------------------------
Nicole Vaidišová preview
------------------------

Hard courts are Nicole's best surface, and she says that the US Open is her favourite Grand Slam because "I like the buzz."

Nicole has a very easy draw for the first two rounds, followed by a tough third-round match with Jelena Jankovic, and then a rematch with her nemesis Svetlana Kuznetsova.

1r: A few years ago, Chanda Rubin would have been a very dangerous first-round opponent. She came within two points of beating Monica Seles in the semi-finals of the Australian Open 1996, and the experts were tipping her as a future Grand Slam champion.

But the 30-year-old has been restricted by injuries to her left knee and ankle in the last two years, playing only three tournaments in 2005 (winning one match) and only one tournament in 2006 (lost 6-2 6-3 to Jill Craybas in 1r Stanford).

So provided that Nicole's shoulder-injury is nothing serious, all she has to do is show up, and her first-ever match against Rubin should be little more than a practice-session.

2r: I hope it will be the gorgeous Alina Jidkova, who has been restricted by a serious right-knee injury this year: she only started in July, with three ITF tournaments followed by a loss in the first round of qualifying for Montréal.

Jessica Kirkland is another American wild card, who plays mostly on the ITF circuit and trying to qualify for WTA tournaments.

Either way, it's a very easy draw for Nicole.

3r: Jelena Jankovic looked dead and buried earlier this year, as she lost ten matches in a row between January and May! She was concentrating on her studies to the detriment of her tennis, and was contemplating retirement.

But Jankovic found her form again in May, knocked defending champion Venus Williams out of Wimbledon, and upset Ana Ivanovic and Serena Williams back to back to reach the final of Los Angeles.

But Jankovic pulled out of Montréal and New Haven with a right-shoulder injury.

Nicole has beaten Jankovic all three times they've met, without dropping a set, but Jankovic on recent form is not to be taken lightly!

If Jankovic's shoulder has not recovered, then the likely opponent here would be Kirsten Flipkens, who has a 30-15 win/loss record for 2006, albeit from the ITF circuit (she was runner-up at Petange last month) and WTA qualifying. And she's cute! ;)

Or it could even be Chan,Yung-Jan, Nicole's fellow 17-year-old who has won three ITF titles this year.

I would prefer Nicole's third-round opponent to be the adorable Gisela Dulko, but Gisela has lost five of her last six matches, all by terrible scorelines. :(

4r: Nicole would likely be facing her nemesis Svetlana Kuznetsova again. It's Martina Hingis's fault, because she displaced Nicole in the rankings just in time to push her out of the top 8 seedings.

Nicole lost 7-5 6-7 6-2 to Kuznetsova in 3r Wimbledon 2005, then 5-7 7-6 6-2 in the semi-finals of this year's French Open. Nicole choked on a 7-5 5-3* lead, ran out of gas in the third set, and left the court in tears.

Kuznetsova won the US Open 2004, and has enjoyed a return to form this year, winning Miami over Maria Sharapova, and of course reaching that French Open final that should have been Nicole's. Her form in the US Open Series has been pretty strong, with a win over Elena Dementieva and losses to Martina Hingis and Justine Henin-Hardenne.

I hope Nicole does face Kuznetsova in the fourth round, as there are no nice players in that 16th of the draw, and I would like nothing better than for Nicole to face this demon head-on and overcome her!

qf: The seedings say that Elena Dementieva should reach this round. Dementieva is having a highly successful 2006, with a 40-15 win/loss record, recently winning Los Angeles with a win over an exhausted Maria Sharapova in the semis.

Dementieva has a very weak serve, so logically Nicole should be able to beat her easily, as Nicole has arguably the best serve in women's tennis, while Dementieva has to rely on being a prolific breaker of serve.

But Dementieva won their only meeting 3-6 6-1 6-2, in the quarter-finals of Tokyo. Dementieva went on to win the title, thrashing Martina Hingis 6-2 6-0 in the final.

