Yeah, it was a good match. Great play from all four players, but VeeBob just too good.

Assuming that they play Mirnyi and Zheng is the SF, this will likely be the toughest match-up.

I hope they take the title and team up again for the U.S. Open.

It was a good match.

Venus got a shot in the ribs by Paes  But she laughed it off :)

Bob was the best player on court. They all played well. Some of Venus' returns were really good especially the one she hit so hard down the middle that looked like it went through Paes' rackety

She got broken once, but they broke Stosur straight away. They broke Stosur again before Bob served it out!!!

They now play Zheng and Max, who played really well today.

Good luck Venus & Bob

Becuase we are talking about Venus, who is going for a mixed doubles crown to go with her three singles and two ladies doubles crowns.

:) Ye guys are in for a treat if ye are gonna watch it. I am eternally greateful to the BBC for showing it live :worship: Venus really picked up her play as the match went on, especially in the first set tiebreaker she played a crucial role on getting the setpoints. In the second it was pretty much all about Bob, he played unbelievable tennis and he set up the breakpoints for Venus on Stosur's serve at 4-3. Vee missed the first one coz Paes had great net coverage but she unleashed an outrageous return winner on the second bp away from him. I mean Sam and Leander played superbly but it says a lot for Vee and Bob that they were able to beat them in straights ;) Overall, just a really entertaining match full of high quality tennis. I was glad to be able to banish away the horrid memories of seeing a gutted Venus leave the same court last saturday and replace them today with a giggling Venus. Herself and Bob sure like having a right old natter at the change of ends

YAY!!! Congrats to Vee/Bob!!! I think they did an excellent job! Sam was playing really well (love u sam!!!) and leander was awesome at net! But in the end it was Bob's great reactions and Venus' fantabulous returns/groundstrokes that lifted the win!!!

Up next Mirnyi/Zheng, the number 2 seed. It's getting tougher and tougher for Vee/Bob but they will prevail!! Good luck VeeBOB!!! ^-^

*Thanks to StarSports for featuring the match!! Yay!!! :D

I am wishing that these mixed matches are going to help Venus' singles. It seems like her serving and returning are picking up. Maybe she can realize that she needs to be at the net and how to get up there and be effective. Doubles requires great accuracy, so maybe the unforced errors Venus will won down with all these matches that she is playing. Even though she isn't in the singles, she is still at Wimbledon improving her game through match play.

she is still winning most of her rallies from the baseline and relying on blistering groundies. her serve is holding up fine, but she isn't really showing impressive form in her volleys.

she'll get there though and i agree that this will only help her singles!

For those who saw the match what match do you guys think was better.

you mean comparing this match to the one they played earlier today?

I didn't see the first match but considering that Vee and Bob started out sluggish and fell 2-5 behind in the first set, I would say they definitely played better against Paes/Stosur ;) I mean Paes/Stosur were playing exceptional tennis so the match was of the highest quality. Funnily enough, Vee's volleys are by far the weakest part of her game at the moment, she's just not getting anything on them. still, everything else was firing for her today. only slight problem I see with Vee and Bob is , despite the two nattering to each other like there is no tomorrow, they seem to lack strategic communication on the court. I mean today Bob ran unnessessarily to quite a few balls that Vee was lining up to play.I guess though this is to be expected for a while considering it is their first tournament together :)

I know it's tough but we should be happy that at least we know Vee is still having fun on the tennis court. She just had a bad day at the office last Saturday. Vee would be in the doghouse alright maybe if she had ran off home right after crashing out to go to some party:lol: but she didn't. At least we know she is serious about her tennis and her continued participation in the mixed doubles at least puts paid to those tiresome people who go on that Vee has no interest/motivation/desire for the game any more :)

After Vee was hit by the ball i think she completley uped her intensity, she started grunting really loud and fist pumping, her returning was brilliant, good exciting match, i think they will beat Mirnyi and Zheng because of Zhengs serve, esp if they return like they did today, Zhengs second serve will be demolished, good luck to them anyway :)

Venus had on the same dress that she wore during singles, but today she had on socks that were pulled up to her mid-calf. Her socks were higher than Bob and they weren't even (reminded me of Rusedski). It was distracting me the whole match because it looked very un-Venus. Plus she was wearing an eerie looking silver skull necklace. I must say that Mattek wore the socks better than Venus. I didn't like the socks with the dress at all. Loved both matches though

Max has a huge serve I hope Bob and Vee serve well tomorrow cause they might not get many looks on his serve. But Zheng can be broken easily.

maybe there was a statement in that necklace. if it was over the rbk on her dress, maybe she was showing how unhappy she is with them.

