Although Mary hasn't played for a long time she should win it. I think she wouldn't come to San Diego if she weren't fit or so.
I say Mary in 2 set but not easily.

Pierce will either win something like 6-4 6-3 or Bammer will win via retirement/walkover.

this isn't a showdown. Though Bammer has a last name that could crush any opponent, Pierce will crush Bammer in tennis.

I just went to La Costa resort yesterday and watched Pierce stretching and practicing. I am really amazed by how HARD she hit and she moves with no problem. She might not be consistent, but her shots are rock solid. She hits the hardest among all the players I watched yesterday. So, she could be a surprising contender!

Bammer is going to make Mary hit a lot of balls, which could be troublesome coming off a long lay off. I'll tenatively say Mary in 3, but I wouldn't be too shocked either way.

Anything can happen when a player comes back from a long layoff. Especially when they've had as long a career s Mary.

Odds are though that Mary will be successful given her opponent. Mary will control the match, either she wins it or she loses it. that's the typee of game she plays...all offense.

Bam Bam has a chance. She has to play some crafty tennis.
She needs to go for some angles. She needs to bring Mary to net on her terms.
She needs to serve well. She needs to move Mary and finish some points off at net.

I don't know what Mary is going to show up. She has no coach right now. We haven't seen where her movement is.
This is an important match for Mary. She needs the points. Once she leaves the top 10, it's going to be tough to get back. I think she will come through in two close sets.

Pierce in straight sets, to kick off her comeback!

Great to see you back Mah-ree!

Maam will surely win this with her power game and all round snooteriety. I'm sure she must have learned to play tennis while balancing a book on her head - it'll be great to have her back!

pierce shouldn't have much problem here. her opponent won't present very many problems, perfect first match back for mary who should have WAY too much power.

Mary 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 She was training before French Open and withdrew from RG and WImbledon coz she was not ready. She must be ready if she is playing.

I think because people don't know much about her

she's a lefty with not much power, but she can hang in rallies and run down lots of balls. she can hit some really neat shots and is extremely crafty.

i think that if mary is in reasonable form, her power will be too much for bammer.
however, i think sybille could be a challenge for mary considering how long she has been out of the game.

nonetheless im going for mary in 2 - 7-5 6-2

Pierce was hitting with a very powerful male partner who seems to also be a French.

First I saw Pierce stretching on the golf course nearby and her family and friends were standing nearby. She did some warm up for about 15 minutes and then hit some shots with her male partner. Then, I think they play a set, and tons of people were watching as if it was a real match. She blasted some amazing winners and really impressed me with her form though being out for so long. I also watched Schnyder, Hingis, Sharapova, Vadisova, Dementieva, Sugiyama, Ivanovic, and more praticsing. I have to say Pierce hitted the hardest from yesterady.

Hopefully it'll be Mary.

Heart says 2 straight sets, Head says 3 tough sets, but it's just good to have her back. :D

I think Mary will win, if she has been healthy for a while and has been practicing she can definately work herself into form again. If she has an on day, she wins easily. One close set, the other easy.

But it's great to have her back, we need the veterans! Allez Mahree!

Pierce usually takes a while to come back fully. Bammer has a shot. I think Pierce will win, but I would be shocked if she beat Sharapova, and I would not be surprised if she didn't make that QF.

very hard to tell. Mary has played a handful of matches this year and has showed every level of form throughout.

If she plays decent she should have enough to get past Bammer. Sybille is a pretty tough player though and won't hand it to her.

Mary will win this first match, the next tour/oponent will give her a better advice on her present situation i think and what to expect from the next USOP.

COME ON GO QUEEN MARY ! GOOD LUCK.

SYBILLE will make pierce play a lot of balls. i think if pierce doesn't move as good as she did last year she will have problems against sybille.
