are the other top russian players available but not selected? or are they unavailable? petrova probably still injured, but did sharapova, kuznetsova, myskina, safina, kirilenko make themselves unavailable or were they not selected?

LenaD will save Russia again, winning both her singles and Sprem is the only hope for Croatia to beat one of the others and then Lisjak would need to pull an upset, even then they would not be favoured in the doubles, but good look Lena and Russia

Sprem sidelined with elbow injury

A right elbow injury to Karolina Sprem has forced Croatian captain Goran Prpic to start the tie against Russia without his best player. Saturday’s opening match will be Ivana Lisjak against 19-year old prospect Anna Chakvetadze, followed by Elena Dementieva, the only one of Russia’s four Top 10 players in the team, against Sanja Ancic, the 17-year-old younger sister of Croatia's Davis Cup star "Super Mario" Ancic.

Mighty Russia, winner for the last two years of Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, was forced into a playoff match for a place in the World Group in 2007 after losing its quarterfinal to a full-strength Belgium, with both Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters in the team. The Russian team came to Umag a full week ahead of the tie against Croatia with Elena Dementieva as a leading force. The most experienced player of the tie enjoyed a week of preparations for the upcoming match.

Russians "at home" in Umag

"We received a very warm welcome here in Umag. It was very difficult to practice in the heat and coming from grass courts at Wimbledon to clay here in Umag didn't make it any easier. But we all feel very well on this court,” said Dementieva.

Russian captain Shamil Tarpishev has a long lasting relationship with Croatia and it feels almost like home here.
"I was here in 1990 when Umag hosted an ATP event for the first time. It is a very nice place where I have lot of friends, " Tarpishev said.

But he didn't come here just to enjoy himself, he has a job to do. How tough this job will be, remains to be seen. Tarpishev didn't seem surprised when the Croatian nominations were announced.

"I am always concentrated only on my players. I don't look to the other side of the net. I know that we will have to play good tennis to beat Croatia and that is what we came here for."

Debut for Chakvetadze

Elena Dementieva was a sure pick for the singles and between the other three Tarpishev chose 19-year-old debutante Anna Chakvetadze.

"It wasn't just the quality of tennis I was looking for. It was concentration and other things during practice that made me pick Chakvetadze."

Even though she has never played for her country before in Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, the young prospect doesn't seem to be overrawed.

"I don't feel the pressure. We have a great team. Maybe I will feel the pressure after but for the moment I don't feel any,” Chakvetadze said with a big smile on her face.

Croatians in good spirits despite Sprem absence

The home side was in good spirits also, even though Goran Prpic had to leave Karolina Sprem out of the nominations:
"We all hope that she will be able to play on Sunday."

Sprem came to Umag with the pain in her right elbow:
"I started to feel pain during Wimbledon in the match against Nicole Vaidisova but I didn't want to retire. The pain comes when I have to serve. During the last couple of days I was feeling much better but it's still sore. I think there is more than 50 % chance that I will play on Sunday," Sprem said.

The Croatians tried everything to get their best player ready for the tie. They even called a Slovenian expert in alternative medicine.

"It is very difficult to explain what he is doing during the therapy. You have to see it to understand it but it helps," Sprem said.

Lisjak and Ancic ready

So Prpic didn't have too much choice left. Ivana Lisjak will play as Croatia's number one just one tie after she made her debut against Argentina. She is looking much more confident than three months ago.

"Now it's much easier to prepare. If I will play my best tennis, I know I can beat Chakvetadze."

Sanja Ancic will make her first Fed Cup appearance. She was in the team against Argentina but didn't get a chance to play.

"I would be much happier if Karolina would be able to play. I will try doing my best that is all I can promise."

The World Group play-off tie gets underway at ITC Stella Maris in Umag on Saturday with the official opening ceremony at 1545 local time.
