Frinton-on-Sea is a small seaside town (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaside_resort) in Essex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essex), England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England), in the Tendring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tendring) district. It is part of the Frinton and Walton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frinton_and_Walton) parish. Until late Victorian times, only a tiny hamlet existed with a church, several farms and a handful of cottages. Then, the whole area was purchased by a developer with a view to building an exclusive seaside town for the wealthy to holiday in.

Due to this beginning, the town has a particularly conservative nature - even today: until recently the town made boast of having no public houses within its confines. Frinton only has 2 points of entry by road, one being an unadopted road coming from Walton in the north or through the railway gates. Certain people maintain that you are only a proper Frintonian if you live on the seaward side of these gates (or 'inside the gates'). Once geographically distinct, a series of housing estate developments now line the roads between the towns of Frinton and Walton and the villages of Kirby Cross and Kirby-Le-Soken. Within their now informally aggregated boundaries live many thousands of people.

Frinton has excellent shopping facilites. Once described as 'The Bond Street of East Anglia', its singular shopping street Connaught Avenue still has many small private shops, national chains and almost all high street banks. In 1992, the first Fish and Chip shop was opened in Frinton. Named "Nice Fish and Chips", it met much disapproval from the local residents who fought its arrival. Since then, in 2000, the first pub opened inside the gates ('The Lock and Barrell'). This was a milestone in the town's history, and the arrival split the town in two between those who insisted that admitting a pub to the town would be the first step to its ruin, and those who desired the practicalities of having somewhere to socialise after 8 or 9pm.

Went to watch the 1st round of qualifying yesterday. Could watch all the matches at once as played on courts 9 - 12, with the spectators sat at the side of court 9, so obviously didn't get that great a view of court 12. The courts are in very good condition (especially considering the recent hot dry weather) and are certainly in much better state than Felixstowe's (which were very worn even at the start of the week).
As you can see from the scores they were some big gulfs in ability in some of the matches yesterday, with quite a few players playing who would struggle to get into some of the more popular $10ks.

Not going today with only the final qualifying round to be played, but on yesterday's performances I'd predict the following players to qualify: Galinier (once she got her game together, she looked the best player in yesterday's field), Fitzpatrick, Cetnik, Craven, Scarfi, Richards (could be very close against Hingley), Webster, De Bruyn (my guess is she was the oldest player playing yesterday).

Interesting that the Camara sisters (who I had never seen play before) are down as British. Yet, along with their Dad, and a male player (not sure if he was related, as the OOP page I got only had the ladies matches), they were speaking in Portuguese (at least that's what it sounded like) the majority of the time, and when anyone spoke to them in English, their replies were quite limited, as if they hadn't been learning English for very long.

Finally Broady was hampered by a right shoulder problem, for which she received treatment at the end of the second set.

Jul 17th, 2006, 04:51 PM
the Camarra sisters are now listed as Brazilian again :wavey:

Jul 17th, 2006, 06:13 PM
Yes, I've just checked on the ITF site, which confirms that they're Brazillian. The younger one, Marilia is only 14.

They live here, near to my home, in Fortaleza/Brazil. Marília is younger, but she has more talent than Larissa. ;)

Bravo Irena!

Jul 18th, 2006, 08:19 PM
I was there today until 1630, just one more result:

Debbie Armstrong BT Samantha Murray 1-6, 6-4, 6-1

Also, they had just started a 3rd set in the Gibb v Reakes match, and Balducci was leading Bone 3-6, 6-3, 3-0. Jane O'Donoghue had won the first game of her match.

Yasmin Clarke picked up a knock in her match, wasn't sure if she was going to pull out of the doubles. Best match of the day was Craven V Scarfi with a riveting 1st set where Scarfi was a break up.

I agree Kiel, Marilia looked the more talented of the Camaras.

Laura lost to Debbie? I guess she hasn't competed for 1/2 year so it's excusable... when she graduates do you think she'll take her tennis more seriously? Or will she always play now and then in 10Ks?

Go Jane! 2 wins on the trot.
