Id be interested to know about some of these ladies personalities off court. I've heard that Justine Henin-Hardenne and Anastasia Myskina are some real meanies and unfriendly off court. Who else is not that nice?

we pulled up behind hingis at a hotel years ago before she 'retired' while she was getting out of a car. she wasn't rude or anything. she was obviously not wanting to attract a crowd though.

justine is extremely rude however!
i was at a tournament once and it was late in the afternoon, pretty much in between day and night sessions, so most people had left. justine had finished practicing and this one guy just wanted to take a quick picture with her and she acted all put off about it and told him to hurry.

she was really nice to me in sydney as well, she signed my giant tennis ball :)

Martina is awesome she gave away so much stuff when we were watching her on the practice courts in sydney. But she means what she says - she said no pictures and she wouldnt let anyone take a picture with her, probably because there were so many of us.

Nicole is actually very nice off-court. Conchita acts that way on and off the court. She's really a bitch. I still like her game but she definately has a pissy attitude. Justine isn't awful off-court but she can get moody. Dementieva is a sweetheart off-court. Myskina does have her ways though.

Yes, I wouldn't be too harsh on her either. At only 17 and so intense and highly motivated to do well, I can understand if she may have upset a few people along the way, with her words or actions. But she seems to have an xlnt stepdad/coach. I'm hoping we will see big improvements in her public relations and game in the next year..

Well if that's the case then you're asking the wrong group of people because none of us know their personalites off court when they are at home or hanging with friends. You have two types the people, ones who are actually good people, and ones who go out of their way to make people think they are good people. So where is that extremely rude?

1. She had the picture taken with him didn't she?

2. How did you know she didn't have to be somewhere at a certain time?

3. Did she ignore him and not have a picture taken with him?

4. Where was that extremely rude? What did you want her to do? Kiss his butt and take him out to dinner? She could have said "NO" like most other players do, but she didn't did she?

So ... once again I ask, where is that extremely rude?

I tell you what extremely rude is:

Sharapova, William Sisters, Hantuchova walking past all the kids at Autograph Island at Wimbledon and totally ignoring them! Roger Federer was amongst that lot walking past and he was the only one that came over and signed the autographs for the kids ..... oh and Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, the above lot just walked on by and didn't even acknowledge any of the fans! Now I personally think that is rude!

Yeah, Nastya offcourt is really a detestable person.

Read this (wtatour.com):
Winner of the Diamond Aces award in 2004 and again in 2005, Anastasia continues to demonstrate her commitment to the success of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and its tournaments across the globe. The Russian recognizes the importance of offcourt activities and exhibits a genuine enthusiasm for a variety of initiatives including media appearances, fan interaction, charity commitments and sponsor support.

Of course Anastasia isn't a nasty person off court. I had the experience of sitting next to her on a bench last year at Eastbourne. My friend and I were eating our lunch and she came and sat down and was reading a book! We spoke for about 5 mins, I asked her about her mother etc and we spoke about tennis. She's a lovely girl!

Same goes for JHH .. I mean the girl has just been chosen to be a representative of UNESCO ... if she were mean, would they chose her? Of course not!

Some of the posters on here are kids and have nothing better to do than to bash and judge players. Anyone would think that these kids know these players personally and have had personal experiences of players diissing them as friends, or not calling them when they said they would! What would they know? They've seen them on TV, they've seen them live at a match, but have they actually sat down and had a one-to-one personal conversation with them? Of course they haven't, so how can they judge if a player is mean or not? They can't, they just start these sort of threads to bash players. Example, one poster saying JHH is mean because she said to one of the posters friends to hurry up because he wanted a picture taken with her. What was wrong with that? She took the picture with him didn't she? See what I mean?

Take no notice of these children on here ... they do not have ANY experience of any of the players personally.

Get my drift? ;)

How do any of us really know what they are like off court? I tend to believe that most players who are really nice on court while under all that stress and pressure are probably nice at all times, but people who seem bitchy or mean on court might be more relaxed and nicer in real life

I doubt there's a mean bitch on tour, it's just what people put them into being stereotypical. Nicole was nice to me at AO, she finished a match, and being escorted into RLA by security guards. I asked her if she could sign my tennis ball, and after hearing the mean attitude people say she had, I thought she'd gobble me up, but nah, she was cool. She said my tennis ball had too many signatures, and wondered where she could sign it. :) But she still did. :)

I wouldn't say Myskina is mean but I will say she's a hypocrit. You can't say you hate the American way of life and then USE IT BETTER THAN ANY OF THE PLAYERS ON TOUR. In 2004 just before the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia Myskina made a trip to the very good and very rich private school of Germantown Academy. She talked to the children there and some of the alumni as well and got paid a hefty sum for doing the deed, 50,000 American dollars. It was smart indeed and it's a reason why Larry Brown has said that he would coach a Friends school or private school after the NBA. They would literally just give him a million for just laying back and coaching every year. In the end Myskina got paid more at Germantown Academy than at the Advanta Championships that week.

