Talking exclusively to Eurosport, Elena Dementieva said that she now felt stuck among the world's elite. With Roland Garros now on the horizon, the 2004 runner-up is looking forward to returning to the scene of her break-through grand slam, having enjoyed a solid start to the year.

"I feel stuck in the top ten!" said the 24-year-old. "I need to go forward, improve my serve, be stronger."

Having come so close to winning her first major on two occasions, she also made the final of the US Open in 2004, Dementieva is sure that with time on her side she can achieve her grand slam goal.

"I have my time and my experience so hopefully I will get there," she said.

http://i.eurosport.com/2006/02/05/248804-803909-151-113.jpgThe world number eight admits that her serve can be a weak area in her game, but made light of the problem: "I am working on it but I don't thinking having a good serve is the most important thing. It is about a lot of things coming together that makes you a good player."

Despite her supposed shortcomings, Elena picked up a fifth career tour title earlier this season with an easy win in Tokyo at the Pan Pacific Open, crushing the resurgent Martina Hingis 6-2 6-0 in the final.

The right-hander declared that she felt: satisfied with the way I am playing right now," adding that a win like that: "boosts your confidence which is important for going into a grand slam."

FAVOURITE EVENT

With her previous good experience of Paris, Roland Garros is predictably Dementieva's favourite major.

"I like to play clay, I am trying to get ready for the French Open which is my favourite event," said the Russian. "Every time I'm coming to the French Open, I am coming for the win!

http://i.eurosport.com/2006/05/24/280416-1110431-151-211.jpg"I have so many good memories, playing on centre court. I enjoy every single day that I am there and I am looking forward to this year as well"

2004 saw Elena battle her way to her maiden major final in Paris, before suffering a chastening defeat at the hands of compatriot Anastasia Myskina: "I cried after I lost, but after two days I realised it was the biggest moment of my career and it was such a pleasure to play in front of such a great crowd"

"It was my first grand slam final and I am hoping this previous experience will help me win this years title."

I love Lena but I don't think she'll win. There are a few players that have much better shots at winning the title (Petrova, Henin-Hardenne...).

Sometimes Lena plays amazing tennis (Fed Cup final last year!) but IMO she doesn't have the consistency to be in the top 3 or even 5.
When I see her play she often plays really well, but sometimes there are horrible scorelines (Safina in Rome, Lena lost 61 61, right?)

Best luck in RG! ;)

She is a streaky type of player and when she gets on a hot run with some confidence she is very tough to stop - I call her type of game "frustration" because she really frustrates opponents by breaking their serves over and over again. She is used to her serve being broken several times in a match whereas her opponent is not.

she's one of the girls who i'd really LOVE to see win it.
i'd be more confident if she had shown some excellence during the clay season, but she didn't.

I really think her best shot is the U.S. Open -- she has always produced amazing tennis there. But you never know with Elena.

The title is a bit misleading. She feels stuck in the top 10.
That is a good place to get stuck in

I think this is her best chance to win a major. Elena is a player that shoudl be watched on this surface. She can grind and grind all day. She also can hit some amazing groundies.

Those to watch:

Venus
Hingis
Momo
Sveta
Elena
Henin
Kim

These are my top RG picks.

I agree I think the winner will either be Venus, Hingis, Momo, or Petrova of this year FO. I wish Serena was fit and playing she would be a shoe in to win this thing.

Elena does seem to be stuck at her current ranking. She's had opportunities to improve it this year, after her slow start to the previous season, but she hasn't really taken advantage of a weakened field.
