A chance to play against Serena

Bradenton Prep's Gonzalez tests skills against Williams

JOHN LEMBO

Herald Staff Writer

More than 4,500 miles and six time zones away from the French Open, Alberto Gonzalez stood on one end of a tennis court.

Serena Williams stood on the other.

Gonzalez, who takes classes at Bradenton Prep while training at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, spent Wednesday afternoon volleying with Williams, a former No. 1 player and winner of seven Grand Slam titles.

Williams, who won the 2002 French Open, usually can be found on the clay courts at Roland Garros this time of year, but she has been sidelined by knee and ankle injuries. She'll also miss Wimbledon, which begins June 26.

Gonzalez, who led the Patriots to the Class 1A state tennis title en route to earning the Herald's Player of the Year award, was supposed to head to Miami this week before Bollettieri asked him to stay in Bradenton and work out with Williams, currently working her way back into playing shape. Gonzalez pushed his trip to Monday and spent roughly an hour hitting with one of the world's most recognizable stars.

"It was definitely something new," Gonzalez, the 45th-ranked junior in the world, said of hitting with Williams.

The two didn't keep score. The workout was a chance for Williams, who has played only four matches over the past eight months, to get back on the court.

"She has to do some conditioning," Gonzalez said. "But she has the talent - she's Serena Williams. She hit the ball really, really hard."

Having played in the Davis Cup for his native Panama, Gonzalez has hit with professional players before.

Nonetheless, Gonzalez said he takes something away from every encounter - this one included.

"It told me that I have a long way to go," he said. "Every day, you learn something new."

Gonzalez didn't get a chance to chat with Williams - "When we were done, she just left," - so he doesn't know when she plans on returning to the tour.

But once Williams gets her stroke back, Gonzalez expects her at full strength.

"She's just starting to play," he said.
