Squandered a gazillion of GPs to make it 5-2...

But she is playing every week on the green clay in America from now on and getting into the tournaments as the Top seed, she should bag the direct acceptance for RG easily.

Edina is cruising right along quietly in this tournament. She defeated Sharon, 62 75. In the quarters, she took out #6 Misaki Doi, 60 63. Now faces Julie Cohen in the semis. Edina has a 2:0 h2h over her.

Yes, she is secured to get a MD spot at the French Open, but there she has to defend 100 points, so she has to do some work to guarantee a spot for Wimbledon as well in order to make the cut-off.

WD Edina . I was there :D

My report:
I watched the first set. Edina played very well. She was so consistent and she was playing really well. There were an lot of nice rallies and good points from both. It was a fun match :D. Edina was calm and patient but aggressive. She had a lot of winners. Valentyna played well and fought hard but Edina was more experienced and more consistent. Valentyna kept banging her racket and swearing in Ukrainian but she tried to run down every ball and worked hard for her points. It was a good match but Edina was just a little better and played well on the important points. I left this match after the first set because Valentyna took a bathroom break and I didn't feel like waiting for her to come back, and on my way out I saw that Asderaki was watching this match

Edina had a better year in 2012 than 2011, but she's ended both outside of the Top 100, where she'd been the previous four years, so there is definitely room to keep improving.
2012 109
2011 124

Robson v Hall
Zheng v Niculescu
Espinosa v Chang
Q v Jankovic

Edina has a tough draw, but Laura Robson is not impossible, as Edina has a 1:0 record against her. However, that was two years ago, and on clay. Still, she will go into the match knowing that she has beaten her.

Edina has nothing to lose-- she has no points to defend in January, so she can start her move back into the Top 100.

Happy retirement!

The source seems reliable and frankly the news is not that unexpected. I mean coming back after such a long injury break at this age seems almost impossible.

Anyway, good luck to Edina in her coaching career as well as in her personal life!

She's done great on court winning 18 ITF titles and reaching the final in Barcelona back in 2007 and reaching other 5 WTA semifinals between 2009 and 2012. Great wins over the years over respected players such as Medina Garrigues, Bammer, Kirilenko, Errani, Bacsinszky, Govortsova, Pennetta, Jankovic, Pironkova, Kanepi, Vinci, Zakopalova, Zheng, Rezai, Razzano, Dominguez Lino, to name only a few. Personally my only regret about her great career is that final match of hers, where Serena won with a double 60 in the first round of the Australian Open 2013.

W/L: 414/253 (as a Professional player, including qualifying matches)
Ratio: .621 (Not bad at all)

All the best, Edina! Love :)

Great message. I would add : with Career High Singles Ranking of 54 (28/04/2008) and a Career High *Doubles Ranking of 63 (06/04/2009) , *winning 3 WTA titles + 1 more final , finishing the competitional year 4 consecutive times in Top 100 in Singles (2007-2010) and 3 times in Doubles (2008-2010) , also representing Romania in Fed Cup '01 and '03, before moving in the USA.

Anyway, I don't know if the source is reliable or not (someone should ask her on Twitter of fB) but her SR ranking would be 109 , not 170 , that would most likely grant her a *retirement (*if it's true) match in the MD , at Roland Garros or at the US Open . :)

All the best to her, no matter if this is "the end" or not ;)

Edina is currently ALT #4 in Washington (Main Draw only). When she had to drop one of her tournaments for next week she logically withdrew from Stanford thinking it would be easier to get into Washington MD. Now she would have been ALT #2 in Stanford :(

spiceboy
Jul 25th, 2014, 02:16 PM
BTW it would be foolish for her to use her SR at the USO. Her #109 SR would take her directly into MD (99% sure) in any other GS getting a fat big check in the process. Using it here just to enter the Q is just a big NO. Hope she he is smart and keeps it for Melbourne or Paris.

Exactly, but as it's USA ,where she lives and has people to support her , well, it's up to her.

Hope she somehow gets in ,in Washington. :)

EDIT : Must be really frustrating to be 1st ALT under the line after 18 months of no WTA match.

Of course. She has 8. If not , she'll probably try for RG or for Wimbledon. 100% she'll make the MD in one of those 3 .

In the meantime, she got a MDWC in $10k ITF Amelia Island :D . First official tournament after 20 months. Good luck !

She will enter the rankings (a finalist here is awarded 7 points), but the most important thing is that the reason of her retirement isn't another injury. I hope she is ok.

Unfortunately, NO :

(WTA Rules) Players must earn (i) ranking points in at least three (3) valid
Tournaments, or (ii) a minimum of 10 singles ranking points or 10
doubles ranking points in one (1) or more valid Tournaments, in
order to appear on the WTA Rankings.

You're right. I always forget how stupid the WTA Rules regarding Rankings are: you can win 1 point in 3 different tournaments and you're good enough to have a ranking, but when you win 7 points by reaching a final, you don't deserve to be ranked
