrova, Alicia, and Ivanovic can also serve in the 120's. A lot of the other girls named can't serve over 120mph.

Didnt Serena hit a 129? And why would u classify Ana as the best serve on tour?

Yep.

Cause she does average in the 120's and for her age that is impressive!

Serena.

I was wondering because I was watching Serena/Ivanovic at this year's Us Open and does Serena serve higher than 100 mph on her secod serve b/c she hit some powerful second serves in that amtch...

Increasingly over 2006, Pova has developed the most effective serve in terms of winning crucial points under pressure and delivering games, sets and wins.

The fastest serves may be individually impressive strokes but they are rare and seldom contribute to winning! The fastest servers are not highly ranked in either the men's or women's side. There is more to serving than speed.

Throughout all of Ana's matches at the US Open this year.. Her fastest serve was 114 mph.. and she averages only 102-104 mph on 1st serve.. Thats no where near the 120's

BIGGEST does not mean best OVERALL (1st and 2nd included) It means the FASTEST, and it that case it would be: Breana, VENUS, and Serena!! Ugh! Stupid people!

OK. It's a statistical "victory". But none of those three have had any impact on recent tennis. Everybody needs something, I suppose.

I don't understand, if the thread starter wanted fastest, why didn't he just say fastest serve?

Lindsay doesn't have the fastest serve by any means, but it's the placement that makes (or made...) it so good.

Fastest is Brenda and the WS.

#1. Brenda Schultz-McCarthy 130MPH
#2. Venus Williams 127MPH
#3. Serena Williams 126MPH

I didn't think it was open to debate - those are the facts right???

And incidentally... Venus & Serena still serve in the 120's.

actually, this summer, Serena served 127 too

Stosur has a massive serve if you don't just look at the speed. It's a really really heavy serve. The problem is the consistency

"Made it" is correct.

Her serve has been ineffective for over a year.

Ana hit a 123mph bomb at Roland Garros this year.

and ana hit fastest serves last year at wimbledon and roland garros(if I remember well 196&198 kmh??)

i'm not that surprised that ana can hit serves in the 190kph range. she has the height & strength 2 do those fast bombs.

Brenda, Williams Sisters, Stevenson (produces a lot of aces during her matches, but not exactly sure how fast her serves are)

I guess it all depends on how one defines "biggest".

Almost every time Fed-Ex and Roddick have played, Federer has out-aced Andy. I suppose if you want to continue to claim that Andy has a "bigger" serve than Roger, you are free to. But if you can't turn that "bigness" into actual results on the court, what is the difference?

Right now, no one serves bigger than Masha, in the sense that on important points she is usually money with her serve. She doesn't have to load up 20 aces a match. She wins tons of easy points, many when they count most.

But, yeah, if you are looking for the person who can hit it the hardest, that would be Schultz-McCarthy.
