Silvano Beltrametti last saturday! With the fastest intermediate time of all racers he lost control and crashed through the safety net.

From one second to an other his promising career - he was the best newcomer Switzerland had for a long time - was over with the devasting diagnosis that he's paralysed from the 7 vertebrae downwards.

For his recovery which will take a long time I wish him, his family and friends all the energy and power they need.<br />Just hope the Swiss team will be able to overcome this shock as well and keep fighting for good results. That's what Silvano wants most!!

Goooo Silvano keep fighting!!

Sidenote - At the same evening the Swiss-Sport-Awards took place where he was nominated for the Newcomer of the year - he finished second. Of course the ambiance was pretty down becouse of that terrible accident.

Today he's been moved from the hospital in Grenoble to the swiss paralysed center in Notzwil. There they will upgrade his spine and prepare him for his live in the wheelchair.

Wish you a good recovery Silvano.

Successfull five hour operation.

Today Silvano finally had the long awaited surgery to stabilise his spine. They fixed his back with two metal stick on each side of his spine from the 3 to the 10 vertabrea, placing screws at the 3,5,8 and 10 vertabrea. The spinal marrow is damaged on a lenght of 5 cm (1,2 inch) which is the reason that he's paralised from the 7 vertabrea downwards. In about 5 days they'll start with reha.

Silvano all the force and pover you need to get over this!!

After 26 days he gave yesterday his first pressconference at the spz in Notzwil. Presenting himself for the first time in a wheelchair infront of around 60 media ppl.

He looked pretty composed about what happened to him. Saying that it's gods will that he has to go this way now. He was able to show the world that he's among the best skiers and that made him happy. He doesn't think that he might do some paralysed sports but he might change his mind later. As for right now he can't watch any downhill races as that would still hurt to much. From one second to an other on he had to change his aims. Before he was working 24 hrs for the ski sport. Now he's happy about every little progress like beeing able to eat again on his own staying an hr. longer in the wheelchair and so on. Since the accident he had quite a few ups and downs where he was glad that he had his family and friends around him. He also thanked to all the ppl. sending him cards, e-mails or signing his homepage (So far he got about 8'000 get well wishes!!)

He still has to stay in Nottwil for an other 4 or 5 month to get used to his new live.

Silvano the sparkel in your eyes are gone. But I'm sure back it'll come back one day soon!! You're able to manage this situation never give up!!

Hallo Frau Doris!:wavey:
Thank you for the news. I can understand that that tragic event touched you so much. I have never followed ski very closely, but Régine's death was a big shock here in France, and I think that millions of people - including myself - hoped for an impossible miracle during the hours following her accident. I also remember Ulrike Maier's fatal crash...
Hopefully Silvano Beltrametti will find new meanings for his life. At least he can still feel the love of his dear ones. That alone makes wonders.

Gmt Régines accident really was a bad start into the ski season. And also shocked ppl around here. Then came Silvanos accident which even touched us more (hmmm he was the only real big hope we had amog the young ones guess that's why and of course he's swiss so that's why we got more infos about him than abotu Régine.) It's true there have been quite a few shocking ski accidents lately. Ulrike, thand Reinold Radelmeier or something linke that (he had a deadly shute some years back at a training course at the Lauberhorn downhill the longest downhill in the circuit.)
Just keep the fingers crossed that no more such accident will happend but you can't awoid crashes I guess.

After 132 days in the SPZ in Nottwil Silvano Beltrametti was able to go back home. (At his parents house they added a wheelchair suitable little appartement for him.) He really did a great rehabilitation during the last 4 month and is now looking forward to his near future. He'll start a 6 month "testing" time at a sportmanagement office in chur. Right now he's looking forward to his next big trip. He'll aknowleged the invitation to his friends (Franco Caveng a fellow skiracer) wedding which will be held in Brasil!!

Silvano I wish you all the best for whatever you do!! It's great to see that you haven't lost your great will of fighting!! Keep it up!!

Good luck!! And stay positive!!
