Who gives a damn about what you think, when you look as a person's tennis career you count all thier achievements not just the singles. What Venus and Serena have accomplished at Wimbledon is amazing none of the player from thier generation has this rich history. They are winners and finalist in all of Wimbledon's catagories.

Tell me something: Why doesn't my "point" matter?

Because I don't live in your jaded state of nostalgia that doesn't allow you to think of the Williams sisters in any light other than one of pure perfection? (I'll give you a second to digest that).

I'm sorry that I don't see those runner up trophies and mixed doubles titles, and get all giddy like you do. I'd much rather prefer them holding the singles title.

I'm sure it's much easier to watch tennis when you can see Venus lose (painfully) in the third round of singles and still say "Oh well her streak is still alive because she reached the mixed final." Gotta hold out some hope, right???

I'd like to think (in fact I do think) that I'm much more evolved than that. But be my guest. Carry on.

How is it Nostalgia if Venus just played in the Final today   Venus and Bob making the finals was a joy to watch they were fun on the court and had a good time. So if we are happy for her success there, we are happy. if you don't care for doubles that's your buisness b/c Venus and Bob's matches were more exciting than most of the boring matches played in the singles. Sports is about fun and excitement and Venus and Bob gave us that this week. And Venus made it to another Final you can't take that away from her.

The fact that you ask why your opinion doesn't matter is kind of tragic ... ok but I'll play along tonight....Your opinion doesn't matter because you aren't the one out there playing...clearly those doubles titles and space holders (as you called them) mean something to Venus and Serena or else they wouldn't be entering into the tournaments and spending the time on the court to get them. Why don't you digest that.

As far as that dribble about what you prefer....good for you but so what? I don't see anyone in this thread saying you should feel one way or the other. If feeling like people should be doom and gloom because Venus didn't live up to your or their expectations is the example of being evolved then evolution is certainly overrated.

No one is taking today away from Venus. Congratulations to her on making a mixed final. But ask Venus herself, and she'd say she'd MUCH rather have been on Center Court contesting for the singles title again. not on Court 1 losing to two players who are nowhere on her radar anymore (although Zvonereva seems to be ascending).

All I'm saying is that these mixed and doubles titles are nice, they pad her resume. But honestly, are u going to say that a "title is a title"? Bull.

It's a tad ironic. Because you shifted the argument from being one of facts and stats to being one of sentiment. Congratulations on having "exciting" mixed doubles matches Venus. The hall of fame awaits you on that alone.....

Again if the mixed doubles meant nothing to Venus than she had no business entering it. The mixed doubles means something to Venus. Sure she wanted to defend, but winning the mixed doubles title is also one of her goals because she wants to have a grand slam in singles, doubles, and mixed. So far she is only missing four slam trophies and she's trying to get them now.
So it means something to Venus, you may not care for doubles but she does so in the end your views mean nada.

No one in here said that Venus would rather have a doubles title over a singles title?? Still had she won today she would've appreciated the win and felt it a major accomplishment so why wouldn't she look at it as keeping a streak a live? I mean was she or wasn't she playing on one of the two final days at Wimbledon?

I won't even argue that point. You are correct. My view means nothing in the scope of things! but hell, I sure get a kick out off expressing them and getting reactions like I did tonight.

All I'm saying is that the Williams are (and have always been) about results. As in titles. Namely singles titles. So the idea of this streak may be a "novel" one, but it really just doesn't encompass the attitude I think either Williams sister has about tennis.

Itīs orange and apples, the streak is related to singles since 2000, if it makes you feel better fine milk around it, but the fact that the streak where a Williams sister was in the singles final is over.

The Martina Hingis comment about the Australian Open was made in a sarcastic way obviosly.

Yeah it's dissapointing that they aren't DOMINATING this event in singles like all of their fans would like to see. Injuries happen, life happens, and while that does not excuse their lack-luster singles results as of late, but all I was doing was congratulating Venus on at least getting to another Championship Weekend.

And 50, you say that dubs and singles don't matter as much, then WHY would Navy be on court in her LATE 40s trying to break the overall Wimbledon title record of 20. If singles was all that mattered, she could be resting WELL on her laurels, becuase unless Vee and Ree play into their 30s, NO ONE is gonna come CLOSE to Navy's 9 singles plates.

For players, it's all about PLAYING. Singles, dubs, mixed, WHATEVER! I'm sure Venus would have loved to have beaten Justine today, hell, I'm sure she would have loved to have won her mixed match today, but it is AMAZING that over the past 9 years, only 1 Wimbledon has taken place where a Williams wasn't playing on the last weekend, and that's amazing!