I hope it will be Vera Zvonarëva instead. Vera has enjoyed a spectacular return to form in the last couple of months, winning Birmingham and Cincinnati, and the Mixed Doubles at Wimbledon. But she withdrew from Los Angeles and Montréal with a left-wrist injury. Vera beat Nicole 6-3 6-2 the only time they played (Eastbourne 2005).

sf: It's difficult to look beyond the new world #2, Justine Henin-Hardenne, who has reached the final of every Grand Slam so far this year, and has beaten Nicole in straight sets in both their previous meetings.

Henin hadn't played since Wimbledon due to a right-knee injury, but she has just stormed to the New Haven title for the loss of 17 games, beating Svetlana Kuznetsova and an injured Lindsay Davenport back to back.

My dream semi-final opponent for Nicole, given this draw, would be the winner of the first-round match between Karolina Šprem and Sania Mirza.

First round (Monday 28th August)
-----------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [9] d. Chanda Rubin [WC], 6-4 6-3

Matt Cronin: "The Czech teen is a tremendous ball striker with a big serve and vicious returner who as all the makings of a top five player, if she can keep her temper in check, add some more variety and develop better foot speed. But even without these elements, she's top 10 player and semifinal threat here."

Pharrell: "I saw the match on the french television and Nicole played not very well.I tought that she was not taking this match very seriously. She has to improve her footstep, her volley and more if she want to go far.At the end,she was blowing like she wants to say 'If was not so easy that I think'.She have to be more consistent. But,it's only the first round, she will improve her game, for sure."

I followed live scores at www.usopen.org (http://www.usopen.org/). The match started on Armstrong Court at 19:24 EDT. Here are my comments as I wrote them at the time:

First Set:
VAIDI * *@*___*@ 6
RUBIN _*___*@*__ 4

Nicole serving 0-0: held to love.

That's the start I'd expect to see! :)

Rubin serving 0-1: 30/15, 30/30, 40/40, ad Rubin, held.
Nicole serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, held.

It's a bit scrappy at the moment, but it can only be a matter of time before Nicole imposes her superior abilities on rusty old Rubin - I can call her that because I'm equally old and rusty too! ;)

Rubin serving 1-2: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad Nicole (BP #2), broken.

Nicole pulls clear, and we'll see if the old cliché, "the result was never in doubt after that," will apply to this match.

Nicole serving 3-1: 0/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad Nicole, Deuce #2, ad Nicole, held.

Well recovered, though I'm a bit perturbed that she made such a meal of it from 40/30 up. Return-of-serve was one of Rubin's strengths in the days when she was a genuine title-contender.

Rubin serving 1-4: held to love.

I sense the momentum gradually shifting over to Rubin, even though Nicole is ahead in terms of the score. Nicole began the match holding easily while Rubin struggled on serve; now it's the other way round. It feels more important for Nicole to hold every service-game now.

Nicole serving 4-2: 0/15, 15/15, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.

And I was right! :( Sometimes small problems magnify into major ones. Years of following live scores have given me a sixth sense for such things.

Rubin serving 3-4: held to love.

Nicole now has a real battle on her beautiful hands. I wonder if her shoulder is hurting, or is this just a bad day at the office?

Nicole serving 4-4: held to love.

A break here would be very welcome to put this awkward set to bed.

Rubin serving 4-5: 15/30, 15/40 (2 SPs) -> 40/40, ad Nicole (SP #3), Deuce #2, Nicole won the first set 6-4 at 20:04 (40m).

Second Set:
VAIDI *@* * * * 6
RUBIN ___* * *_ 3

Nicole serving 0-0: 40/0, 40/15, held.
Rubin serving 0-1: 0/15... 30/40 (BP), broken.
Nicole serving 2-0: 15/0, 15/15... held.

I'm delighted to see that this match is following a similar pattern to Vera Zvonarëva's win over Marta Domachowska earlier today. Vera won an awkward first set, then raced to a 4-0 lead in the second...

Rubin serving 0-3: 15/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 3-1: 15/15, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad Nicole, held.

Sometimes it's good to face a break-point before holding serve. It puts a missed opportunity into the mind of your opponent, and it may also help to prepare Nicole for the much tougher opponents ahead, when it's so important to fight for every game.

