That's a tough first round against Srebotnik, semi-finalist in Zurich this week. Kata's been putting in some very good performances recently, but so has Anya.

That's not the easiest draw she could have got but I think she can defeat Srebotnik if she plays like she did in Moscow :bounce: :bounce: Her win in Moscow must have given her a lot of confidence so I think Anna will go far in this tournament!   Davai Anna!! :bounce:

Very difficult first match. But I don't care how she does here. Winning Moscow makes any bad result the rest of the year irrelevant in my eyes.

But I hope Anna does well.

Szebotnik might be tired after a long week in Zurich
If Anna beats Nadia again, she'll be top 5 next year

If Anna wins Linz, expectations for her will be off the charts.
No matter how she does, she is finishing 2006 on a great run

Anya backs up her Moscow win with a first ever victory over last week's Zurich semifinalist. This extends her winning streak to 10 in a row! :)

She started off a bit rusty and her serve wasn't working too well. Neither was Kata's so they exchanged a few breaks at the beginning. Anya seemed to improve, however, as the match went on. Eventually she was hitting some lovely crosscourt forehands and passing shots. She was returning serve amazingly well at the end of the match. Kata didn't seem that enthused about the match.

There was a delay as Anya was serving for the match when one of the animated advertising hoardings, which are supposed to be switched off during play, changed its display during the first point of the game. The umpire asked for it to be switched off and Anya entertained herself while they waited with a bit of keepy-uppy, garnering a small ripple of applause from the very sparse crowd.

It's what soccer players and kids do to show off or waste time. You keep the ball from touching the ground using any part of your body except for your arms. I'm sure there's loads of examples on youtube. Anna was just kicking the tennis ball up in the air.

As Anna herself said, you can't really count the walkover as a victory because the match never happened. ;)

This loss doesn't really matter. Winning Moscow trumps her results the rest of the year in my opinion.

I'm a little mad only because I picked her in suicide tennis. But that is a purely selfish reason to be mad.
