do you want to start a war here or what? :p

an american who learned what used to be called serbo-croatian told me it's like difference between american english and british english. a czech translator told me something similar. it definitely can't be compared to portuguese and spanish, because "croatian" and "serbian" are more than easily mutually intelligible. but people from there might tell you other stuff.

anyway, ivanovic all the way. then lukic and zoric.

Thanks so much! I used to have a friend from Croatia and she really disliked Serbia.

She did teach me "ya te volim" and "pisi me vrit" :D I guess they translate the same in Serbian.

yeah, they all dislike each other too much  each way, with just a little effort you would be able to communicate with them all. but some of the expressions can be considerably different.

so, did she love you or just told you how to say that to someone? :p

So what language do they speak in Slovenia and Macedonia? And is Bosnian a language and also very similar to Serbian and Croatian?

slovenian and macedonian are clearly different.

as for the rest - they are still considered one language by linguists. the most neutral definition is the following: serbo-croatian is a set of dialects and standard languages spoken by the people of serbia, croatia and bosnia. all standard languages are based on one dialect, stokavian. the other dialects are kajkavian, cakavian and torlak (unrecognised).

about 20 million people speak this/these language/languages. one of its variants is actually my native language, but i'm more competent in german now.