Rubin serving 1-4: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 4-2: held to love.
Rubin serving to stay in the match at 2-5: 40/0 (3 MPs), Nicole won 6-4 6-3 at 20:30 (1h06m).

And a nice, smooth finish - I must admit it caught me a bit by surprise when "6-4 6-3" suddenly flashed up on the scoreboard while I was reflecting on all the close games in this match!

Statistics
----------

Nicole got 66% of first serves in, winning 73% of the points when she did so, and 74% on second serve! (Rubin 67%, 68% and 50%). All these percentages improved significantly for both players from the first set to the second.

Nicole served much faster than Rubin: fastest 111mph, average first serve 101mph, second serve 88mph (Rubin 103mph, 89mph, 81mph). These are consistent with the speeds Nicole was serving at Wimbledon, so I guess her shoulder was okay.

Nicole served 10 aces and 1 double fault, while Rubin served none of either.

Nicole had a positive W:UE ratio of 34:27 (first set 16:17, second 18:10), while Rubin's was a much-less-spectacular 10:17.

Nicole broke 3 times from 8 break-points, Rubin once from 2 BPs. This doesn't seem like a very good conversion-rate for Nicole, but I do believe she won all the games in which she had break-points (I am unable to account for all the BPs due to frozen-scoreboard misery).

In fact they only had one break-point each in the second set: Nicole converted hers, Rubin didn't.

Rubin won 10 of 15 points at the net, while Nicole was more selective and successful, winning 6 of 8.

In points, Nicole won 62-49 (first set 34-30, second 28-19).

Vaidišová v Jidkova
-------------------

I'm very pleased that the gorgeous Alina Jidkova beat American wild card Jessica Kirkland 3-6 6-2 6-4 to become Nicole's second-round opponent.

Alina has been restricted by a serious right-knee injury this year: she only started in July, with three ITF tournaments followed by a loss in the first round of qualifying for Montréal. So it should be an easy match for Nicole.

Second round (Thursday 31st August)
------------

Nice winner, nice loser:
+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [9] d. Alina Jidkova, 6-2 3-6 6-3

I followed live scores at www.usopen.org (http://www.usopen.org/). The match started on Court 4 at 11:14 EDT. Here are my comments as I wrote them at the time:

First Set:
VAIDIŠO _*@* *@* 6
JIDKOVA *___*___ 2

Alina serving 0-0: 0/30 -> 30/30, held.

Nicole let Alina off the hook there, but I suppose I should be glad, as I don't really want sweet Alina to be double-bagelled! ;)

Nicole serving 0-1: 30/0, held.
Alina serving 1-1: 0/30, broken.
Nicole serving 2-1: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad Nicole, Deuce #2, ad Nicole, held.

And again, Nicole lets Alina recover from a two-point deficit - this time on her own serve, but gets away with it.

Alina serving 1-3: 15/0, 30/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 3-2: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, held.
Alina serving 2-4: 0/30 -> 40/30, 40/40, ad Nicole (BP), broken.

Almost let Alina off the hook again!

Nicole serving for the first set at 5-2: 30/0, Nicole won the first set 6-2 at 11:39 (25m).

Second Set:
VAIDIŠO __@*___*_ 3
JIDKOVA *@__*@* * 6

Alina serving 0-0: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 0-1: 30/0 -> 30/40 (BP), broken.

Unbelievable that this should happen after 30/0! Perhaps Nicole is getting a bit complacent after winning the first set easily?

Alina serving 2-0: 0/30, broken.

Great champions break back immediately.

Nicole serving 1-2: 30/15, 40/15, held.
Alina serving 2-2: 30/0, 40/15, held.

An important hold for Alina, as I thought Nicole was going to roll right over her. I've never really felt that Nicole was in danger of losing this match, but she's got a bit of scoreboard-pressure on her now.

Nicole serving 2-3: 15/15, broken.

Well, she's certainly in danger of losing this set if she doesn't get her act together! Suddenly this match has a very different complexion than at 2-2, and there's no worse feeling in tennis than when what seemed like an easy victory suddenly becomes a desperate struggle for survival - maybe not yet, but if this was the third set...

