View Full Version : USO 3R: Mary Pierce (13) v. Na Li (24)

guys the match I dreaded has come true !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

while I was kicking myself and wanting to kill USO organizers when the draw came out, I am now looking forward to this match between our Mary (my fave) and my 2nd, newer fave Na Li

Mary is the player that got me hooked on tennis. but being Chinese, I always wanted to see a Chinese player do well. Of course, I loved Na as soon as she started playing on tour in 2004 as she has a style that is a little similar to Mary (go for broke winners!)

so I am really looking forward to this match. I believe it will take place on Sunday because Saturdaly looks like a complete washout. I will go there in person to witness the match!!!!

and to let you guys in on a secret, I will be rooting for Mary to win in a high quality, hard fought match

DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!

We all did this in the Aussie, remember? Looking past Benesova to Hingis, and Iveta sent our girl home.

Did you see what Na Li did at Wimbledon? This is not a woman to be taken lightly. She is the first Chinese player EVER to break the top 20, and she handed Vaidisova's and Kuznetsova's asses to them on a platter.
Best to forget Sharapova even exists, and like Mary says, take it one at a time... Na Li will give our girl enough of a fight.

Go, Mary Caroline, go!

I hate this rain too. :( I was so excited about the possibility of seeing Mary....but alas I come away disappointed. I Spent the whole day at the tennis center until they officially called off the session. Didn't get to see Mary. I did get to see Groenefeld and Razzano hitting a few balls on a outside court. I have some pics if anyone wants to see.

I tried to exchange my tickets for tomorrow but by the time it was my turn they were sold out for tomorrow. Tomorrow is going to be a great day of tennis...I wish I was going to be there :(

I ended up getting tickets for tuesday hopefully Mary will be playing then...

What a bad schedule !

Court 11 for last year finalist, what a shame !

But only 3 matches on Center Court, if Andre beat Becker easily and Roddick makes the same, the organisation could put another match on center court ... :tape:

And 3 matches on Armstrong during Day Cession with Night Cession beginning at 7:30 ...

Fiou, so stupid ! :tape:

It's really out of necessity. There are some players who have only played ONE match. For example David Nalbandian has only played his first round match. The Men's draw hasn't event completed the second round. Also the reason there is a night session on Armstrong is to appease the fans that were exchanging tickets. After yesterday's rain out there weren't many things people could exchange tickets for during this US Open. Therefore they created another session so people could see a marquis player in action.

Its regrettable that Mary is on court 11 but you know it an opportunity for fans of hers that only have general admission to see her up close. I'm kicking myself for not being able to be there. :(

lovely . . . write her off after she's only played her 6th match back after a 5 month layoff, she's not a teenager anymore, it's gonna take time for her to get her full game and speed back, so give her a break, it's not like it's the end of the world, there's still more tournaments to come.

she needs David back, that's all.

Right -- just so we know, where else are you planning to post this? I'm going to venture a guess and say you probably haven't been following Mary's career for a very long time, have you? Well let me just tell you, her career certainly didn't start in 2005 and we have no particular reason to think it just ended. So she loses one match? BIG DEAL! It certainly doesn't mean she won't recover, she's done it before and she can do it again. Her true fans know not to react that way after one match in an injury-ridden season.

hey guys, it is sad
today mary is not aggressive enough i guess.
I have watched the end of the 1st set, even she won the 1st set, i was sure she is going to lose as she is so passive and hit the ball not as hard as Li Na.
She just keep the ball on court and hoped Li to make unforced error.
Then i went to school, and when i onlined in the library...what an upset for me...
it is really disappointed she lost the 12 consecutive games...

Anyway, it is not a bad thing, at least this encourages Mary to keep practising to make her aggressive tennis back.

Mary, looking forward to your next match. Please cheer up for mary and you guys!!!

Hi All,
I cant really believe what i am reading here?!?!?!
We ALL know what can happen if Mary is not in the Zone...
And, unfortunaltely she mustnt have been in the zone the last two sets.
She was so gracious in defeat the way smiled and congratulated Li on her win...
Mary WILL be back, she is no quitter... She had to lose some day, and yesterday was the day.
Let's all be positive and give Mary the encouragement she most richly deserves.

I was so excited when I heard she took the 1st set, and the commentator than said "another french is in trouble, mary pierce has lost 10 successive games". i was shocked. I was really looking forward to seeing her finally and Im so sad. Lets hope this is just a bad day and not an injury. Seems like AO this year where she was struggling?

Hi all,

I have not been a Mary Pierce fan for long, but I have become a huge fan. I saw her on TV during (I believe), the French Open final against Justine in 2005 and then again the US Open final against Kim. I loved the way she fought and how gracious she was when she lost. I followed her injury recovery here on wtaworld and was disappointed like you all were when she missed the French Open and Wimbledon this year. I was so happy to see her compete in the US Open.
The older we get the easier it is to get out of shape and the harder it is to get back into fight shape. I think it will take Mary some time and this is just the beginning. Don't give up on Mary. I certainly am not.
I am a 53-year-old and took up running four years ago. I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2004 and 2005, but I am out of shape this year. I began graduate school in January and I just haven't had the time to train properly. I did have August off of school and trained for a 10 mile race which I ran in this morning. My per mile pace was still off about a minute. (I finished with a time of 1:26.) I think it would take me a good 15 weeks to get back into shape. What I am saying is, support and encourage Mary as she continues to train and I am sure she will get back to her "fighting" shape. We need to not be disappointed but be encouraged that Mary did as well as she did the first two rounds.
GREAT JOB MARY!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. We will continue to be here for you.

I totally agree. Mary understands where her game is and what she needs to do to get back in top shape. She'll go home (not too sure if that is Paris or Florida), train hard, work, work ,work, play some matches, and eventually things will fall in place. She's motivated enough, she's a hard worker, and she's not ready to quit, so providing she stays healthy, I would not be surprised to see her as a real contender for the Aus Open 2007 title. Allez Mary! :)

I have gotten over this loss too -well, the whole season if I'm being really honest. It promised so much: a realistic chance of getting to No.1, a third Slam win, but disintegrated into nothing because of yet more injuries. So I expected nothing from the US Open, and really, Mary did quite well given her enforced lengthy lay-off. Anything she achieves this autumn will be a bonus, but I too am really looking to a full, healthy and successful 2007 for Mary.

to be honest i didnt expect mary to go that deep this tournament and I am actually v. pleased with her performance, even though i was initially disappointed after her 3R loss. Now I really cant wait until the European indoor season, and especially AO 07!!!! Next year Mary will be back in prime form as she will have the whole off-season to be fit!

Right on, Scott...
I went back into the ring at age 33 (40 now) and discovered that getting the tune back at that age was nothing like the couple of weeks it took when I was a young, fit, disciplined, resolute trooper in the 7th ID (Light). The bod takes a while at that age, and Mary is closer now to 32 than 31.
This is not the end of Mary Pierce--not with her heart and her drive. She's been down before, in equally bad situations (this isn't so bad, really, she went three rounds--better than Myskina and others)--she has come back fine.
The woman you see out on the court is a cool, quiet, player that has it all put together, and inside there beats a heart that flares with a controlled inferno when she is firing on all cylinders.
I have no doubt we will see that woman again.

Faith.

Mary is not gone.

Go, Mary Caroline, go!

I can't believe she served 10 aces to 1 double, 40 winners to 10 unforced errrors. I also watched to 5-0 against Henin and that amazing point where she chased Henins lob and hit it for a winner.
