a pigeon is a player who is seeded too high based on current form and/or surface preference, and therefore is likely to be an upset victim.

do you really expect either to play, after not appearing in any warmup events?

Pierce has been practicing at Roland Garros

If you go by your logic, Sharapova would not be playing either

How is Jankovic not a pigeon? She hasn't played top 50 tennis in months, and her recent run doesn't change my mind.

And ALG is no darkhorse. I don't like her chances on clay this year. And Ivanovic IS a darkhorse.

Pierce hasn't played since February.

If she forces herself to play, she'll just be eating up a seed.

Shahar and Sofia seeded even if Tatiana and Mary play. :woohoo:.

A seed she completely deserves because of her results over the last 12 months, and being a former champion and twice runner up.. If she feels she is ready, why shouldnt she play? just cause some 30-35 player may get a seed to get to the third round.. Mary can lose into the third round, or maybe earlier, but if she feels she's ready she should play definitely.

i hear you, but Jankovic just won 3 matches in a row on clay. The other pigeons have barely won any matches all season.

Even though she beat Momo last year, i'm skeptical about Ivanovic on clay. She's a big basher and Wimby is the likely breakout tournie for her.

I think i saw Yulia Fedossova today - not sure, she sure looked similar to her.
I bought tkts by the way, at the stadium.

Also am sure i saw Julien Boutter, running with some of the lower ranked frenchies probably, maybe with Ascione, but im sure it was boutter, he retired last year.

Afraid so.

Srebotnik ain't in too great form either, despite reaching her highest career rank this week.

And Bartoli...She is just gonna retire halfway through her first match. :o

Vaidisova & Myskina :help:

yeah, only a few of the 17-32 seeds are worth a darn. Srebotnik, Bartoli, Arvidsson, Chakvetadze and Jankovic could easily be added to the pigeons list. I think there are gonna be quite a few lower ranked players spicing up R32.

And Myskina unfortunately is probably a pigeon at #10.

well I don't think anna- lena is a darkhorse. She loves clay and played great on clay tournaments.

Sharapova is no pigeon, i think she is an under rated player and might be a surprise dark horse. i mean some people for get that sharapova beat pierce in rome last year in straight sets before RG, and as we all know pierce got to the final, maria was unfortunate she had to face justine in the quaters, and also maria won more games off justine than pierce, so you know sharapova may not be the best on clay, but by know means is she a pigeon, i see her making the quaters at the very least and with a tough draw but i can also see her winning it with an easy and a few injuries. also id put sharapova way above venus at the moment. ok venus has played a couple of times, and she should have lost to hingis in berlin but hingis choked, and then she lost easily to kutzy. after that venus took 3 sets to beat jankovic whos had a terrible year, and then played great to beat hingis 6-0 but after that it was all downhill she cant be consistent at all for 2 sets nevermind 3, whereas sharapova can.

Yes but Venus has had some clay court matches this season, unlike Sharapova who hasn't due to injury. To be honest, despite having very good results at the Slams (not below the QF since the Australian Open 2005, I think), I'd be surprised if Maria goes far at Roland Garros simply based on the lack of match practice on clay. This is assuming her ankle isn't bad enough for her to pull out, which I hope she doesn't.

Pierce and Golovin will both end up playing I think, whether theyre actually ready to or not. Great field though. Really looking forward to the drama.

On another note, I think its completely unfair to classify Maria as a pigeon... even on clay.

well, i asked myself, "do i expect to see Sharapova playing on Semifinals Thursday"? (which is what she is seeded for). And the answer i got was, "absolutely not". The issue is that she is getting such a high seed with no proven claycourt form.

i have a feeling that Maria is going to withdraw. she'd prefer to focus on Wimbledon than to risk injury on a surface she doesn't show any fancy to.

maybe just because Maria hasn't plays any clay court events coming into RG?
