View Full Version : Lindsay's Highest Quality Tennis Match Ever

What match of Davenport's has the best quality tennis from both opponents.

I think the Wimbledon 2005 4R Clijsters until Clijsters mind left her at 5-4 in the 3rd and the 2005 Wimbledon Final vs. Venus until Lindsay's back gave out.

Lindsay did not play that great in the Wimbly final. Some parts of the second set were just painful.

"painful" is an understatement.

of the ones I've seen(which ain't alot compared to some on here). 2004 LA final vs. Serena, 2004 USO R16 vs. Big Vee, 05 Indian Wells semi vs. Maria, and 2005 Wimbledon R16 vs. Wafflehead (should've been 6-3 6-4 that "missed" backhand really screwed her up for a little bit, but her serve and forehands in the 3rd set were awesome)

you're right, that match against Clijsters was awesome (besides parts of the second set tiebreak)...there are a bunch of matches where she played really well and blew her opponents away, so they weren't too exciting (ex: 2003 Amelia Island against Patty Schnyder). One that always sticks out in my mind is the 2003 Indian Wells semi against Capriati where Lindsay won 64 46 64, hitting over 50 winners!

ooo also the 2004 San Diego and LA finals, that was some good stuff ;) I think she actually played better in SD against Myskina

but if we're going WAY back, you'd have to look at some of the many titles she won in Tokyo and Philadelphia, mainly the matches against Hingis...ace, winner, ace, winner...just the way we like it!

Davenport def Hingis Chase Final 1999.

I don't think I have ever seen a woman play better, against high quality opposition.

Australian Open 2000 was almost a reprise, but she had that lapse at the end. In recent times she was brilliant against Clijsters at Wimbledon last year, would have been the perfect match had it ended 6-3 6-4.

The question was about Lindsay's highest quality tennis match ever against high quality opponents.
IMO it was 1999 YEC final against the SwissMiss, or IW 2000 final (vs Martina), or 2000 Philadelphia final (vs Martina). Or maybe 2001 Tokyo final (vs Martina)...but maybe it was 2003 IW semi vs Jenny? Also 1999 USO quarters(vs Mary) and the semi (lost to Rena), plus 2000 USO final (lost to Vee) were great matches at the end, from both sides.
But it certainly wasn't 2005 Wimbledon final, or round of 16 cos there was really too many errors. It couldn't be any of the 2004 california events, cos neither of Lindsay's opponents were playing well in those, or Lindsay didn't play her best at all.

She played great against Vee in the 4th round of the US Open 04 other than that final wobble on serve at the end she played flawless stuff and Williams played really well in that match and her reaction when she won was priceless just look at my avatar

9 deuces,5 break points,5 match points and the game lasted for about 15 minutes and I remember thinking if she loses from here I will die but thankfully she served an unreturnable and the rest is history :bounce:

That win over Venus was certainly one to savour! Its difficult to chose one performance overall but I remember when watching the Wimby 4th rnd V Kim I was blown away by the quality of her groundstrokes and the way she found the corners.

2000 IW FINAL, 1998 ACURA CLASSIC FINAL, 1998 US OPEN FINAL, 1999 WIMBLEDON FINAL. I think anyway.

Wimbledon 4R 2005 v Kim, best match that I've seen her play anyway :worship: , IW semi 2005 v Maria also :p and the LA final 2004, I know Serena wasn't at her best, but didn't Lindsay make just 1 UE in the first set?

Serena didn't play great in that match. Venus played okay at the USO. Maria awful tennis in that match. And she really did miss that backhand. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

ive STILL not seen that match! I really should get hold of it. I was in the queue at the time queueing to see Lindsay in the quarter finals!! ha ha not that shed even won her 4th round match. Well we had a little tiny portable TV, but you couldnt even see the ball - so there wasnt much point really!

you really should, Lindsay's forehand was amazing in that match.

for personal reasons, I love the USO 4th round against Venus, so much drama in that last game. When Lindsay screamed at the end, so did I.

I haven't seen the Capriati match from IW in 03, I should really track that one down.

I know they weren't playing great. NOBODY beats Serena Williams 6-1 6-3 or Maria Sharapova 6-0 6-0 when they're playing great. I just enjoyed the fact that Lindsay played well against players that she had losing records against and kept her cool in all three.
And if only Lindsay had dismissed big Vee at Wimbledon the way she did at USO.
On a side note. Was anyone else superstitious about Lindsay's 3 major wins having a second set of 7-5? When she served for the match against Vee at 6-5 I was just sure she had it. 6-3 7-5, 6-4 7-5, 6-1 7-5, ...should've been 6-4 7-5 :(

Yup, I noticed that about her second sets in slam wins too.
It would have been to perfect for her to win Wimbledon twice by the same scoreline. sigh. :(

I'd go with Wimbledon final 1999. She really played flawless there. MAde VERY few mistakes. Played PERFECT tactically against Steffi. Volleyed superbly, was never broken, saved two bp with unreturnable serve and winner... and it was Steffi and it was Wimbledon.
I think that is the best I ever saw her play.

I've still never seen her much-talked about YEC final thrashing of Martina - one of the matches I want most!

But from my memory, her absolute best matches were beating Schnyder 6-1, 6-1 in Charleston 2003 on clay (!!!) and Myskina 6-1, 6-1 in San Diego 2004. Absolute perfection.

Andrew suggested the YEC 1999 to me. That awful American journalist person who dresses like a woman interviewed Anne Davenport in the stands during the middle of the second set.

It was a good match.

I was at the 2005 4R Wimbly match with Kim and it was breathtaking tennis ~ she should have won in two but it made for some drama to go the full distance. I could hardly bear to watch the tie break

The USO 04 4R against Venus, the IW 2003 with Capriati, the 03 SF Amelia Island with Capriati, the Stanford 04 final with Venus, the USO QF with Serena and the Slams she won get my votes. I watch those matches over and over and never tire of them.

For the match where she wiped the floor with her opponent with amazing tennis, my vote would be the 03 Aus Open 3R against Panova ~ wham, bam, thank you ma'am!

God, I miss her!
