Budapest (pronounced (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet_for_English) ['budɒˌpɛʃt]) is the capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitals_of_Hungary) city of Hungary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungary) and the country's principal political (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political), cultural (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural), commercial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial), industrial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industry) and transportation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transportation) center.

Budapest has approximately 1.7 million inhabitants, down from a mid-1980s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980s) peak of 2.1 million. Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danube) with the amalgamation on 17 November (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_17)1873 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1873) of right-bank Buda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buda) (Ofen in German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_language)) and Óbuda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%93buda) (Old Buda or Alt-Ofen) together with Pest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pest_%28city%29) on the left (east) bank. It is the seventh largest city in the European Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Largest_cities_of_the_European_Union_by_population ).

The area was occupied around the year 900 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/900) by the Magyars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magyars) of Central Asia, the cultural and linguistic ancestors of today's ethnic Hungarians, who a century later officially founded the Kingdom of Hungary. Already a place of some significance, Pest recovered rapidly from its destruction by Mongol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongols) invaders in 1241 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1241), but it was Buda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buda), the seat of a royal castle since 1247 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1247), which in 1361 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1361) became the capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital) of Hungary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Hungary). The Croats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croats) who have been in personal union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_union) with the Hungarian Crown for centuries and also accepted Budapest as their capital, still call this city Budimpešta (Croatian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatian_language) and Serbian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_language): Budim for Buda and Pešta for Pest).

The Ottoman Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire)'s conquest of most of Hungary in the 16th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16th_century) interrupted the cities' growth: Buda and Pest fell to the invaders in 1541 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1541). While Buda remained the seat of a Turkish pasha, and administrative center of a whole vilayet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilayet), Pest was largely derelict by the time of their recapture in 1686 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1686) by Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria)'s Habsburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habsburg) rulers, who since 1526 had been Kings of Hungary despite their loss of most of the country.

It was Pest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pest_%28city%29), a bustling commercial town, which enjoyed the faster growth rate in the 18th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18th_century) and 19th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19th_century) century and contributed the overwhelming majority of the cities' combined growth in the 19th. By 1800 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1800) its population was larger than that of Buda and Óbuda combined. The population of Pest grew twentyfold in the following century to 600,000, while that of Buda and Óbuda quintupled.

The fusion of the three cities under a single administration, first enacted by the Hungarian revolutionary government in 1849 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1849) but revoked on the subsequent restoration of Habsburg authority, was finally effected by the autonomous Hungarian royal government established under the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ausgleich) ("Compromise") of 1867 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1867); see Austria-Hungary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria-Hungary). The total population of the unified capital grew nearly sevenfold in 1840 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1840)–1900 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1900) to 730,000.
