Next week Nicole will be playing Stanford. Since Lindsay withdrew, Nicole will now be the #3 seed! She didn't play here last year, so she has a great chance at earning ranking points. The field isn't that strong, so with a nice draw - I think Nicole should reach at least the semis.

Looking to the future / Stanford event long on youth

"There are a lot of future stars here,'' Barrett said. "I wouldn't be surprised, in the next 18 to 24 months, to see one of these players win a Grand Slam."

Among the brightest of the young stars in the field is No. 3 seed Nicole Vaidisova, ranked No. 12 in the world.

The 17-year-old Czech reached the French Open semifinals this season. She defeated top seed -- and reigning Wimbledon champion -- Amelie Mauresmo in the fourth round of the French and then knocked off Venus Williams in the quarterfinals. Vaidisova has won six professional titles in her young career.

ALL-ACCESS HOUR QUOTES

Nicole Vaidisova (No. 3 Seed)

“I don’t think the field here is weak. Kim (Clijsters) is sitting over there and she is a Grand Slam Champion and Patty (Schnyder) has reached the semis of a Grand Slam so I don’t see the field as being weak at all.”

“I have three tournaments before the US Open. I want to do well everywhere and this is a good warm-up to get some matches in.”

“I’m fine with the heat. I don’t live in Florida but I spend a lot of time there so I’m used to it. Plus I just came from Sacramento so this is pretty much a cool down for me. It was like 112 up there.”

Sure. The link is: http://gostanford.cstv.com/livestats/tennis/StanfordTennis.html

You can click the Court 1 link at the top and it should open in Windows Media Player. Or just copy/paste this into the player: http://mfile.akamai.com/16410/live/reflector:58480.asx

The live video isn't that bad, but there's no sound and scores on the screen. So it helps to have both the video and the scoreboard up at the same time.

Nicole Vaidisova (winner over Sybille Bammer, 6-1, 6-4)

“It was my first match on hardcourts (since April), so I was a little nervous. I played well from the start. (Sybille Bammer) has been a tough player the last couple of months so I was happy with the result. She served pretty well, and is tricky because she is a lefty and has some good weapons. I stayed in control and took up the pace when I needed to.”

(On playing Stosur in the quarterfinals) “I played her in Australia and she is a big server (6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win in 2006). You have to be ready going in against her because she has good volleys and good hands. It is a totally different game than today. I need to go out there and focus and play my game.”

Vaidisova and Schnyder ease into Stanford quarter-finals
Fri Jul 28, 2006 05:39 AM BST Printer Friendly | Email Article | RSS

STANFORD, Ca., July 27 (Reuters) - Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova trounced Austria's Sybille Bammer 6-1 6-4 to reach the Bank of the West Classic quarter-finals on Thursday.

The third seed, who beat world number one Amelie Mauresmo and five-times grand slam Venus Williams at this year's French Open, encountered few problems against the left-handed Bammer.

"It's my first match on hard courts this summer and I played pretty well from the start," said Vaidisova, who held serve throughout the match. "I got in a good rhythm early and stayed in control."

The 12th-ranked Vaidisova next faces Australian Samantha Stosur as she continues her bid for a seventh career title.

"That would be really nice, but right now I'm in the quarter-finals and have a long way to go," the 17-year-old said.

I changed up the pace and that worked very well. I’m happy to be in the semifinals and looking forward to tomorrow night.”

Well Nicole lost... Really could have been a different match had Nicole taken the first set. Had a lot of chances to do so...

After dropping the first set she didn't play well at all. Kim was just too good.

Still a good week, having nothing to defend, and now onto San Diego...

Vaidisova
Jul 29th, 2006, 11:48 PM
Kim:

“The younger players play from the start like they have nothing to lose. Once it gets to five-all or six-all that’s when experience can play a little bit of a role; they can get a little bit nervous and might not go for shots as much as in the beginning. (Nicole) is a really good player. She is so accurate at times with her serve and it is really hard to read.”

“I practiced with Nicole in the beginning of the week and got a feel for how hard she hit the ball. She hits the ball very deep and likes to keep rallies short. As soon as she gets an opportunity, she goes for it.”

Nicole Vaidisova

“I definitely did not serve well and that played a big part today. Especially in the first set, I would have had a couple of other opportunities if I had served better. I played fairly well in the first set, but a serve is a big part of a game to be missing.”

“She played well the whole time and I made some errors in the second set that she took advantage of. She’s a tough player and I knew that coming in. I have some pointers for next time we play and will work on a couple of things. She’s a great mover, is very fast, and hits the ball very deep in the court. She just keeps fighting for every point.”

“There were a lot of positive things for me. I had a set point and lots of opportunities. I know I can play a good match against her.”

“At the tough points, Kim hit her best shots and served well. You can tell she’s been there before.”

Vaidisova
Jul 30th, 2006, 12:10 AM
A frustrated Vaidisova, who had trouble containing her temper all day, then hit a ball toward her stepfather and coach, Alex Kodat, who was sitting courtside.

"I don't feel my temper had an effect on how I played but emotions are part of the game and I'll always be that way," said Vaidisova, who doubled-faulted 10 times. "I just had no rhythm on my serve."

Nicole played very bad last night, especially in the second set.her serve was not better too. whatever, she have to keep fighting when she looses and even if she plays bad,but she was going to be frustated and she was acting bad, like she was really in trouble but kim 's defense.but, still nicole have a lot to improve on hard court, she's a very good player, and her defeat last night can be a good experience for her. She knows that she can win against kim,and the others players on the top 10,no doubt about that.

