i personally think that sharapova should be number 1 at the moment but not because im her fan. i mean if you look at it she beat all the players in the top 3 this summer that many thought she couldnt beat ie kim justine and mauresmo and she gave amelie 2 bagels at that. i mean mauresmo is the #1 at the moment but shes being ahnded out bagels galore surely this means that shes not deserving of the number 1 spoy. although she has a had a great breakthrough year and im very happy for her.

Best for us to wait till the end of the year and see who is number 1. Whoever ends the year at number 1 deserves to be there.

true....it's pretty exciting that it hasn't been decided and that 3 players are still in contention for the number one spot.

The thread starter apparently isn't aware of it, but some years ago, an objective point system was implemented to determine rankings. You can read all about it on wtatour.com; you'll undoubtedly find it enlightening It puts an end to any need for speculation.

I'm surprised when I see threads suggesting that a fan is oblivious to the existence of the ranking system, but I shouldn't be. There are actually fans who, (you won't believe this), don't realize that Anastasia Myskina is the most talented, beautiful and captivating player ever to pick up a racket. It just goes to show that some people really don't see the proverbial 900 lb. gorilla in the room.

Justine, she have been in all grand slam finals this year. She deserves to be #1 at this moment. But rankings never lies

i mean whoever's currently no.1 which is mauresmo, at the moment obviously deserves 2 be there i reckon. u don't become no.1 4 no reason. henin-hardenne also deserves 2 be no.1 as well 2 but that's just how the rankings work. put it this way, both of them deserve no.1.

Mauresmo. She won 2 slams this year. And she is number 1 in the rankings. End of story.

exactly what i was thinking! doesnt anyone know that she won a $10k in february?! who else of the options has done that? sharapova? kuznetsova? i dont think so....

by the way - momo. she has obviously done enough to get there and won 2 slams - more than anyone else this year. i dont see what all this is about. so she gets a few bagels. so do most players (except keothavong of course ;))

I voted for Maria, partially because I am a huge fan, and partially because she absolutely pwned the US Open.

There's a good argument for Mauresmo, obviously. I mean, two slams. Come on.

However, I think Maria will end the year as #1. She's playing two big tournaments, then has the YEC. If she wins the YEC, she will be #1, essentially.