Umm...All the time. When Sharapova won Wimbledon she really went for saying it. Maybe hate was too far but she doesn't agree with the American culture. She would never say hate. I don't think femal tennis players are really themselves when they play especially the women because they are demanded more to put on an appearance than men because lets face it fans want women to look good and have a winning character (not necessarily that they have to win). Another words, they have to play like they are trying to get a high-class husband (the old amateur attitude of the 1900's). With the youth of these girls, that takes time to develop and most cases these girls don't want to. Steffi Graf was viewed negatively at first and now she is loved, the others like a above and the old ones didn't give a hoot. Martina.

My point is whether they are nice or not, I don't think they are real unless you seem them in private. I remember Andrea Jaeger was known as a bitch on and off the court but she gave presents to terminally ill children and eventually set up a camp for the terminally ill children.

I really haven't seen very many instances of players being mean other people. They may not want to sign autographs or take pictures on a particular day, but that could be for a bunch of reasons. They've got a lot on their mind, they're tired, etc etc. I can't say it's the right way to act. It seems silly to not take the two seconds to sign something when it could make a person's day (especially with the smaller kids), but that's just me. I've seen plenty of players deny autograph seekers, but they almost always do it politely or explain why. It could definitely be a daunting site to see 100 people with tennis balls in your face after you've just come off court exhausted from a practice.

That being said, Anastasia Rodionova is a complete twat. At the US Open a couple of years ago, she was unpleasant to about everyone I saw her interact with. She played a match in the US Open qualifying and won and then this little five year old girl asked her for an autograph. Literally the ONLY person asking for one. She just scowled at her and said "no" before bumping the girl out of her way (that part might have been unintentional though, although she didn't apologize) with her racket bag and walking past the door of the court.

She just scowled at her and said "no" before bumping the girl out of her way (that part might have been unintentional though, although she didn't apologize) with her racket bag and walking past the door of the court.

my impression formed over several years at the USO, is that Rodionova is a rare case of a tennis player who is just as mean and vicious off the court, as she is on it.

Are you sure that wasn't Maria? ;)

After she won Wimbledon in 2004, I saw her at La Costa. She was walking behind the courts, and a five year old boy walked up to her and asked for an autograph. She just stared at him and said, "I don't do those," and walked away. He was the only one around her at the time. Not sure where her posse of Daddy & Co. were.

In doha 2004, i once saw Maria sharapova spit on a little five year old GIRL (who happened to be crippled and BALD) after th girl asked for an autograph. She scowled at her, and let out a primal scream. Then Yuri who was next to her shouted Vamos with an aggressive frown, and the two stormed off. It was all very ODD. It's a true story.

on the opposite end, at Charleston one year, Petrova had just lost a match to Suarez, and she stormed off the court, away from everyone towards the forest to skulk. There was this 7 or 8-year girl who had been watching the match and she took off running after Nadya as fast as her legs could carry her. Nadya was just standing out there by herself pacing around angrily, and this little kid came running up to her, and i thought, oh no, she's going to yell at this poor kid in her moment of frustration. But instead they were talking there for about half a minute. And then the kid came running back to her dad grinning from ear to ear and when Nadya headed into the clubhouse a couple minutes later she had a smile on her face too.

AS most of you know, Woody Allen made a movie called "Match Point" about an ex male tennis player who winds up murdering his mistress, etc.

So that's the connection with tennis.

Anyway, Woody likes to play jazz music with an amateur band on the side, just for fun. For years he played in a small restaurant in lower Manhattan. Now, everybody knows Woody does not sign autographs while he is in that restaurant. I had heard that years before I ever went there, but my friends and I did go there one year in the 90s, just to see him play.

In between the first and second sets, Woody was standing on stage talking to the other band members or other people, I can't remember who, and a little kid about six or seven years old, walks up and holds out a autograph pad. Woody ignored the kid and the kid just stood there for a very long time.

Now, I doubt that this little six year old could have been a big Woody Allen fan and I know damn well the kid didn't go to this restaurant on his own. His parents or somebody else sent him up there, probably figuring that while Woody would turn down an adult, he won't say no to a little kid. He did.

That's a true story, which I witnessed for myself.

I have heard about athletes refusing to sign autographs because they have watched some kids get the autogrph and immediately turn it over to an adult, who slips it into a clear plastic cover. You know that autograph is going to wind up for sale somewhere.

But I have attended literally dozens of tennis tournaments and have to say most players sign autographs when it is convenient for them. Sometimes they are in a hurry or even in a very bad mood and don't feel like it, but I have not seen any instances that I can remember where people just flat out refused for no reason.

She never said she didn't like the american culture.

Non elle aime la culture Américaine mais dans un tennis Magazine de 2004 ou 2005 où L'interviewée du mois était Myskina elle disait que si elle pouvait "elle n'y mettrait jamais les pieds".

whenever i met Conchita she was so so nice.

at Roland Garros 2004 she signed loads of autographs after practise session, signed more after losing her match at Roland Garros 2004. chatted with fans, one guy asked if he could give her a kiss she said yes and he gave her a kiss on both cheeks.

Conchi is shy and that shouldnt be confused with beeen mean or rude.
Tennis world is not the same without the great CONCHI!

Absolutely. At WTA-Cinci last year, I never once saw a player refuse to sign an autograph around the practice courts or after a match win, and some of them were mobbed by fans. (I spent a lot of time watching player-fan interactions, too.)

At ATP-Cinci, it was much the same. I went to that tournament eight times, and the only person I saw be an ass to fans was Jimmy Buffett, who was attending some of the matches.
