she withdrew form the tournament in Italy, but is still entered into Slovenia. Also she is now in the main draw :D

I was about to ask the same thing. If Alex Stevenson can squeeze her way through the qualies into a couple big tournaments, Jelena can also.
Which reminds me...Jelena could have actually attempted the same as well. The qualifying draw for most of these US summer hardcourt tournaments are weak.

That's why I said, I wish she'd play up more.

Bigger crowds, bigger stage, weak qually fields.. I feel like she'd be more motivated too. I don't understand the whole 10K thing. I mean I get that she isn't really getting past the quarters of 25k's, but is playing even lower the answer? Especially given the fact that she's clearly proved she can play with anyone regardless of rank in almost beating Schruff and Razzano.

I dunno, something seems strange about this to me. I wish I knew what was going through Jelena's mind...

She reached the semifinals of the JP Morgan tournament and reached the finals of the Acura Classic and I'm sure they would have given her a Qualifying WC, if not a MD WC.

I kinda feel like she shouldn't play at all if she is gonna play $10k tourneys. Even if she wins one...it's not going to do much for her ranking. Winning matches in $10ks probably won't give her much confidence. Why should it? Playing opponents in $10ks isn't like playing players in the top 100. I'm not trying to be pessimisstic (even though it sounds it). Also I don't think beating players in $10k tourneys will help her get over her choking when playing higher ranked opponents. The only way to get over that is to play in as many wta tour events as possible and try to make it to main draws to play the higher ranked opponents to deal with her inner demons first hand. Using $10k tourneys as a confidence builder isn't going to suffice.

I completely agree with this.

Something weird is going on with Jelena, I don't get it.

I think Jelena would do better to play ITF $10k tournaments than not to play at all. Winning a tournament - even a $10k - would be a huge feelgood factor, and Jelena's certainly done enough of not playing at all!

Yeah, who knows. I don't know can Jelena still beat top players like Kim Clijsters but she gave Clisjsters a very good drive -volley lesson in Zurich a few years ago.(in 2003 I guess) I really missed her high mentality matches. She was so smart. I really will delighted if she can make a comeback again at the end of the year.

Good on her to play these events. Its not going to help her ranking much but definitely will help her game. She's probably still trying to iron out a few technical flaws on her serve (which constantly lets her down in close situations) and where else to do it but in some lower tournaments.

Jelena's best tennis always came from her playing alot and getting on a roll. She did have a good knack of keeping a high level of play across a long period of time. These tournaments may start this type of roll.

They arn't tough ones at all. They only have Cetkovska in them (ranked 159) however for one she is priority 3 and the other no.4 .... I doubt she'll end up playing either. Everyone else is pretty low, and tons of people will prob withdraw or play another tournament anyway.

There are still four months left in 2006; that's a long time. Jelena has no points to defend in those months, so she still has a realistic chance to move her ranking up despite these recent withdrawals. I'm not going to start despairing over her unless she doesn't play at all for the rest of the year, and gives no explanation for it.

My guess is that she tweaked or strained something during or after Darmstadt, and the injury turned out to be worse than she thought at first. I hope she'll play in Dusseldorf, but if not, I hope her name will start turning up in some of the later events so we can see she still intends to try. As always with Jelena, we have to just wait and see.
