did Safina have any problem???
this score it's not normal...it should have been tight

Indeed, Dinara had problems with her feet (or with one foot). At 0:3 first set the doctor came and taped her toes.
Daniela was playing ok, but many many errors from Dinara.

Great win there 4 dani. congrats 2 her 4 reaching the quarters at this prestigious event & beating a top 10 player in safina. this performance i hope will give her the confidence 2 go further in the draw & 4 the rest of the season & her career. she has got 2 be happy with this at the moment.

commiserations 2 dinara. don't think she was at her top level t'day even as her debut as a top 10 player. but take nothin away from dani, she just played brilliantly.

Excellent performance from Dani, and it was good to see her keep her composure when closing out both sets. :D

Safina looked a little slow and heavy-footed, but overall she was just outplayed.

It;s not too surprising given Daniela's talent. When she's playing her best she can beat anybody.

Oct 6th, 2006, 03:11 AM
Best I've ever seen Danka play.

People who didn't watch the match will look at the score and you think "It must have been an error fest, and Safina must have played horribly". Not really. The match was actually a very entertaining one, and Safina didn't play that bad. It was just Danka who hit deeper and more accurately throughout the entire match. She played smartly from a tactical POV (the local ES commentator remarked how good her court positioning and anticipation were today), and rarely made the wrong choice as to shot selection and placement.

I must admit that, even though I'm a fan of Safina, after a while I was just in awe and even rooting a bit for Danka; when she's hitting as cleanly as this, she's simply a delight to watch, and it would be terribly unfair if she choked the match away as she has done so often in the past.

And bringing up again a discussion I was having at another thread, I'm closer now to believing Safina's successes indoors in previous seasons are more due to chance (as in, she happened to find herself at her best in indoors tournaments) than to any specific skills she has that suits such venues. She hits hard, but not particularly deep nor flat. I still fail to see what's so spectacular about Safina's first serve; it's good, wins a few free points here and there, but it's not the lethal weapon some claim. And her second serve is useless. Also, it's just plain odd how often such a big, powerful player is forced on to the defensive (at which she is decent at best due to her hulking frame).

And BTW that shot at 3-1 first set, with Dinara down 15-40, was kilometers out.
