New Delhi (Hindi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindi_language): नई दिल्ली, Mahl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahl_language): އާ ދިއްލީ, Punjabi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punjabi_language): ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ, Urdu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urdu_language): نئی دلی), an urban area within the metropolis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis) of Delhi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delhi), is the capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital) of India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India) and the seat of the Government of India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_of_India). It is one of the three municipal corporations of the National Capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Capital_Territory_of_Delhi)
New Delhi was laid out to the south of the older city constructed by Shah Jahan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shah_Jahan), which is now often referred to as Old Delhi. However, New Delhi overlays many of the previous cities constructed there; hence it includes many monuments of previous cities, and constructions.
Much of New Delhi was planned by Sir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir)Edwin Lutyens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Lutyens), who laid out a grandiose central administrative area as a testament to British imperial pretensions. Rajpath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajpath) - then Kingsway - stretched from the War Memorial - now India Gate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India_Gate) to the Viceroy's House - Rashtrapati Bhavan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashtrapati_Bhavan) atop Raisina Hill. The scale, extravagance and magnificence of New Delhi was not unlike Washington, or Haussmann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haussmann) and his patron Napoleon III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon_III)'s Paris, both cities designed to awe the newcomer with the power of the central State. The Mughal garden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mughal_garden) of Rashtrapati Bhavan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashtrapati_Bhavan) was designed with more regard to India's climate and design tradition, following a conversation with Constance Villiers-Stuart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constance_Villiers-Stuart).
Tucked away are other clues to the worldview of the designers; Herbert Baker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Baker)'s Parliament House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_House) is barely visible from Rajpath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajpath), as deliberative democracy was not a central part of Britain's plans for India; in fact, the main entrance to the Central Secretariat North Block (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Block) declares "Liberty will not descend to a people; a people must raise themselves to liberty. It is a blessing which must be earned before it can be enjoyed"