Alina serving 4-2: 30/0 -> 30/30, held.
Nicole serving to stay in the second set at 2-5: 30/0, 40/15, held.
Alina serving for the second set at 5-3: 40/0 (3 SPs), 40/30, Alina won the second set 6-3 at 12:10 (31m).

I never expected this before the match began, or immediately after the first set! There has to be more to it than Nicole just getting complacent, and I hope it's not injury.

I'm trembling with fear right now - I never expected Nicole to be in danger of losing before the third round (and her chances against Jelena Jankovic don't look great right now - Jankovic completed a 6-2 6-3 win over Kirsten Flipkens a few minutes ago, and awaits the winner of this match).

Third Set:
VAIDIŠO _@*@* * * 6
JIDKOVA @____* *_ 3

Nicole serving 0-0: 0/15, 15/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.

Something has to be very wrong with Nicole now - I'm guessing that her right-shoulder injury has flared up again, and is affecting her serve. I can't believe that nerves are the root-cause of such a dramatic collapse from 6-2 2-2 against an opponent with Alina's recent results.

Alina serving 0-1: 0/15, 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.
Nicole serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/30, 30/30, 40/40, ad Nicole (BP), held.

A gutsy couple of games for Nicole, and it's going to take a lot of guts for Nicole to come through this third set after her dramatic loss of control, if injury is indeed the reason.

Alina serving 1-2: 0/15, 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), 30/40, broken.
Nicole serving 3-1: held to love.

The tide seems to have turned in Nicole's favour, with four games in a row. But for Alina it's still well worth fighting - it's only one break, after all.

Alina serving 1-4: 15/0, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad Alina, held.
Nicole serving 4-2: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15, held.

Now it's like the end of the second set in reverse.

Alina serving to stay in the match at 2-5: 0/30 -> 30/30, 40/40, ad Alina, Deuce #2, ad Nicole (MP), Deuce #3, ad Alina, Deuce #4, ad Nicole (MP #2), Deuce #5, ad Alina, Deuce #6, ad Alina, held.

Alina seems to win all the games where one player has been pegged back from a two-point deficit. :(

Nicole serving for the match at 5-3: 15/0, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30 (MP #
3), Nicole won 6-2 3-6 6-3 at 12:52 (third set 42m, match 1h38m).

Disaster averted! :)

(www.usopen.org (http://www.usopen.org/) does not have statistics for this match at the time of writing.)

Vaidišová v Jankovic
--------------------

Jelena Jankovic looked dead and buried earlier this year, as she lost ten matches in a row between January and May!

After Nicole struggled through what should have been an easy match against Alina Jidkova, while Jankovic has reached the third round with the following results...
1r + Gisela Dulko, 6-7 6-1 6-4
2r + Kirsten Flipkens, 6-2 6-3
...I would have to say that Jankovic is the form-favourite going into this match.

An interview with: NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Could you describe the match in terms of the scores were very different in each set. What happened with the back and forth?
NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ: You know, in general was not a great match from my point of view today, you know. Just struggling a little bit. But, you know, got through it, and that's important. So just get ready for my next match.

Q. There was a little bit of commotion when you were playing over on the practice court. Agassi was practising. Did you notice any of that with fans running up?
NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ: I didn't know he was practising. I try to play my match, you know, not really...

Q. Can I go to a non-match thing. I just want to get a sense from you, now that you've emerged in the upper echelon, talk about a few of the other players and who has... which players stand out as really the next hurdle? I mean, who are the players that you look to and say, "This is who I am going to have to beat now that I realistically can win a tournament like this?"
NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ: Well, anybody I'm facing next. That's important for me.

Q. But of the world at large out there. As the tournament begins, as your career goes onward, you say, "Okay, this is the upper echelon out there. This is who I have to get past or join if I'm going to be one of the best players in the world."
NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ: Well, I'm No. 10 in the world so, you know, nine more players are in front of me I'm gonna have to be beating, you know.
So, you know, I don't think there's one special player I'm thinking, "Okay, I have to beat her now to be in the top, or her." You just have to win matches. If you want to be top 5, top 3, you have to be beating all those players, so there's not one particular player.

