MONTREAL (CP) - Canadians Aleksandra Wozniak, Stephanie Dubois and Marie-Eve Pelletier were given wild-card entries Wednesday into the $1.34 million US Rogers Cup tennis tournament.

The trio of Quebec players will compete next week at Uniprix Stadium against a field stacked with most of the sport's top stars, including world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo of France, No. 2 Kim Clijsters of Belgium and 2000 Rogers Cup champion Martina Hingis of Switzerland.

Wozniak, 18, of Blainville, Que., is Canada's top ranked player at No. 106. She won the Hamilton Challenger last month for a second year in a row and helped Canada defeat Argentina in Federation Cup play with a win over 31st-ranked Gisela Dulko.

Dubois, 18, of Laval, Que., is ranked 155th. Pelletier, 24, of Repentigny, Que., will compete in her fourth Rogers Cup.

Tournament director Eugene Lapierre has yet to assign the fourth wild-card spot, which will go to a WTA Tour player.

From nine to... three

August 12, 2006 - Of the nine Canadians entered in the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank qualifying and main draws, only three remain.

The qualifying rounds were cruel to the Canadian delegation, proof of the exceptional level of play at this Canadian Open. Toronto’s Sharon Fichman and Heidi El Tabakh, Valérie Tétreault of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., Rebecca Marino of British Columbia, Ontarian Ekaterina Shulaeva and Jillian O’Neill of Quebec played their hearts out but their efforts still didn’t allow them to make it through to the second round of qualifying.

On court at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal today, there will be an intense battle for the 12 spots remaining in the main draw.

The three Canadians still alive and looking to shine in front of a hometown crowd are Aleksandra Wozniak, Stéphanie Dubois and Marie-Ève Pelletier, each of whom received a wildcard directly into the main draw.
