View Full Version : Wednesday Report And Photos

There was a crazy idea occuring on Monday: Let's go to Stuttgart and back from my city Aachen in one day by car, without sleeping in any kind of hotel or so.
Being crazy about tennis I directly accepted it, though I was not so sure about how it shall work at all firstly...

So I went to my buddy at 5 AM yesterday by car and we met another friend, who was going with us, who had to drive 1,5 hours only to get to Aachen. Then we started our trip - some traffic jam including - and searched for the arena in Stuttgart for like one hour. The streets were very full there, but we finally got to the arena, which looked impressive to us:

The older part of the area is the old Hans-Martin-Schleier-Hall, where one practise court is located at plus Court 1. There are also some brands except for Babaolat and Yonex. All in all it is a nice venue. :)

We always switched between the matches and the practise courts to get a good overview on the players and also to get the one or other autograph. ;) I will first tell you about it the way we did it chronlogically, hope you won't be confused. ;)

First of all we saw Petrova practising on Court 1 and she seemed to have a lot of fun. They shared the court with Pironkova, who was more seriously - understandable due to her upcoming match.

Then we saw Patty Schnyder playing on the Practise Court with a strange-looking hitting partner. She practised quite a lot of high balls which she tried to make winners of.

Then Elena Likhovtseva and Janette Husarova practised. Likki was talking to Schnyder and having fun and signed an autograph for me later on.

On the CC, Dementieva was practising. I don't know the player on the left though. :(

Then we watched our first match: Pironkova-Sprem. Sprem had an outfit which looked like others' nightsuits. It was luaghable. And her game was also. Errors over errors gave Pironkova the first set easily. We left after that.

Following that, we saw the first and third set of Hantuchova-Bammer. Danka started strong, but from the end of the first set on she was spraiding more errors and from then on it was a really close, though not good match.
The microphone you can see on the pic does not only disturb the pic, but also the spectators in the lower rows like ours. :(

In the second set, we were lurking around and watched Katarina Srebotnik and Dinara Safina practise together. Srebotnik looked very good, espacially half-court balls were very impressive. I got Safinas autograph, I thanked her and she smiled nicely at me. :)

Then, Mary Pierce and Jelena Jankovic moved on the court. They had to play their match later, but practised on the same court! Very weird situation. When Jelena arrived, Pierce tried to impress with a lot of hard-hitting. Jelena sometimes took a very quick look over to her, it was funny to watch from the side. They played with male hitting partners each. I think Mary has gained a bit of weight compared to last year, but she is still looking like she enjoy to play.

For a short time we watched the doubles with Elena Likhovtseva and Janette Husarova. They were quickly down 0-2, but then regrouped to win. We left after like 3-2 or so... Santangelo is so slim!

The next match on the court was Dementieva-Srebotnik. It was a good match, but Srebotnik really should have won it. She didn't give it away and fought brilliantly even after tough decisions against her, but in the end of the second set she made some easy errors at the return which probably cost her the victory. It was close to three hours. One of my friends was for her, and one of them and me were for Srebotnik. I was very surprised at how calm she stayed throughout the match despite of being up 4-1 and despite of some tough decisions. Props to her and also for Dementieva, who fought through cramps towards the end of the match.
Tzvetana Pironkova was sitting in front of su and watched the match from 4-1 Srebotnik 2nd set. I guess she wanted to watch Pierce-Jankovic, because the winner would face her in the next round, she only watched three games of that match though - I guess 'cuz the one before was so long.

Due to length of the match we were walking around again, also waiting for Amelie Mauresmos autograph session. Shahar Peer and Tatiana Golovin were playing and one ball went forth and back like 300 times or so, it was really amazing. :p
Amelie did come like 40 minutes late and it was not a well-organized session, because everybody wanted to get to her, but there was no order. Exactly when I was in front of her they stopped the session and I was very sad. :( She continued to sign one or two things and there were only like 20 guys left so I couldn't understand the action. It was not Amelie's fault though...
We also took some pics of us with those big racquets. :D
Plus there was Kuznetsova playing with Benesova, but they were a very uneven practise-coupel.

The last match for us and also the match of the day was Jelena Jankovic vs. Mary Pierce. The first set was some of the best women's tennis I have seen in a long time. Very much hard-hitting and also great defensive skills, Mary enjoyed it a lot I think, smiling over and over again. Both also applauded to each other and had a warm handshake I heard later on (we needed to leave at 4-3 second set Jankovic). :)

I must say it was a great day, although quite stressful due to the long journey to Stuttgart. I got some more autographs, but I cannot remember when and how. :p

After that, we left Stuttgart quickly after a short visit at a fuel station and at a McDonalds some km further. :p We were back in Aachen quite early despite of a traffic jam. I think I never saw more trucks standing on the two right tracks than yesterday.

Thanks again Daniel and Jan for a nice day (although I am not sure whether they post here, but they will read the thread anyways :p ).
