It was 6-3 7-5 actually.

Quite a high quality first set, and a nice few last games. Good rallies, and Safina made some brilliant angles. :) Good luck in 2R Dinara!

Vera made some good shot but was unable to hold her serve when she was at 4/3 that's too bad

Vera played well, but Dinara is wayy too high on confidence to lose to a player of her caliber. Well done Dinara. :hearts: :D

Vera you a CHOKER!
Led 3-1, then 4-2 and so many BP missed...

Vera  I loved it when she said the the linesperson during the match something like " I hit a nice shot and then it is like error, error, error!!". She summed up her performance pretty well there ;) I also loved her theatrical scream when she hit an awful first serve that barely reached the net in the second set - she is giving Francesca a run for her money in the entertainment stakes

Vera.... wasted so many chances but at least the scoreline is better than 1-6 2-6 against Martina at the AO..

I think Safina has a very good chance of sneaking into the semis of this slam. Her draw definately isn't too bad.

So I watched a little to see how Vera is playing now and my conclusion is that she lost so much power and speed where she is now very below average

You have to be careful talking of caliber, Dinara has a way to go yet before she reaches Vera's highest ranking and achievements.Dinara is playing very well and I hope she goes deep into the tournament (now) but an improvement in the looser's 1st serve% could have altered the outcome of the match. Dinara has improved her lateral movement since I last watched her.

Congrats Dinara!
good start,dini-baby!! :bounce:  keep n it real!

and in all fairness,IMO,compared with a lot of her earlier matches, vera did quite well here.i have the feeling, she is more relaxed now.at least, she smiled, while going off the court,so maybe, she has a different sight to it all now.

the same goes for dinara.she keeps her emotions far better in touch, nowadays.and you see:it helps her...

poor Vera. Her second first round loss in a GS this yeara after losing to Martina Hingis at the Australian Open.

Vera had her chances to get level and blew it. :( She's been quite unlucky with her draws at the Slams this year. Maybe she'll have more luck at Wimbledon.

Disappointing, but expected. Wish I could see the match so I'd know how exactly Vera's playing at the moment, and what she needs to improve. That said, at least she was fighting and didn't get completely blown off the court. Come on, Vera, I still believe you can get back your top 10 form!

Congrats to Safina. She's really played well lately - it's good to see her realizing her potential. A QF or beyond is very possible with her draw. Good luck, Dinara! :)

I really start to hate this fucking Lex Carrington guy who destroyed Vera's career.. Vera's career was going uphill until she met this golddigger..

Zvonareva played very well and earned my respect. She's yet another atypical Russian retriever; not as fast as Nastya, but she has a nasty bite - besides being a good defender, she can hit very hard when necessary, has good shot variety and court sense, and given an opportunity, will step in and finish the point off. Probably not top 10 material as she once was, but solid top 30. If it weren't for those stupid errors at the worst possible times, I'm convinced she might well have taken at least a set. Safina was clearly outplayed during some stretches of the match. She helped Zvonareva by serving in a predictable fashion, but credit mus nonetheless be given to Zvonareva's excellent return of serve, which prevented Safina from earning that many free points off it. Zvonareva lost in straight sets because when it really mattered her level of play decreased while Safina became more aggressive and confident.

Overall, it was an absolutely superb match with some great rallies and shotmaking.
