Serena Williams to play here
BY DUSTIN DOW | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Serena Williams, a seven-time grand slam winner, has accepted a wild card into the field for July’s Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open.

This will be Williams first tournament since January’s Australian Open. Williams has been sidelined by injuries since then.

“I have decided to return to competitive tennis at Cincinnati’s Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, the week of July 17,” Williams said in a statement.

“Lately, I have been working very hard on making my knee stronger, and that work is progressing well. Barring any setbacks, it is my hope that I will be able to rejoin the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour at Cincinnati.”

Williams’ current ranking is 104.

:haha: at using "Cincinnati’s Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open" and "Sony Ericsson WTA Tour" as a direct quote from Serena.. can you imagine her actually saying it in full :o

Hope she will actually come back and is not just giving false hope

awsome that she will be back.. not to sound negative but is it too early? she is not even close to look as fit as she did when she was the real serena.. it was said to see her movement and groundstrokes in australia.. i want serena to comeback and just be amazing.. i think she has the recent years palyed when she probably should be home and practise

but i hope im wrong.. the most important thing after all is that she is back:D the wta tour hasnt been the same without her

Is the wildcard for qualifying or for the main draw?

Anyhow, I just hope she comes back healthy and fit, whenever she chooses to return. It's no fun watching her play, unless she's firing on all cylinders.

the armpit of the midwest Cincinnati.

:o

This is good news. I'm not a Serena fan but this tournament needs a top player to get the fans in.:worship:

It has been a Tier 3 but I believe this year it is Tier 2. I was there last year and enjoyed it very much, but then, I'm a real tennis fan. The seats were empty most of the time, even for the finals. If Serena plays, a lot more people will buy tickets and this will be a good thing.:) Last year they literally couldn't give tickets away.

Good for Western and Southern for sticking with the women. They didn't have to continue to sponsor it. The men bring in boatloads of fans. I just hope Serena shows up.

I told you the tournament organizers would offer her a WC without Serena having to even ask.

Jun 14th, 2006, 09:20 PM
She should play the qualies. After all, Agassi played challengers when he was coming back from his down period.

:yeah: Serena.. good luck!

Jun 14th, 2006, 09:23 PM
No, I think playing qualies would be bad. I don't think she should play a lot of matches staright away and injure herself...

sfselesfan
Jun 14th, 2006, 09:33 PM
Any seeded player who has to play her in the first couple of rounds is gunna be like "F*CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I have a feeling this comeback will be the real deal. No more p*ssy-footin' around for Rena. I wish Venus would take Serena's lead and get some outside coaching. I think players generally benefit from working with different coaches. Harold Solomon would be a nice fit with the sisters.

I hope this is not too soon.

Are the injuries healed?
Has she been training?
Is she fit?

She must be healthy and fit to be anything like the old Serena.

Serena won't play unless she's ready.

Serena won't play unless she's ready.

Agreed. I think she got burned too much last year for her half-assed attempt at a comeback. I think she's more serious this time around. Otherwise she would not be training at Nick's academy.
