the unknown is vania king. i recall a poster the other day describing her as the worst professional tennis player he'd ever seen, after seeing her live. so if alicia is to lose this then something must be seriously wrong.

Just as long she wins that first match. I would be annoyed if she doesn't get past that first round.

Match report :

American Teen King Breezes Past Aussie Molik
by Kristen Sardis
Monday, August 28, 2006

Although rain delayed the first women’s singles match for just over an hour, fiesty 17-year-old Vania King made the wait worthwhile. The California native won her first-round match at the US Open, beating 25-year-old Australian Alicia Molik, 6-3, 6-2, Monday afternoon.

The hour-long match saw the 6’0 Australian, who has been plagued with injuries this year, being outrun by the younger and shorter King. Although Molik showed off her intense serve (often clocked over 100 mph), the turning point of the match was when King broke Molik, 6-3, to end the first set.

King was speedy and determined and her personality shined on court. Laughing at herself when she made a mistake and pumping her fist in the air after scoring, last year’s wild card moved with grace up and down the court. King broke Molik twice more at the beginning of the second set and never looked back, closing out the set, 6-2.

Next up for the 72nd-ranked King is 24-year-old Belgian and No. 2 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne.

I don't get it, Alicia is the friggin Olympics Bronze Medallist, she should have gotten back on track by now! Her country's tennis association should help her! :( Perhaps she needs to change her coach or method of training!

I was at that match and Molly is just a shadow of the player she was 2 years ago. The illness has really taken over and sadly I don't think she'll ever be the player she was.

She really was missing some shots by quite a way.
I hope I'm wrong but it was just sad to watch.
