Third seed Elena Dementieva, who collapsed while serving for the match, recovered to defeat Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik 4-6 7-5 7-5 in the second round of the Stuttgart Grand Prix on Wednesday.

Having broken to lead 5-4 in the deciding set, the Russian fell to the floor due to an injury to her left leg.

After several minutes of treatment and a sympathetic hand on the shoulder from her opponent, Dementieva carried on playing and had her serve broken.

But she dug deep to pound a succession of powerful groundstrokes to break serve again before completing one of the most difficult wins of her career.

The three-hour victory was Dementieva's sixth win in six matches against Srebotnik.

The unseeded Daniela Hantuchova also struggled to overcome Austrian left-hander Sybille Bammer, winning their first-round match 6-3 5-7 6-3 to earn a meeting with Russian Dinara Safina.

No injury, just a cramp. But Elena proved what a fighter she is anyway.

I want a youtube upload !

And yes, Katarina went to Elena's side of the court and put her hand on Elena's shoulder. Such a nice gesture.

Kat has always had a lot of class too, and its unlucky for her to be losing these three set matches, the one against Davenport and now here, but she is a really good player when she is on, and she proved that.

Excuse me? You speak for everyone, do you?

Maria gave Tati her condolences after she retired and while leaving the stadium.
Show me where the opposing player ALWAYS or even usually sticks her nose in while the other player is injured and being attended to by a trainer; then you can say something about Maria. She acted no differently then 90% of tennis players who did not even witness their opponents injuring themselves would do; she kept herself mentally and physically focused in a tough match and then commiserated with her opponent afterwards.

Kata :hearts:. She's really one of the kindest players on tour. She impresses me more each day, and hopefully she can start closing out these tough matches soon.

I think it's better to withdraw in this situation, instead of risking making it worse
But Lena is a fighter
