let's say, the usual girls "on top". Venus: :yeah: Ivanovic  K-Lina  And a special  to Justine who, with her height serves, serves at an amazing speed

Any names surprise you? i never saw Lisjak play  i always thought she was quite "fragile" but she seems to have quit a big serve

yeah, our commentators just noticced she had clocked the fastest serve and then she lsiot the point, but still, nice stat ;)

Justine must have hit hers in the finals i think, I didn't notice it, but she didn't go above 190 untill the semifinals

Average serve speeds are much more interesting. They really should make the statistics gathering and presentation much more advanced.

This is very interesting :D:

Completely compliant with the "don't lose your energy too much in the first rounds strategy".

Although Venus hit the fastest serve at RG, she "only" won 63% on her first serve!
I guess placement is as important as speed...

Obviously a misprint as both Justine and Sveta played the same amount of matches.

Venus' serve.
:p

Can she catch a break?
Guess not!

Funny that when she wasn't popping these kind
of numbers all anyone could say is where is the power?

She pops it, now, where is the point?

If Roddick can throw bombs on clay and still lose
the points, it's no different for Venus.

Besides, throwing that on grass would and
most likely will pay more dividends for both.

At the very least, Venus shows she can still throw the power.
And more exciting, coming off the elbow injury, her power is
coming back around and her consistency will get there as well.

Vee lost that point when she hit that serve against Vaidisova :tape:she won't at Wimbledon. at best, she'll get a weak reply that will allow her to take flight with her Venus gave it to tennis "swing volley."

I guess placement is as important as speed...in general, this is true, but more so on clay!

On grass, speed is very important and that is why Roddick and other big servers have consistently gotten to the final at Wimbledon on the men's side and Venus gets there regularly as well on the women's side (5 out 6 times she's played ;) )

Justine won't have that percentage on grass; I can assure you! And Venus won't have that winning percentage on grass with serve speeds of 123 mph.

I guess placement is as important as speed...If you look at the list, it seems that both speed and placement are important.

6 out of 8 of the RG QF are in the top twenty for both serve speed and percentage won on serve, though the six are different.

five of the top 8 were in both categories: Venus, Henin, Kim, Groenfield, Nicole--indicating that both speed and placement are important, even for clay; three of the four semi-finalists were in top 20 of both categories.

Hingis is in the top 20 for percentage won, but not for speed and Kutznetsova is in for speed and not percentage won.

Good to see Venus can still hit those 120 bombs. She'll need them at Wimbledon ;)

So on average Justine has a faster serve than Venus (in this tourney)!

I was thinking the same, the chances vee losing to someone like Vaidisova on grass aswell i think are slim if she serves big

Well both justine and Venus lack variation on serve a lot I think..Justine and Venushas got really predictable 2nd serves..I was actually surprised to see Juju varied it a bit in final on ad side throwing in out wide kickers at times..On ad side her 1st serves are mostly body or down T so is true for venus major part of her 1st serves go to to forehand side...That was one of major reason of loss to pironkova..Really predictable serve..Lil variation..Justine can hit T at times from deuce side but she misses them quite a few times before making them..I think its hard to serve hard or place em well but must be harder to do both simultaneously...Roddick or Ljubo can serve any side of court hard consistently...Davenport should hav been able to beef up her serve actually..With her placement and added speed she would have become next to impossible to break...Anyways lets hope Justine and Vee both start having more variation in their serves...
