NEW YORK - A singer whose songs have topped the Billboard dance chart was attacked by a group yelling anti-gay slurs, and four people were arrested on hate-crime charges, police and his publicist said.

Kevin Aviance, 38, underwent surgery for a broken jaw after the attack Saturday, said his publicist, Len Evans. Police said the singer, whose song "Alive" hit the top of the chart in 2002, was in stable condition.

A group of six or seven men attacked Aviance early Saturday, and passers-by did not stop to help as they threw objects at him, Evans said.

Four people were arrested on charges of first-degree assault as a hate crime, police said. They were identified as Jarell Sears and Akino George, both 20; Gregory Archie, 18; and Gerard Johnson, 16.

Aviance performs in drag but was "dressed like a boy" when he was attacked, Evans said. He had planned to take part in next week's Gay Pride parade and festivities, but will now be unable to perform, the publicist said.

Other popular songs by the singer have included "Give It

I have met Kevin on many occasions...as i am sure many gay club goers have. He is one of the most popular and fiercest performers from the past 20 years. Kevin also created one of the most popular vogue house in dc HOUSE OF AVIANCE.
This made the front page of of yahoo.com. I am heart broken that this has happened. This goes happins on a daily basis...i know i can;t even walk outside of my hosue holding my boyfriends hand without causing a stir. Quite sad really that as a firstclass citizen of the united states i still have to live in fear. This shit must stop or somthing is going to seriously happin. Then we have fuckin George Bush out there only making things worse. He offers no support whatsoever. I thing its time for a million man/woman march...things are about ready to boil over.

It's really sad that in this day and age, in a country that considers itself the best in the world, a certain group of people can still be considered second class citizens. When the government tells the country that gays are second class citizens, they can hardly be surprised to see attacks like this happening. Surely the government wouldn't condone this attack but then they're saying that only the government can pick and choose which rights they can take away from gays. It's just really sad that this is the state of the country right now.

This is awful. I'm shocked that this could happen to a homosexual in NYC which is suppose to be one of the most tolerant of cities in America after San Fran of course. Kevin Aviance is a role model for the gay community but especially the black gay community. The black gay community who has been told time and time again that they can't do this or shouldn't do that. I want to see a picture of these kids. I have a feeling this could be an internal issue for a group of people.

He is dance artist ( with atleast 7 top 40 dance hits inlcuding two #1s ) and performance artist. I would say drag queen..but that would not justify Kevin originality. He always does his "shows" bald..without a wig ;) I can't seem to post a pic...maybe someone else can. You can see pics of him by typing in his name at GOOGLE.COM. People these days.. it's ridiculous. I just don't see how anyone could hate a "certain" group of people. People are people, they have feelings, lives, in Kevin's case, nerves throughout their body, and yet people treat other humans as if they were nothing more than a rabied animal. IT ANGERS ME SO MUCH :shout:

New York City) Openly gay singer Kevin Aviance was listed in stable condition Sunday at New York's Beth Israel Hospital following what police are calling a vicious homophobic attack Saturday in the East Village.

Four men were later arrested on charges of assault as a hate crime. At least two others remain at large.

Aviance, 38, whose songs have topped the Billboard dance chart, was attacked as he walked home from the Club Phoenix where he had met friends for a drink.

Police said that the attackers yelled anti-gay slurs as they beat him.

Aviance managed to walk the short distance to hospital. He underwent surgery for a broken jaw on Saturday. His his publicist, Len Evans, said that Aviance's jaw is wired shut and he will not be able to perform in the upcoming gay-pride parade.

Evans said that while Aviance was being attacked people just passed by ignoring the bashing. Aviance performs in drag but Evans said he was ''dressed like a boy'' when he was attacked.

Aviance's song ''Alive'' hit the top of the chart in 2002. Other popular songs by the singer have included ''Give It Up,'' released in 2004, and ''Din Da Da,'' which topped the Billboard dance chart in 1997.

Police identified the four men arrested as Jarell Sears and Akino George, both 20; Gregory Archie, 18; and Gerard Johnson, 16.

Another horrible real life illustration as to why gay people must continue to fight loudly for equal rights recognition....

Only until same sex relationships etc are viewed as equal under law will this behaviour begin to cease. Until then such behaviour must be openly and loudly condemned.

The "pigs" (mostly youths) who attacked Kevin Aviance do so because he is viewed as a second rate citizen...it fuels the behaviour...and somehow provides them with a justification.

The parents of the youths should be absolutely ashamed of themselves as well...and should be publically named also....such behaviour is learned and cyclical!

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Gay performance artist Kevin Aviance was released from the hospital on Monday after suffering a beating that rights advocates said was a reminder of the hate crimes gays still face, even in New York City.

"Kevin is in a lot of pain, mentally and physically. He faces a long road to recovery," his lawyer, Jay Sanchez, said after Aviance was wheeled out of the hospital, his jaw wired shut and his leg in a brace.

"We all know it's happening out there all the time," Sanchez said of violence against gays.

Aviance could not speak for himself because of his injuries but he formed the words "thank you" with his lips to the media. He wore large sunglasses and a rainbow-colored sleeve.

Four males aged 16 to 20 have been arrested on suspicion of hate crime assault, in which the chart-topping singer and so-called "underground freak" performing artist was attacked upon walking home from a bar early on Saturday morning.

They yelled "kill the ******" and other epithets during the beating, said Len Evans, Aviance's publicist.

New York police have reported 22 anti-gay bias crimes so far this year compared to 17 for the same date a year ago.

Gay sources said it was particularly shocking that the attack occurred in the East Village -- one of the most gay-friendly neighborhoods in generally tolerant New York.

Aviance, with three Billboard number one dance music singles to his credit as a vocalist, was described by Evans as "Missy Elliott meets Grace Jones." The artist also lists Boy George and David Bowie as his influences.

Now he will have his jaw wired shut for two and a half weeks, at the height of Gay Pride Month. He still hopes to participate in the Gay Pride Parade on June 25.

"He said it feels like someone pulled your soul out," Evans said. "This was his month to shine. He made people feel proud to be gay, to walk the streets and to feel comfortable in their own skin. That was taken away from him."

The executive director of the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project said gays were particularly vulnerable during Gay Pride Month when "we are so visible as a community, which can fuel the ire of those folks that hate us."

At roughly the same time as Aviance was beaten, three gay men were attacked by seven or eight men in the working-class neighborhood of Astoria, Queens, Patton said.

I think he can still make people feel proud about themselves and he need to use that experience as a way to really put forth the violence toward gays, physical in this case, but most of the time psychological. I really hope he can turn this situation around, as tough as it may be, and use it in a good way for our community.

All the hatred stems from Christianity.

I'd have to disagree, and say it stems from fear. Organized religion (not just christianity either) has made its success for thousands of years by playing on this fear of the unknown which is intrinsic in every person the moment they realize, as a child, that there is an inescapable reality called death.

I used to go to gay bashes in San Francisco all the time back in the 80s, but I don't remember most of them. (Okay, not funny... well, maybe just a little bit)

A group of my Army buddies and me (I'm white; Kevin Smith was black; Frank Ortiz was Mexican; Mikey Whitebear was Shoshone--together they made up the 3d mortar section and I was their FDC) used to go down from Fort Ord to Los Angeles and beat skinheads. We were young, fit, disciplined, and resolute, and we used to make a lot of messes. Kinda fun, really...
