Hopman Cup coup as Venus commits to playing in Perth

DAVE HUGHES

Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will partner Taylor Dent in the US pair to defend the Hyundai Hopman Cup title next summer.

Williams, who last year beat Lindsay Davenport 4-6 7-6 9-7 in Wimbledon's longest women's final, will follow sister Serena, who won the Perth mixed teams event with James Blake in 2002-03.

Fittingly, she will be the 19th player to have held the world No. 1 ranking to play in the Hopman Cup, in the tournament's 19th year.

"That's a pretty good record for hallmark players," declared tournament director Paul McNamee from Germany yesterday.

An exciting Monday afternoon in Kaiserslautern watching the Socceroos beat Japan became even better when Williams' agent, Carlos Fleming, contacted McNamee to confirm that a proposal put to Venus during the French Open had paid off.

"Up to now she's usually spent Hopman Cup week in Hong Kong but she's never won the Australian Open and she wants to make some changes in her preparation," said a delighted McNamee.

"I did, of course, point out to her that her sister won in Melbourne in 2003 straight after playing in Perth."

When the older of the Williams sisters indicated her willingness to come to Perth for the first time, McNamee had little hesitation departing from the tournament tradition of inviting back the pair who won the previous year. Lisa Raymond partnered Dent to the title last January but a drawcard as big as multiple Wimbledon and US Open champion Williams could not be overlooked - particularly after last year's lacklustre field.

Williams has won Wimbledon three times and the US Open twice and was the gold medallist in the singles at the Sydney Olympics.

She has contested the final of all four grand slam tournaments at least once, with her sister denying her a full house of major championships with wins at the French Open in 2002 and the Australian Open in 2003.

She has won 33 WTA Tour titles, amassed more than $16 million in prize money and holds bragging rights to the fastest serve recorded in a women's event when she unleashed a 205kmh thunderbolt at Mary Pierce in Zurich in 1998.

Injury has hindered Williams' bid to reclaim the No. 1 ranking she last held in 2002. After a first-round loss in the Australian Open, she was out of action until May. She reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, losing in three sets to Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova.

"Venus has got her head down and she's working her way back. The hunger is still there and the fact she's making changes and coming to play in Perth indicates she's dinkum about having a crack at the Australian Open," said McNamee.

The Hopman Cup starts December 29.

This is what I want to see from Venus. I never really though she prepared herself well at the Australian Open this whole decade until I read this. This will probably be her best chance at this slam now. I wish her well.

Oh wow.
Yeah, like America i guess, Australian's that live in the outback have much stonger accents than people who live in the city. Some are so strong that even other Australian's have trouble understanding what they are saying haha.. They tend to use words such as, cobber, bloke.. stuff like that. And when they speak to women, they will say "G'day love!"

It's quiet amusing sometimes :p

Lisa lost almost all of her singles matches and the US still won the Hopman Cup. Lisa has another agenda on her plate in Australia next year. She's an Australian mixed doubles slam away from having the grand slam in mixed.

Phil Dent (born February 14, 1950 in Sydney) is a former professional tennis player from Australia, who reached his highest singles ranking on January 16, 1978, when he became the number 19 of the world.

Dent was the men's singles runner-up at the Australian Open in 1974 and a men's doubles champion at the Australian Open in 1975. During his career, he won three top-level singles titles and 24 doubles titles. His son Taylor Dent became a professional tennis player, and is competing for the United States.

Great decision. It will be great prep for the AO!! :worship: cant wait to see you play in the Hopman Cup.

My only wish is that she plays with Roddick or Blake  then it would be perfect! :worship:

But I think Dent will be good too, beacuse he is a big server and has great volleys. They should be great in the doubles section!

Another encouraging sign from Venus. She's taking this next year seriously, since returning back to the tour after her elbow injury.

She comes plays two clay events, remaining in Europe and working with an additional coach, who is a clay court specialists to prepare for French; gets good results despite the long layoff (2 QFs and SF); next year, she does the same thing hopefully and starts working earlier with her new clay court coach and hopefully she will get pass the QF at RG for the first time since 2002!

returns to her regular regime in preparation for Wimbledon--no need to tweak anything here since she has the most impressive record on tour. hopefully, she's getting her serve back into a groove. remember she never faced a break point throughout the entire QF match with Mary, who is a great returner.

no news on U.S. Open, but would be great to see her return to the schedule that won her two titles and two finals.

changes her prep for Australian Open, getting down under early and playing an event that will give her some match play and doubles practice (head to the net, Vee).

Hope that it all pays big dividends. With all the injuries that have disrupted her play, she has hung in there, taking her losses, stayed focused and hopefully getting back to her form that she displayed at Wimbledon 2003 before succumbing to the ab injury.

Great News!

While it's encouraging to hear of Venus' interest in playing Hopman Cup, I'd think Paul McNamee would know better than to build his dreams on her appearing. Not to mention that Lisa Raymond gets overlooked again for a Williams, when they are not reliable people at all.

I just hope this pans out and she does appear. It was be just tragic if Lisa got dumped again like this. While I agree that Venus is the better and bigger draw, she's just not dependable.

Please, Venus. Please don't disappoint these people.

Me too. This is great for tennis, Venus and her fans. I can't wait to see it even though partnering with Blake or Roddick would have been a lot more exciting.

It's about time that Venus is finally making a commitment to have a decent warm-up going into AO. Given her talent, that's a Slam she should have already won at least two times. It's a shame that all those years she has had this mindset that she was not expected to be in tennis-form until March, especially when she was in school, so it didn't seem like a big deal to her that she lost early. Hopefully, this decision to play in Hopman Cup will pay off for her in 2007, as it did for Serena in 2003.

Lisa didnt win one singles match last year, the US only won because it was the weakest field ever, Venus deserves a place much more than she does.

I wish they replaced Dent too, he is so boring. Blake would have been much better, and he'll be the US #1 by then too, i would expect.

Venus needs this sort of match play right before the Australain Open and now I have a reason to follow the tournament again because no offense, the tournament director was right when he said the field last year was lackluster.

Speaking of Taylor Dent, his father lost to either John McEnroe or Jimmy Connors in the 1977 AO final. His mother was also an accomplished American doubles player.