Definatley, the weak link out there will be Zheng because of her serve, Mirnyi will need to be on fire at the net to quell the returns if they are to have a chance

Bob's blog

This is Bob. It's 8 o'clock here in London and I just rolled in the door. My tennis bag is stuffed. I brought home 5 big bottles of water and 4 official Wimbledon towels. These towels (see photo below) have been a long tradition at Wimbledon and players make a habit of stealing as many as they can get their hands on. They make great gifts.

For every match there are two new towels on your chair. When the match finishes, the ball boys try to snatch them from you, but if you shove them deep in your bag and run, they're yours. I played two mixed doubles matches today... I was two for two with the matches, but more importantly, I was 4 for 4 with the towels.

Venus and I had some good wins today against some tough teams. We were down a break in both matches but were able to battle back and win in straight sets. In our second match against Leander Paes and Samantha Stosur, we were scheduled to play at 5:15 pm on court 2. At 5:15, three of us were suited up and ready to go but Stosur was nowhere to be found. She was back at her house relaxing. I guess she thought she was finished for the day. At 6 o'clock, Venus and I were wondering why we didn't get a default. The WTA tour claimed responsibility for not informing Stosur and said she wasn't to blame. The situation was a little frustrating but it felt good to earn the victory the old fashioned way.

While I was at the courts grinding it out, Mike was enjoying his day off in the city. He and Jenn shopped around a little, saw Pirates of the Caribbean, and then watched the end of my match on the BBC. Mike and I always root for each other to win mixed matches. We made a pact long ago that every dime we make on or off the court, we would share. So basically, this week, I'm working overtime for Mike's lazy ass.

Mike and I don't only share money. We also share our houses, cars, clothes, and Sports Illustrated once wrote that we even share the same toothbrush. Untrue... that's a nasty rumor. Thanks Dad! Speaking of my Dad, he's back home in Camarillo, CA with my mom, watching our matches on the internet. My parents always wake up at the crack of dawn and follow the live scoring from their computer. I can't wait for them pick us up at the airport in L.A. and take us to get some good Mexican food. England is definitely not known for it's cuisine and I'm starting to crave a chile verde burrito from our local spot, Somis Market.

It's the semis of Wimbledon tomorrow. I think I can hold off on that burrito for a couple more days. This is what we play for.

Match Reports

Williams/Bryan Fly Through

Thursday, 6 July, 2006

While Justin Henin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauresmo clinched their places in the ladies’ singles final, the woman whose crown they are aiming to take completed her very own personal victory by making it to the last four of the mixed doubles for the first time.

Venus Williams, together with fellow American partner Bob Bryan, defeated the fourth seeds Leander Paes and Samantha Stosur 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in 66 minutes.

Seeing as both partnerships were competing in their second match of the day, you could forgive them if they looked a little tired. Instead, the players, especially Williams, delighted the No.2 Court crowd with a highly-competitive, fired-up and focused display.

With only a few points separating the players at the end of the first set, a tie-break was needed to decide the score. At this point it was the unseeded American duo appeared the hungrier for victory, prevailing 7-3 in the tie-break after Bryan continued his excellent serving and Williams sent a couple of unstoppable returns at the feet of Indian doubles specialist Leander Paes.

Sensing victory was near, Williams and Bryan then upped their game to another level. Williams unusually decided to change tactics and stay at the baseline in a few of the rallies, frequently passing her bewildered rivals with top class shots into the tramlines.

With Bryan’s expertise at the net, the duo are forming a formidable and clever partnership that puts them in with a good chance of lifting the mixed doubles trophy on Sunday. They outwitted their opponents at the net in the fourth game to achieve a crucial break of serve to give them the advantage in the set. The number two seeds could not find a way back into the game, eventually bowing out 6-3.

Williams and Bryan will play the second seeds Max Miryni and Jie Zheng in the quarter-finals.
