who would win this much anticipated match. although this is hingis' best chance on the red stuff to beat maria, if maria puts on a great performance i think she would have the edge, maria leads the series 2-1 after there first meeting and won them both in straight sets.

I think Hingis would win easily given that Sharapova hasnt played a clay court match all year and Hingis has and is better on the clay naturally...

I would say Hingis at this point in time, Masha is probably not quite as good as Hingis on clay and with no match practice on the surface it would be a tough ask for Masha to beat Hingis on clay this year. Although you can never discount the fight and determination Masha has.

On clay? Both being at their best? Martina.

If both are on form, and 100% fit, I'll still take Martina.

It's true, you never know with a player like Maria but let's face it. Martina wins this match 9 times out of 10.

If Martina and Maria are at their best, Martina should win. She is better on clay.

Hingis should win right now but Maria might outgun her, who knows until they play!

Hingis in straights. Maria hasn't really beaten ANY big names on clay, and Hingis would get back almost every single ball.

Maria hasn't played in over 7 weeks. If her ankle has healed enough to play at Roland Garros, she'll certainly be at a disadvantage.

If not for that, I'd say she could beat Martina like she has done the past two times they played each other.

Hingis would win this easily. Sharapova doesn't know how to move on a clay court and Hingis would just play a whole variety of shots to exploit this weakness. If any of you saw what Patty did to Maria last year on a clay court Hingis would do more or less the same to her!

Didn't I get chewed out a couple of days ago for asking the same question.

OK, are we forgetting how Martina beat Sharapova in straight sets on quite possibly the fastest court on the entire schedule? Martina ought to demolish Sharapova on clay.

Hingis definitely!

Hingis 6-3, 6-1

Yeah  considering that Maria only looses to good clay courters.
When she lose to Henin last year she had a better score line then that

Hingis 6-3, 6-1

I very much doubt it, unless Sharapova's game is completely off. She's too much of a fighter any way. More like 6-3 7-5.

Pierce and Dementieva are reasonable wins on clay

Are you forgetting how Maria beat Hingis in straight sets on two slower courts? :wavey:

Hingis 9/10 of the time. Sharapova on a really good day when Hingis is off.

This match up on clay could very likely result in a 6/0, 6/0 win for the Swiss Miss.

I wouldn't think a double bagel is possible, lol. More likely two fairlt tight sets, something like 6-3 6-4 to Martina. Maybe we'll get the see the match at RG.

anyway, right now...obviously martina. the opposite result would be a surprise at this point. everyone knows clay is maria's weakest surface and is still developing her clay court game. martina's experience on clay already puts her at an advantage. she's no doubt a better clay courter. factor in both their clay seasons this year and I dont think there's any other logical answer to this question heading into the french. if maria plays her best clay court tennis though which at this point in unlikely what with the injury and no warm-ups but let's say she does, she has a chance. at this pt though, i am not even sure if she'll play rg...

Hingis has too much class for Maria on clay... Maria needs to play some actual clay court matches if she ever wants to get good on the stuff. Right now Hingis would win 62 64 i reckon.

but then sharapova beat her rather easily the next 2 times they've played. and anyways, hingis has always loved indoor fast courts. it's a common misconception that hingis just LOVES red clay because IMO, she's much rather be on a hardcourt.

regardless, sharapova knows how to beat her now and would be able to do it, regardless of the surface. her return of serve is too good for martina, and her serve gets her free points martina just doesn't see.

anyway, there's only one way to find out who would win. i hope to see them play at the french. in a later round. it would be really exciting.
