In 1998, Aranxta came into the finals of the French with a 3-14 record to Monica Seles. Svetlana will have to call on for some of that Spanish mojo in order to win on Saturday.

Isn't this more of an Arantxa 1989 as Sveta is facing the defending champion and the overwhelming favorite?

Time to tell Sveta to "play" Justine and not "pray" to Justine. ;)

Monica :bigcry:

The missed overhead in the net in 1998 at the French Open.

Sveta won her 2 biggest finals, USO and Miami.
I think she will play well

Despite the H2H - I'm truly astonished it's so lopsided - Kuznetsova is a player that can hurt Justine on any surface. We should not be so surprised at Kuznetsova's passage to the final, when you think that she still is registered with the Sanchez Casals academy.

She is very quick horizontally and vertically on the court, has variety (though she often chooses not to use it), and she can hit Justine off the court. The problem is that she often hits her own self off the court in the process.

She's even got Aranxta on her side.. I think she'll play very well. Looking at their clay matches - 7-5, 7-5, 7-6 in the final sets - they are pretty evenly matched and I know Justine respects her abilities enormously. She doesn't pick her practice partners at random ;)

Mostly what's lost her matches against Ju on clay has been not playing the big points well. Whether that trend continues is up to Svetlana. We'll see.

My money's still on Justine. Justine has been VERY solid on the big points all tournament - saved set points against Yakimova, served two aces to take the 1st set against Kim, sneakily won the first set against ALG. But I think it'll be close. 'bout time RG had a decent womens' final!

Actually, Arantxa came into the final with a 2-14 record against Seles (at least in official tour matches).

SV had beaten Seles in their previous meeting on carpet though.

Unfortunately Justine does not have Monica's lack of preparation coming into the tournament.

That's not to detract from ASV's worthy victory, nor to say Sveta :hearts: won't win.

True. Monica's father passed away right before the 1998 tournament.

Well said Kart ;) :p
You know I love me some Monica  and I feel even bad for saying this but Monica was in her best shape since her comeback at RG 1998 and did hand Hingis a straight sets beatdown in the semis, so she was in pretty good form. I miss those great finals through the 90s. They seemed better back then.

And longer. Oh well, at least Sveta can say that she won more games than the two previous finalists did combined. :o

Although I would have liked to have seen her defend Arantxa's record.
