There's been an article today in L'Equipe about Mary. I put it both in French and in English (translation by me, sorry!):

A peine revenue, déjà disparue.

« Des hauts, des bas, des hauts, des bas »
Un an après son odyssée, Mary Pierce, 14e mondiale, replonge dans New York ne n’ayant qu’une vague idée de son potentiel réel.

Pierce, come what may

Between pains coming and going, last year finalist navigates visually

NY, from our special envoyé

« Have you seen Mary Pierce ? » « Do you know where she is ? » Since last Thursday, we had been looking for signs of last year’s finalist presence within Flushing Meadows Stadium. Nobody has crossed her way, nobody had met anyone who would have seen her. « Oh là, I am a ghost, exclaimed the invisible woman. But I came here on Friday to collect my badge, and have my raquets strung. After that, it’s true, I preferred training on courts away from here. But I did not hide. »
On Monday, in the late afternoon, we could finally see her within the Stadium. After 6 months spent on the hard shoulder because of an ill foot, Pierce got back to the Tour at the beginning of august in San Diego. That had been neither wonderful nor demoralizing. Simply logical loosing in the third round to Maria Sharapova when one does not have rhythm or landmarks. On that matter, she could not find any answer since then. Her adductors stiff as a US security guy, Pierce had to stay on it. Just come back, as soon vanished again.
In her Florida headquarters, she then began her US Open mission. « I’ve never thought I would not be here, not one minute, she says. 3 weeks was supposed to be enough. And today evertything’s fine. My adductors don’t hurt me anymore. My foot doesn’t either, that’s cool. As I never stopped training physically, the problem is not there. But I haven’t played enough, and that is the unknown factor. Let’s say I have already felt better, but I have already also felt worse.”

« Up and down, up and down » One year after her odyssey, Mary Pierce, 14th player in the World, is back in New York, having only a slight idea of her real potential. « When I took a look at the Stadium, on Friday, it moved me. I remembered being there last year, it felt strange. It reminds me of a good period : the final here (lost to Clijsters), the final in Fed Cup (lost to Russia) and the final of the Masters (lost to Amélie Mauresmo).»
Three phoney moments of happiness, not really entirely satisfying, nor totally bitter, and days after she would have like more shining. She had dreamt of a tender offer on the world leadership and of an unforgettable Wimbledon. But the pain at her foot, which occurred after a final lost against Amélie Mauresmo in Coubertin in mid-february, slipped between her and her desires. Once again, Pierce the mummy had had to leave and come back. « So is my career. Ups and downs, ups and downs. I have been designed to play tennis, God has given that gift to me, but he has wanted my life not to be only that. If a pain occurs, that’s always for a reason. And that’s always for the best in the end. This time, that was for me to enrich my personal life. »
So Mary Pierce has not cried long on her lot of injured person. She visited Africa for the first time (le Mozambique in june) which moved her. Since then, she has had the idea of « creating something » over there. She also launched the « website operation » with the help of Suzy, a friend of hers good at new technologies. And soon, young girls will be able to wear “Mary Pierce” pieces of clothe. But one day, her addiction to tennis came back. « I was surprised to be willing to look for matches everywhere on tv or to go on the web to look for scores.» Yesterday, she was supposed to enter the tournament against the dangerous russian girl Elena Vesnina (44th ), but rain showers delayed it.
Like in San Diego, the mysterious star is accompagnied here by the small man with the yellow hat. But what mission does Christian Fillol really fulfill, temporary coach since brother David gave up the family business ? « He gives me tips on strategy. That’s it. I do not like being alone on a tournament, but is that really a coach that I need ? Not so sure. » Right now, she is not so sure about many things.
