I agree with you, especially because shes unlikely to end this year number 1 as shes likely gonna have to pull out of YEC

Kuznetsova.

Oct 5th, 2006, 07:21 AM
Amelie of course

The 2 belgians will get injured all year, the Williams will disappear, and Sharapova will failed to get a new USOpen crown (lost in 1st rd to a qualifier).
With Kuzzy in second position.

I'll be biased and say Maria. I think she has a good chance to get to number one again next year.

I HOPE Serena...she has (up to) 5 tournaments to defend and 2 of them are majors. So if she plays an injury-free season, with her typical results, she should get to #1

 Will never happen. She may have a slam victory but number 1??? Won't even happen.

I think if Maria stays healthy she has a great chance, same can be said for Justine and if Serena is commited and healthy she will be in the mix.

You have to add Sveta to that list of players. She has a big chance of becoming No1.
So I pick SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA. (with Juju and Mauresmo the other strong candidates)

Hingis ;)

She rank #8 (so far, could be better) this year from her comeback (no ranking)

She could reach #1 as well ;) go Hingis!

Yea, I agree then
Although Jones has been playing loads of Junior events this year - her goal was to be ranked in the top 15 in Juniors by the end of the year (which she has achieved  )

Since mid 2003, Serena has not really been a factor even though she appeared in two slam finals, winning one. Other than those two, her best efforts have been quarters or fourth rounds. There is no indication she can get back into 2003 condition.

So the real contest is between JHH, Pova and Kuzy. I think these three will meet a lot late in tournament in 2007. I do not think JHH can physically stand up to a year of pounding from Pova and Kuzy even though she may start the year winning some matches.

Pova will edge Kuzy by year's end and be the Y.E. #1. She may also start the year as #1!!! Lets see how Moscow goes next week.

Well Sveta met Justine 5 times this year and didn't even take a set from her. And the H2H is 12-1 in Justine's favor. To Justine, I think Maria is more of a challenge. Well the H2H is a least better at 4-2 and the last win was of course Maria's. The difference really is that Maria can go head to head against Justine when it comes to mental toughness and incredible fight and in their matches, like in the US Open, Justine's mental strength at times is overshadowed by Maria's.

If Justine is healthy, she's still the player to beat. But if the US Open was a breakthrough for Maria the way I think it was, Justine will have to watch out. :) And of course there's Mauresmo but she has a lot to defend next year. We'll see.

Probably Sharapova. I think injuries are likely to prevent Justine from reaching the top spot. Serena even if she does return to form probably won't play enough to get the number 1 ranking. I think Mauresmo had her dream season this year and won't play quite as well next year. So that leaves Sharapova. Maybe Kuznetsova if she can become more consistent.

i think justine will end as the no.1 ranked player in 2007. she's had such a great season this year & there's no doubt in my mind that she is gonna have another great season next year as well (alas keeping the injuries at bay).

i hope that kim though finishes no.1 in the world in 2007 & wins another grand slam. fingers crossed. don't overate her.

others i would consider 4 year end no.1 in 2007:
Maria
Sveta
Amelie
Williams Sisters
maybe elena d

Amelie of course

The 2 belgians will get injured all year, the Williams will disappear, and Sharapova will failed to get a new USOpen crown (lost in 1st rd to a qualifier).
With Kuzzy in second position.

I find it so hilarious that you have been completely wrong, despite Kuzzy currently being second (never would have predicted that) and that Sharapova did not defend her crown (although she didn't lose to a qualifier). And no, the Williams sisters have not disappeared. They have returned with Slams to their names.

The strange thing is that I thought the exact same thing this time last year in regards to the Williams sisters. Just shows that you can never write them off no matter what circumstance.

thrust
Sep 10th, 2007, 03:30 PM
Justine, noone else has a reasonable chance. She probably could end her season now and still be #1 after the YEC, as they are about the only points she has to defend for the rest of the year.

When Henin didn't play the AO and thinking about Maria's form of the US Open, I really thought it woulbe easily Maria.
Unbelieveable what Henin did this year. Missing 1 slam and still WAY ahead of all others.

2 players on the POLL already retired; and only 4 out of the ten players are current Top 10 players.
