Go mary...ai played pretty solid against dani last week so mary has to play aggressive and with a good portion of patience! Otherwise I think this is the best draw in a long time. I hope mary will play some double again in Linz!

Yay!!! It's rad that she's levelled with Ai! She used to have som much trouble with Ai in the past! I was reading an article about her win and they were like "It's doubtful that Mary will crack the top 20 again". I can't believe they would say that after all Mary has done in her career! This is especially good because she beat Ai! and Ai is tough!

MARY PIERCE POSTS A WIN: It's doubtful that proud Mary will ever crack the Top 20 again, but her two-tiebreak win over Ai Sugiyama showed that she's still game. http://www.********************/hit_list_102406.html

i just watched the entire match on youtube and i feel quite positive about tomorrow's match. mary dictated almost every point. it was kinda like a "will she hit a winner, will she make an error?" kind of situation. some of the errors she made were stupid for her standards so i think that she will learn from them for tomorrow's match against vera. i think i read somewhere that she hit 41 winners and 40 errors which kinda tells the story of the match

her second serve keeps getting better and better. in san diego it was awful and since then it has only improved. im surprised she only hit one ace (her last serve of the match might i add! :p) but i think she will sort that for tomorrow as well.

overall, a very strong match. mary moved pretty well and clawed her way back in to both sets and won most of the important points (not counting her blip while serving for the match  )

i hope she plays well tomorrow. good luck mary :D

by the way, she looked great too ;)

I'm a bit worried....i think mary acted a bit strange on court when she was playing sugiyama. She wasn't positive, she looked sometime like she didn't care at all and like she didn't even wanted to be out there. And man, her forehand wasn't working well but her backhand was awesome. I just hope she will be more like she use to be tomorrow against Vera. She has to play better then that.

I agree. It seemed like the player was not Mary at all. Hopefully with the win she will gain confidence. Her backhand was on fire. Her forehand was really inconsistent. I am really concerned. I don't think she will win against Zvonereva but I really hope she does. This match is important for her confidence. The last point of the first set was amazing.

Mark, you have to watch it.. It's just shocking because she screams so much.. And it really hurts to hear that.. As I'm studying sport science I'm used to such things.. From SI.com:

1999 Linz champ Mary Pierce had to be carried off the court on a stretcher after hurting her left knee in a fall while she was on the brink of beating Vera Zvonareva in the last match of the day.

Pierce led Zvonareva 6-4, 6-5, had rallied from a break down in each set and missed three match points when she fell behind the baseline and had to retire.

The left knee injury was a cruel blow for the two-time Grand Slam champion, who was playing only her eighth tournament this year after right foot injuries.

Yes, I was feeling the same way. God knows Mary was gonna win, but instead creat such a pain for her to suffer. Now who knows how long the road to recovery is.
The scream is just too terrifying and haunting to my heart.
I hope once she gets well, she'll just enjoy the money and fame she earned with her sweat. She shouldn't hv to play if she if hv the slightest thought of stopping. She really doesn't deserve that kind of pain anymore.

Look at what she went thru today, it was just f-ing brutal. Just pain in my heart. She really tried hard enough, way more than enough.

Thought I'd post another message with my fellow Mary fans.

First of all, the injury was too horrific to watch. I'm sorry I did because that just makes me sad and heartbroken to see one of the nicest ladies on tour suffer yet another crushing punishment. Just when I thought that things were back on the up-slope, this happens. In my heart, I am sad for her and want her to return as soon as possible when she recovers. Realistically though, I agree with the previous poster...I think she has endured too much pain and recoveries to come back to the tour. It's painful to hear and to watch everytime she gets injured. The selfish side of me wants her to come back next year, but the good side of me thinks she should retire to preserve her body from more catastrophic and painful events. Realistically (and from trying to translate the little french I know from the Eurosport broadcast), I think the reality is that the injury might be career ending. If it is, I know Mary would make the decision with peace and contentment in her heart, and that's what's important. I'm sure Clijsters knows what Mary is going through and hence her decision to retire after next season.

I wish Mary all the best for her recovery and hope that her decision is best for her!!

LINZ, Austria (AFP) - The career of top French tennis player Mary Pierce is on the line as she faces knee surgery following a heavy fall at the WTA Linz tournament.

The 31-year-old former Australian and French Open champion fell heavily after her left knee gave way while playing Russia's Vera Zvonareva in a second round match on Thursday.

World number 29 Pierce was leading 6-4, 6-6 and had had three match points in the previous game before collapsing in the tiebreak. She cried out in pain and was shortly afterwards taken off court on a stretcher.

A spokeswoman for Linz General Hospital confirmed Pierce had come to the hospital around midnight to undergo exams, including X-rays.

Doctors found she had torn the front cruciate ligament on her left knee and recommended she be operated on but she has since left the hospital, perhaps to have surgery in France.

French radio stations were speculating on the possible end of Pierce's career early Friday.

Ok this sucks. My five favourite players are Kim Clijsters, Mary Pierce, Jelena Dokic, Nadia Petrova and Elena Dementieva.

Kim and Mary are soon to retire and both Clijsters and Pierce seem to get injuries just for breathing.

Jelena Dokic rarely even picks up a tennis racquet anymore.

Elena Dementieva is an under achieved player and is wildly inconsistant.

Nadia Petrova is another under achieved player but she seems to be in good form at the moment.

Why must these things happen to my favourite players?

i was just looking at an online medical website, wanting to know the exact same thing and i found this.

How long will the athlete be out of action?

This largely depends on your surgeon or physiotherapists approach to rehabilitation. Some therapists advocate an accelerated rehabilitation programme returning the athlete to full competition within 5 months, others prefer a 9 month rehabilitation period.http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/knee/anteriorcruciate.htm

I was watching these horrible scenes live in Linz and I have to say that I´m still shocked and sad. Everything seemed to turn out fine at the end of the second set, when this happened. What was really bad was, that Vera Zvonareva was the only one who reacted properly and tried to help her immediately. The officials and the medical staff were far too slow, as they needed some minutes to appear.

I would like to use this platform to wish you all the best, that you may recover quickly and I´m hoping to see you next year back in Linz!

Injured Pierce out for six months

Pierce was taken off court on a stretcher in Linz
Mary Pierce faces six months out of action after collapsing with a knee injury at the Generali Ladies event in Linz, Austria, on Thursday.
The 31-year-old Frenchwoman fell heavily after her left knee gave way while playing Russia's Vera Zvonareva.

Pierce has torn the front cruciate ligament on her left knee and will require surgery.

"It's tough it's but not the end of the world," said fitness coach Xavier Moreau after fears for Pierce's career.

"It's a pity because Mary is feeling great these days.

"She's still in Linz waiting for them to fit a knee brace but we will try to get her back to France as quickly as possible to see Dr Montalvon (French tennis federation doctor).

If you want to see the video with Mary injuring her knee and the medics helping her onto the stretcher and taking her out watch this video.

It's just awful and at this stage in her career too. I hope the surgery goes well and she is such a resiliant lady that I'm sure she will do everything necessary to return to the sport. She'll be missed while she's out but it's not the end!

Just saw the video... I could tell the instant it went, and it brought back ugly memories from twenty years ago...
Her response certainly wasn't exaggerated, I know for certain. It hurts like hell.
Get well, sweetheart, and listen to your therapists, especially the ones who push you.

Go, Mary Caroline, go.
