meh, ok.
i'm someone who finds it weird that people support their fellow countrymen/women almost purely BECAUSE they are from the same country as themselves. i find it very weird in a sport like tennis, which apart from the olympics and fed/davis cup is clearly a sport for individuals and not for countries. i jaccept that plenty of people don't agree with that view, but still, i find it weird.
i find it ever weirder that people would suddenly start supporting an adopted member of their country as well  was just curious when i saw all the serbs in here when i'd never noticed any before the nationality change.

Well Chris, I cannot agree with you for the next points:

1. Individuals in tennis always represent their countries. Na Li, Djocovic and many others become real ambassadors of their countries. That is why India, China and some other emerging countries have HUGE budget for tennis development.

2. It does not matter where a tennis player wins, everybody see the flag and the country - always a point of proundess for people from the country.

3. In case of Vesna she chooses the country not like that, for example like some girls and boys from Russia went to play for Kazakhstan of course because of support and respect from Kazakh Federation and not becasue of national identity. I do not know why Vesna went to Serbia because we never read her interview or something from her, but she is 50% Serbian, has the citezenship from the birth, can speak Serbian I suppose. Means for people from Serbia and Serbian people she is like their part. And if people like that it is not weird at all.

4. By the way I saw some articles in Serbian newspapers even before when she made some good result in AO last year they wrote Vesna represents Russia but Serbian by blood.. And I see now a lot of articles of Support for some players like Tomic, Petkovic and others who has Serbian origin.. so it is not weird at all;)

1st: she served (at least) twice for the set at 5*-4 and 6*-5
2nd: she was down 0*-2 and that service game lasted for like 15 min and she saved multiply BP(that game was i think deciding in this set)...

Yeah, Vesna blew that. Actually surprised she recovered in the 2nd, thought it was going to be a bagel. Couldn't get ahead in the third.

Tough, she'll lose 98 points in the rankings. (Was in the main draw last year, and reached the second round.)

I must say that I find it strange to cheer for her now, I wish her all the best, but I'm not a fan yet. It's just that I have supported all Serbian players since they were juniors. I've followed JJ and Ana for years, not only because they're Serbs, I really find them likeable. But the thing with Vesna is strange, she's not a junior, I know very little about her. If she gets to slam MD, I'll probably cheer for her. Just like JJExpress said, we have 2 players in top 100, so it would be great if there could be some other Serb to cheer for. Of course, I have faves that are not Serbs, but it's normal for me to want Serbian tennis to be better than it is. Australian fans support some adopted players, Gajdosova for example. Nothing bad about that, really.

:yeah:

This season Vesna is only player out of TOP200 which qualify to Wimbledon MD, but on other hand she is player which lose less games (only 12 in 3 matches!!!) than anyone else on road to Main Draw!

Also, thanks to this Vesna's big personal success, hers motherland fatherland Serbia will have for the first time ever (including there former Yugoslavia era!) 4 girls into Main Draw of some Grand Slam event! And since Serbia become independent country, for the first time ever at some GS tournament there will be more WTA players from Serbia than ATP

So this Vesna success is already historic

I wish her some unseeded opponent in 1st round.

Not only that. Some poster was surprised that we all support Vesna now, but it has to be said that we didn't have many players who managed to reach GS MD in the whole tennis history of our country, including Yugoslavia. Every time some new player gets a chance to play in such a big event, it's a huge success.

It would be unfair if she did. They can't replace JJ and Ana, and after all that BJ and Alex did for Fed cup, it would be disrespectful to them if they were to be replaced. She can play next year ext year, she is official Serbian not more than half a year ago:)

If Veca reaches qfs (and plays Ana, i hope!) she will earn 60 pts and be around 125th in the rankings. And a couple more good OITF eresults, she coul skip AO2013 qualies!!! :bounce:

I have a question. Vesna was "Manasieva" when she was playing for Russia. Is her father's name Manasiev? It's not a typical Serbian name? Or she had her Russian surname after her mother?

I think she is probably improving significantly. :yeah:

I had a chance to visit couple of her matches.. I saw with Voskoboeva and Halep.. Seems yes, she is progressing. I saw a coach some young guy with her who was coming out every match which I visited and telling Vesna what to do..

In match with Voskoboeva when Vesna was leading 3-1 something happened with her leg and she almost stop running.. When it was 3-4 (Vesna lost easy 3 games in a row) doctors come out on court and I saw they gave her some painkillers ans frozen up her leg. Right after Vesna won 3 games serving and receiving at very high level..

With Simona I was really surprised with the power shots of Vesna.. And almost no mistakes..