Q. Do you feel like players like you and Ivanovic are going to be the next sensation on the circuit?
NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ: I'm just trying to play my tennis, enjoy, you know, do my best. You know, I think it's great that there are new players coming up, you know, new faces, new names, new stories. I think it's very good for the tour. Hopefully, we'll get up there.

Third round (Friday 1st September)
-----------

- NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [9] lt. JELENA JANKOVIC [19], 7-5 3-6 2-6

Nicole won the first set from 1-5 down! But she capitulated in the third, presumably because her three-set match of the day before had tired her out.

Clair Maciel for www.usopen.org (http://www.usopen.org/):
>>>
The upset wasn't necessarily due to the fact that Jankovic did anything special to break apart Vaidišová's game, but it was more due to the fact that Vaidišová seemed to lose her mental edge and became frustrated with herself.

It appeared that it just wasn't Vaidišová's day, as she began committing a number of unforced errors, double faulting and sending a string of shots long and wide. By the end of the match, she gave up a staggering 38 unforced errors, compared to Jankovic's 13.

However, the contest between Jankovic and Vaidišová was not at all disappointing or uneventful. Both were serving well, Jankovic at 73 percent in first serves and Vaidišová at 65 percent. Throughout the match the two played out a number of long rallies, taking turns firing accurate passing shots and exhibiting a spectacular show of heavy, textbook groundstrokes. Jankovic dominated with her strong backhand, hitting 11 winners from that side, and Vaidišová struck 15 winners off her power forehand.

Once Jankovic tucked away the second set, she rolled through the final frame, breaking Vaidišová three straight times before Vaidišová dumped a backhand return in the net on match point.
<<<

Polo Ralph Lauren for www.usopen.org (http://www.usopen.org/):
>>>
Turning point: Finding her way back into the match, Jankovic earned double-break point at 3-2 in the second, but a Vaidišová ace and a backhand unforced error into the net erased both. Frustrated, Vaidišová ruined her good work, gifting Jankovic with a break in the following game anyway, striking a pair of lazy unforced errors.

The trendy sleeper pick to win her first Grand Slam title was sent packing and really only has herself to blame for the poor loss. Up a set against a player that she had dominated, Vaidišová's worst enemy was herself, sulking and mumbling throughout the match.

I followed live scores at www.usopen.org (http://www.usopen.org/). The match started on Court 11 at 11:13 EDT. Here are my comments as I wrote them at the time:

First Set:
VAIDIŠOV _*____@*@*@* 7
JANKOVIC * *@*@______ 5

Jankovic serving 0-0: 0/15, held to 15.
Nicole serving 0-1: 40/0, held.

I get the feeling that the start isn't crucial - it could be some time before one player takes a decisive lead in this match.

Jankovic serving 1-1: 0/15, 15/15, 40/30, held.
Nicole serving 1-2: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Jankovic serving 3-1: 15/0, 30/15, 40/15, held.

A bad start for Nicole, as I feared after her second-round struggle. But it won't be easy for Jankovic - the lower-ranked player - to sustain the momentum, and it's just one break.

Nicole serving 1-4: 40/0 -> 40/40, ad Jankovic (BP), broken.

Dropping serve from 40/0 up is the worst psychological blow you can suffer in a single game. :( Nicole needs to get her act together quickly, or this match could get very embarrassing.

Jankovic serving for the first set at 5-1: 0/30, 15/30, broken.
Nicole serving to stay in the first set at 2-5: 0/15, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad Nicole, held.

She nearly let Jankovic pull out another break from 40/15, but that was a very important hold. The more games Nicole can get, the more momentum she'll have going into the second set...

Jankovic serving for the first set at 6-3: 0/15, broken.

