Qualifying
----------

Jelena Dokic:
1q + MICHAELA JOHANSSON [16], 1-6 7-5 6-4
2q v Giulia Gatto-Monticone (Sunday)
(There are three qualifying-rounds for this tournament.)

It's Jelena's first match since April (when she lost to Eleonora Punzo at ITF Biarritz), and her first win since August 2005 (unless you count the Australian Open wild-card play-off last December, where Jelena beat four lowly-ranked Australians).

I must admit, I thought that Jelena had simply forgotten to pull out of the tournament when I saw her name in the draw! Because she already withdrew from ITF Zagreb (also the week of 12th June), and the tournament-organisers (spearheaded by Iva Majoli) were quoted as saying:
"Our newest source says that Jelena Dokic thanked us for the Wild Card, but she is unfortunately not ready yet to play tournaments after all."

But according to Jelena Dokic LiVE (http://marijanacdusan.on.neobee.net/english/), "Jelena decided not to use special invitation for Zagreb because one tennis player can get only six wild cards per year (which will be more important for her in the second part of 2006)."

It looks like Jelena is planning another tour of Italy instead. She has also withdrawn from the following tournaments:
* ITF Prostejov (week of 5th June - withdrew 22nd May)
* ITF Grado (week of 5th June - withdrew 1st June)

Jelena is committed to the following tournaments:
* ITF Fontanafredda (week of 19th June)
* ITF Padova (week of 26th June)

Jelena is #692 in the rankings as of 29th May.

Four wins in a row for Jelena Dokic - former world number 4! In today's first round of the ITF event in Gorizia (red clay, 25.000 $) Dokic upsets Maria Vanina Garcia Sokol of Argentine to reach the second round where she will play Madalina Gojnea from Romania (241st in the world) who defeated Angelique Widjaja (Indonesia) 6:2, 6:0 in her openning round match.

Dokic has never played Gojnea in a professional match. 18-year-old player from Romania is the eight seed of the tournament. This year she played quarter-finals in Ortisei (75.000 $), final in Biarritz (25.000 $) and second round match on WTA event in Rabat (145.000 $).

This will be very difficult match for Jelena, but if she continues to contend in good shape, it won't be problem for her.

Good Luck and CONGRATULATIONS!

Well done Jelena!! And keep playing well.

1 BACSINSZKY, Timea SUI 204 2
2 CHAKHNASHVILI, Margalita GEO 215 2
3 STRYCOVA, Barbora CZE 219 2
4 $ HRDINOVA, Eva CZE 223 3
5 $ GOJNEA, Madalina-Victorita ROM 235 1

BACSINSZKY & STRYCOVA if they are still in the event, will be hard to beat. But Jelena showed In OZ that she still has the skill and will to win.

If she keeps playing well, maybe she could get a WC for the US Open.

One consolation from the loss to Gojnea is the fact that Gojnea went on to win the title.

Oh, did she? Then it's not that much of a shame... :D
Referring to my coach post, i meant it by comparing to the last time she played, it is somewhat of an improvement... ;)

Jelena also one more games than 1st seed Bacsinszky & 3rd Strykova who lost 6-4 6-2 & 6-4 6-1.

So 3-6 6-7 is a pretty good scoreline :)