Nicole: "It was my first match on hard courts this summer, so I was a little nervous. I played pretty well from the start. I got in a good rhythm early; I stayed in control, and took up the pace when I needed to.

"She has been a tough player the last couple of months, so I was happy with the result. She served pretty well, and is tricky because she is a lefty and has some good weapons. I stayed in control and took up the pace when I needed to.

[Re. winning the title]
"That would be really nice, but right now I'm in the quarter-finals and have a long way to go."

Quarter-final (Friday 28th July)

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [3] d. Samantha Stosur, 6-4 6-2

Nicole before the match: "I played her in Australia and she is a big server. You have to be ready going in against her, because she has good volleys and good hands. It is a totally different game than today. I need to go out there and focus, and play my game."

Nicole after the match: "I didn't start out the greatest, but I stayed positive, and was able to come back and play well.

"I'm happy about today. I just played my game like I did yesterday. I played fast and just tried to hit winners. I didn't have that much trouble with her serve. I tried to change up the pace sometimes, and that worked very well.

"I'm excited to be in the semi-finals, and looking forward to tomorrow night."

Semi-final (Saturday 29th July)

- NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [3] lt. KIM CLIJSTERS [1], 5-7 2-6

Mingin' Clijsters has a lot to answer for, beating the wonderful Vera Zvonarëva in the quarter-finals, and now Nicole. She is guilty of crimes against my Eternal Fanship! :fiery:

www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com/): "Clijsters recovered from a 3-1 first set deficit, saved a set-point with a second-serve ace trailing 5-4, and subsequently steamrolled No.3-seeded Czech phenom Nicole Vaidišová for a 75 62 victory in the afternoon semifinal. The Belgian was pressured by Vaidišová's powerful play early on, but the teenager grew more erratic as the match went on, and by the end had accumulated 44 errors."

Matthew Cronin/Reuters: "Clijsters exhausted the 17-year-old Czech Vaidišová in long rallies, and kept her off balance by varying the speed of her replies."

Dave:
>>>
After battling gamely through the first set, Nicole held a set point on Clijsters serve at 5-4 but a close linecall went against the Czech starlet -- as the Belgian struck an ace on the edge of the centre line. That moment proved decisive as Clijsters held on, broke and then served out the opening set to break the resistance of her young but dangerous opponent.

Nicole was frustrated as a normally reliably serve was nowhere to be found today, and it really made life difficult and frustrating out there for the rising star.

Nicole quotes
-------------

{before the match}
"I have never played Kim, so that will be a first if we play tomorrow. She is a great player, and a great person on and off the court. We practised together a couple of days ago, and she was really nice."

{after the match}
"At the tough points, Kim hit her best shots and served well; you can tell she's been there before. She's a tough player, and I knew that coming in. I have some pointers for next time we play, and will work on a couple of things.

"She's a top player. She's had those situations many times before. I didn't stop playing because I got frustrated with my serve.

"I don't feel my temper had an effect on how I played, but emotions are part of the game and I'll always be that way. I just had no rhythm on my serve.

"I definitely did not serve well, and that played a big part today. Especially in the first set, I would have had a couple of other opportunities if I had served better. I played fairly well in the first set, but a serve is a big part of a game to be missing.

"She played well the whole time, and I made some stupid errors in the second set that she took advantage of. She's a great mover, is very fast, and hits the ball very deep in the court. She just keeps fighting for every point.

"There were a lot of positive things for me. I was up 3-2. I had a set-point and lots of opportunities. I know I can play a good match against her."

[from Nicole Vaidišová's Player Blog]
"I think I played well, especially in the first set. I had a chance to take the first set, but Kim served this ripper up the 'T' on her second serve (her second serve!) that was just too good."

Clijsters quotes
----------------

{before the match}
"It is always interesting to play against players who are young, doing well and are motivated. She is an aggressive player with a good serve."

{after the match}
"When you play those younger players, from the start they have nothing to lose, and it's like any other match for them. Once it gets to 5-5 or 6-6, that's when experience can play a little bit of a role; they can get nervous and might not go for shots as much as in the beginning.

"Nicole is a really good player. She is so accurate at times with her serve and it is really hard to read.

"I practised with Nicole in the beginning of the week, and got a feel for how hard she hit the ball. She hits the ball very deep, and likes to keep rallies short. As soon as she gets an opportunity, she goes for it.

[Re. her second-serve ace at set-point down]
"I don't know what I was thinking. Sometimes it just comes into your mind. Without thinking about it, you do it. Sometimes that's better. There, I just decided to go for it. Lucky enough, it hit the line.

"My level is getting better with each match. That's what you try to aim for. I'm not at my best yet, but I want to improve, and when you want to, that's when you will."

sarsmile: "Nicole Vaidisova [sic] may be a great singles player but she needs some serious work in doubles. She looked awkward and out of position most of the time, and seriously uncomfortable at net. She's got such good reach you'd think she'd be dangerous, but not without some more work apparently."

Nicole: "It's really hot and humid. But it was okay. I definitely enjoyed it. [World Team Tennis] is funky.

"It's all come together quite good. Everything's getting 100% there. But I still have to improve."

This was Nicole's only WTT tie of 2006. In fact, it was from WTT in 2004 that I first ever heard of Nicole Vaidišová, after a 15-year-old Nicole beat newly-crowned Wimbledon-champion Maria Sharapova 5-3!!!

Nicole has never played Maria outside of World Team Tennis. Maria has never lost to a player younger than herself in a match that counts (i.e. on the WTA Tour or the ITF Women's Circuit, or in a Grand Slam). I've a sneaking suspicion it's going to be Nicole who will one day end that astonishing record!