...and the more pressure Jankovic will feel trying to close out this one! :)

Nicole serving to stay in the first set at 4-5: held (frozen-scoreboard misery).
Jankovic serving 5-5: broken (frozen-scoreboard misery).
Nicole serving for the first set at 6-5: held (frozen-scoreboard misery). Nicole won the first set 7-5 at 11:50 (37m).

Wow! Nicole did a 'Safina': from 1-5 to 7-5! :worship:

It will be very difficult for Jankovic to recover from that set - mentally, emotionally, and form-wise.

Second Set:
VAIDIŠOV _* *___*_ 3
JANKOVIC * * *@* * 6

Jankovic serving 0-0: 40/0, held.

I hope Nicole isn't resting on her laurels after winning the first set again. I have too much respect for Jankovic to assume that Nicole will inevitably win this match now - her form this tournament has been way too streaky to make such an arrogant assumption.

Nicole serving 0-1: 30/0, held.
Jankovic serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/40, ad Jankovic, held.
Nicole serving 1-2: 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad Nicole, held.

I thought this was about to follow the pattern of the first set, where Nicole was broken to go 1-3 down!

Jankovic serving 2-2: 40/0, held.
Nicole serving 2-3: 0/15, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad Jankovic (BP #3), broken.
Jankovic serving 4-2: 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad Jankovic, held.
Nicole serving to stay in the second set at 2-5: held (frozen-scoreboard misery).

Due to frozen scoreboard misery, I followed the rest of match at the following live-scores thread:
http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=259740&page=25 (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=259740&page=25)

Jankovic serving for the second set at 5-3: held to love. Jankovic won the second set 6-3 at 12:19 (29m).

Third Set:
VAIDIŠOV _____@*_ 2
JANKOVIC @*@*@__* 6

Nicole serving 0-0: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad Nicole, Deuce #2, ad Jankovic (BP #2), broken.

TheBoiledEgg: "Nicole snatching at shots"... "misses easy FH into net"...

Jankovic serving 1-0: 0/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 0-2: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad Jankovic (BP), broken.

TheBoiledEgg: "lifeless today"... "Df and 0-3*"

Seems like Nicole's three-setter yesterday has taken its toll!

Jankovic serving 3-0: held to love.
Nicole serving 0-4: 0/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Jankovic serving for the match at 5-0: 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.

At least Nicole has avoided the bagel that the haters on WTAworld were clamouring for. Now it's 1-5 again... could history repeat itself?

Nicole serving to stay in the match at 1-5: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 40/15, held.

TheBoiledEgg: "Nicole hitting well again"... "but too late i think"

Jankovic serving for the match at 5-2: 40/0 (3 MPs), Jankovic won 5-7 6-3 6-2 at 12:49 (third set 30m, match 1h36m).

Statistics
----------

Jankovic had a positive W:UE ratio of 22:13, while Nicole's was a negative 35:38 (in the first set, Nicole's W:UE was 19:10, while in the third set it was 6:16).

Nicole got 65% of her first serves in, winning 62% of the points when she did so, and 45% on second serve (Jankovic 73%, 72% and 48%). In the third set, Nicole's percentages slumped to 54%, 53% and 31%.

Nicole served 6 aces, Jankovic 4, and they committed 5 double faults each.

Nicole served only slightly faster than Jankovic: fastest 108-107 mph, average first serve 101-100 mph, average second serve 89-87 mph. Nicole's serve always seems faster to look at than the measurements imply!

Nicole broke 4 times from 9 break-points (3 times from 1-5 in the first set, and once from 0-5 in the third), Jankovic 6 times from 11 BPs (twice in the first set, once in the second and 3 times in the third).

Jankovic won 10 of 16 points at the net, Nicole 8 of 4.

In points, Jankovic won 91-77 (first set 30-37, second 32-23, third 29-17).

Quotes
------

Jankovic: "She would hit the ball and it would jump on the line. I was thinking, sometimes she hits it and she doesn't know where the ball is going."

Nicole: "That's very much not true! When I play, I'm aiming somewhere and trying to get the ball somewhere.

"I was trying to change it up, but then it was too late. I think in the first set, when I was coming back, was the only part where I was playing well, feeling the ball well."
