Of course, the one I've watched and re-watched the most is the 99 Graf/Hingis debacle, but I was thinking the other day, what other finals did I really enjoy watching over the past 10-20 years. For competitive drama, the Capriati/Clijsters final was as good as they get, even though Jennifer took way too long to finally close it out.

I think if I ever get to see footage of the 1973 French Open final (Court def. Evert), I very well may have a new favorite.

1985 Final =- Evert def Navratilova
1992 - Monica def Steffi 10-8 in the 3rd.

Graf was handed so many slam titles by opponents being too tight/nervous etc to close it out.. Off the top of my mind I can list:

1987 French FInal vs Navratilova
1989 US Open FInal vs Navratilova
1991 Wimbledon final vs Sabatini
1993 French Final vs Fernandez
1993 Wimbledon final vs Novotna
1999 French FInal - vs Hingis..

So the reason I love the French 92 final is because Seles imposed her game on Graf, attacking the backhand, got to a winning position twice, served for it twice and was broken twice.. I thought this was gonna be another example of an opponent choking away a slam final vs Graf but happily she pulled through..

I'm probably going to surprise you here, but I agree with you. Each of the matches you listed, except for the 92 French involved her opponent choking. I didn't, however, see a point in that 92 match where Seles began choking away the match, I saw two gladiators who were some of the best fighters ever, and rather late in the third set, Graf became stubborned (as she frequently did) and refused to come in to the net when she had easy putaways, and just backed into her backhand corner and decided to keep trying to hit her forehand up the line over the high part of the net. Her blockheaded stubbornedness cost her that match.

1996 Graf bt Sanchez.

But it was a hard choice. I used to really worry everytime they met on clay because Steffi had so many problems playing Aranxtha who knew how to play her and beat Graf in some very tight, big matches ( though of course she lost many more than she won). I saw the same thing happening in this match. Steffi won the first set, Sanchez took the second. Then when Sanchez led in the third I thought it's all over. I was screaming and shouting, as were the Rg crowd, for Steffi to come back and what a great moment it was when she did.

Seriously it happened only ONCE in the last 10 years that the person I was rooting for won the French Open final... and it was Myskina def. Dementieva in 2004:D Even though the match was horrendous, I was SO happy to see Nastya win that it's my best memory of a French Open final:lol::D I just couldn't believe that the person I was rooting for FINALLY won the French Open final, it had just never happened to me:lol:

For example, tomorrow I want Sveta to win... do you think I'm confident it will happen:lol:?

i'm dying to see 1992 start to finish after it was voted by the best final ever of women's tennis... the 1996 final was unbelieveable, but as an arantxa fan, it was heart wrenching...the 1998 final was great for me also, since it was such a surprise for arantxa to take that title, was really really happy for her... thinking back, the french has had some great finals, really great finals, more great finals than most of the other majors

Graf - Hingis :D

This one was high drama!

1992 was my favorite, but 1999 is linked to it...here's how I see them.

What was interesting about it was that 1992 was really a changing of the guard. Seles was trying to dominate the rivalry, and Graf was trying to fight it off. Seles prevailed in that match.

In 1999, Hingis had already started to dominate (at least the #1 ranking) but she needed RG to complete her resume. Graf stood in her way. Before the 1999 RG, Hingis said in an interview that Graf was too old (and hindered by injuries) to win another slam. Then she finds Graf in the final. Graf was able to accomplish what she was unable to in 1992...fight off the young gun.

I actually loved both matches. Despite my username...I was actually rooting for Graf in 1992.

What also added fuel to the fire was Melanie Molitor mentioning to the press that Graf's body was spent, and her time had passed. Couple this with the fact that Hingis announced to the press after she had won her semi and was waiting out the Seles/Graf semi, that she'd rather play Graf, and that Monica "looked dangerous". The Hingis camp obviously couldn't stand Steffi Graf. Who would with a losing h2h record like that?

sfselesfan

1999 was also the year Molitor was warned from the chair umpire to stop coaching Martina.

When Monica beat Steffi in 1992, 10-8 in the third. Amazing match!

Mary winning in 2000 was such a good moment for her!

That 1992 final was fantastic. Hands down best ever in terms of the quality of the tennis and both players were so intense. The stabbing of Seles really cost tennis some more phenominal match ups between two great champions. In terms of sheer drama then the 1999 final is near impossible to beat.

1985 Final =- Evert def Navratilova
1992 - Monica def Steffi 10-8 in the 3rd.

1987 French FInal vs Navratilova
1989 US Open FInal vs Navratilova
1991 Wimbledon final vs Sabatini
1993 French Final vs Fernandez
1993 Wimbledon final vs Novotna
1999 French FInal - vs Hingis..
... .

Especially in the 1991 Wimbledon, in the 1993 FO and in the 1999 FO final Graf played below par in the beginning. When she raised her game she won.
Navratilova made 2 DF at a crucial point in the 1987 FO final.
Navratilova was not able to stay at this insane high level of the first 55 minutes in the USO 1989 final, nothing uncommon. That match was no choke.
Novotna's 1993 Wimbledon final loss was a choke. But she did choke because Graf was on the other side of the net. Players knew how dangerous Graf was until the last ball was played. THAT was Steffis forte.

....So the reason I love the French 92 final is because Seles imposed her game on Graf, attacking the backhand, got to a winning position twice, served for it twice and was broken twice.. I thought this was gonna be another example of an opponent choking away a slam final vs Graf but happily she pulled through..

Graf made many, many unforced errors in that match. So her far more winners didn't win the match for her.
Seles played a great counter-attacking game, though. Sanchez-like.
Although Seles lost most of her matches against Graf she never was afraid of Steffi. The FO 1992 is a fine example.

Most enthralling finals for me were :

1 : 1992 Seles d. Graf 6-2 3-6 10-8
2 : 1989 Sanchez d. Graf 7-6 3-6 7-5
3 : 2001 Capriati d. Clijsters 1-6 6-4 12-10

I also have to mention Navratilova's 1984 6-3 6-1 win over clay court queen Evert, it was one of the most awesome displays of tennis from one person that I've ever seen.

As much as i know Gaby has choked many matches away, the Wimbledon Final 1991 was not one of them:

Graf came up with some espectacular winners in fact:
- Gaby serving at 6-5 for the match Graf made 4 winners to break.
- Hit an amazing passing shot winner off her back foot with her forehand to held for 7-6
- Hit 3 winners while Gaby served at 6-7 to stay in the match.

This without mentioning some points that Graf won by forcing the error.

1. ...in 1987, Graf defeated the World No. 1 Martina Navratilova in an epic battle, -6-4, 4-6, 8-6. It was Graf's first GS win, and ironically enough, she won her last GS event at Roland Garros in 1999.

2. Evert d. Navratilova 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in the 1985 French Open finals.