Unfortunately was unable to see match with Ana but my friend was there and told me in 1st set Vesna and Ana showed really nice level and both had a lot of winners. I read interview with Ana and she said Vesna has power shots not easy to play, good service and she hope this girl will progress and will get higher in ranking soon

I hope Vesna will continue that way.. By the way if someone can reaf russian here is rather big interview from Vesna explaining many questions about her decision to play for Serbia:

Vesna won doubles title in Barnstaple :cheer:

Yes, nice play, good volleys and good service and Vesna does not make mistakes from her backhand at all.. I see that like a strong point of her game. At the same time I saw her very good forehands in Moscow..

Hope she will develop her game more

Anyway she will be approx 105 in doubles which gives her good chance to play more WTA events in doubles as well as in singles, cause as I understand she will be not lower than 120 in singles from the next week - means she can play almost all WTA events in qualies like Indian Wells and Miami

Hope she will go that way to progress more in her game

So I should admit from the time she join Serbian Team (may 2012) her game is really improving. And I should also say that I saw her playing last year when she was 86 in singles and I see her now - now she is much more stronger and clever in her single game!

So great ending of the season! She jumped 100 places in ranking in 3 months (she was something like 216 before US Open) - means she has a class and she is able to progress in the future!!!

We know Vesna here in Moscow very good and we know the place where she used to train when she was a junior and we are really happy she came back to origins I mean to her historical motherland and now is building up a new life with Serbia.. Good Luck Vesna!!!

I hope Vesna will progress and please Vesna play more WTA events - that's your way to do I am sure:):):)

Here are Vesna's rankings for the last two years:
2012 117
2011 111

She's been very steady, just on the outside of the top 100, so this year, she should try to end it *within* the top 100.

Her draw is not the easiest, and her first match is likely to be a battle. She is 1-1 against MJMS, with each match going three sets. Vesna won the last three setter, which was at the AO in 2008.

Igorche
Dec 27th, 2012, 10:06 AM
Her hardest opponent will be MJMS and if she beat her I think that she will qualify.

In the second round will probably play against Mattek-Sands, another tough opponent but I think it's easier than MJMS.

In last round, in my opinion, she will play against Monica Puig and that would be the easiest match (of these three).

In any case if Vesna play like at end of year she will qualify.

Almost all points for Vesna is counts since Roland Garros, and if she wins AO 1st round she will be already into TOP100 (after todays win she will be for sure into TOP110, but this points will not be counted in next 2 weeks).

But way more important for Vesna in this case is fact that she just secured $30K prize money even if she lose 1st round match in Melbourne, which is about 50% money more than she reach for hers best 2012 result (Moscow QF) and thanks to fact that she not defending almost anything till RG we can say that she is already sure bet for French Open and Wimbledon direct entry (means around $30Kx2 secured). For players which is long time out of TOP100 (and so far for the most part of career) financial instability and frustrations can be very big problem, but already now its clean that Vesna in whole 2013 will be in position to be focused only on hers tennis and to try to stay (or to improve) in this great shape from 2nd half of last season - she is now somewhere close to #70 in rankings if we count only points since RG/2012!

Dolonc: I would love to debut in Cair

For the "Žurnal" from Melbourne: Vojin Velickovic

Serbia is stronger for Vesna Dolonc on all fronts. Except that she will likely to make her debut in our team in a month against Slovakia in Nis, Dolonc provided a total of seven participants at the Australian Open from Serbia.

http://www.zurnal.rs/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/dolonc2.jpg

In the FQR she easy declassed Canadian Dubois with 6:1, 6:0. For a tennis player who was born in Moscow 23 years ago, this was a great success, as it marks the return to the big stage.

- It's not my first time to play in Melbourne, two years ago I beat here Bartoli in the second round. But this is the first time I was here as a Serbian tennis player. It's a wonderful feeling to be back on the big tournament. I worked a lot, I've had some injuries, now everything is paying off. I'm happy because I made a good result for Serbia - she told with unhidden joy.

Match with Slovakia in the Fed Cup is getting closer. Since last May when she decided to play as a Serb, she is waiting permission to make her debut in our team.

- I think I'll play. I'm waiting for another document and I hope to get it until match in Nis. I'd like to debut in Cair. My dad is from Nis, there is my uncle, my father's friends. It will be perfect. I'm sure we can beat Slovakia. I was in Nis last year to complete some documents and to get new Serbian passport.

She is convinced that this year Serbia can go further in the Fed Cup.

- I do not know yet who is going to play for us, but we can win the first place.
