Good luck next match Nicole!!! I saw Niki overwhelm Jie at the USO last year, but clay might be a different story and Jie might stay closer in this match. Jie has also improved her play since last year, so this will be an interesting match! If Nicole wins this match, she's got a great chance to win the tournament. Na Li or Jankovic might be somewhat tough, but the top half of the draw doesn't really have any players that I think would trouble Nicole much.

IMO Zheng is very beatable - she's like Nikki in that she plays a hardcourt-like game on clay.

Unlike Castano and Hingis, Zheng just doesn't have the variety which Nikki seems to have trouble against on clay.

"It was cold and raining on and off so it was a very tough match," Vaidisova said. "In the second set I tried to go for too much to finish the match but it didn’t work and we ended up playing a third set. I made a lot of errors I shouldn’t have, but I’m happy it ended the way it did. I’m ready to go to the end of the tournament. The more matches I play, the better I get."

Vaidisova, who was born in Germany but now resides in Prague, claimed three of her five Tour singles titles last year. On Friday, she will be playing in her second Tour semifinal of the year (her first was in Sydney). Her opponent is No.8 seed Jelena Jankovic, a 75 61 winner over Li Na.

May 26th, 2006, 06:10 PM
Standing in the way of Peng and her first Tour title is No.2-seeded Czech phenom Nicole Vaidisova, who advanced to Saturday's final when No.8-seeded Jelena Jankovic retired down 63 10 due to dizziness on Friday.

"I didn't realize she wasn't feeling well," said Vaidisova, the tournament favorite ever since top seed Patty Schnyder lost earlier in the week. "Of course I'm happy to be in the final but I would've preferred to play the whole match. On the other hand, it's better than a three-setter where you are exhausted at the end. I will just rest today and I look forward to the final tomorrow."

Vaidisova will not only be seeking her sixth career Tour singles title on Saturday, she will play for her 100th career professional singles match victory. The 17-year-old has five titles to her credit already, at Vancouver and Tashkent in 2004 and at Seoul, Tokyo [Japan Open] and Bangkok in 2005. The three most recent titles were acquired during an impressive 18-match win streak that also took her to her first Tier II semifinal last November at Philadelphia.

Vaidisova and Peng have played once previously, with the 18th-ranked Czech downing the 70th-ranked Chinese 76(2) 75 at an ITF Women's Circuit event on hard courts in 2004.

Second-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova and surprising Chinese Shuai Peng will play for the title Saturday at the $175,000 Strasbourg International, a final clay-court French Open tune-up.

The 17-year-old Vaidisova was leading eighth-seeded Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 1-0 when the Serb retired due to dizziness in their semifinal bout.

Peng ousted fourth-seeded and defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at Ligue d'Alsace de Tennis. The Spanish Medina Garrigues bested Poland's Marta Domachowska in last year's finale here.

The world No. 18 Vaidisova is 5-1 in her career finals, four of which came last season. The 20-year-old Peng will appear in her first-ever final on the circuit.

The 2006 Strasbourg champion will claim $28,000.

Vaidisova Wins Maiden Clay Court Title in Strasbourg

STRASBOURG, France - Czech phenom Nicole Vaidisova captured her sixth career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title on Saturday, defeating China's Peng Shuai in straight sets for the Internationaux de Strasbourg, one of two Roland Garros tune-ups this week.

Vaidisova, seeded No.2 at the Tier III event, notched her 99th career singles match victory against the unseeded Peng, 76(7) 63, but not without a fight. The Chinese led 3-0 in the first set and seemed on the verge of taking the first set tie-break, but made two errors to hand the set to Vaidisova. The Czech then took control of the match in the second set.

"I had to cut down on my errors to get back on track," said Vaidisova of the early lapse. "She had a couple of chances in the tie-break to take the set but I was luckier. We were both nervous. I was up 3-0 in the second set and I let that get away from me, but managed to pull it out in the end."

For Vaidisova, the Strasbourg run marks her first title of the year, and sixth of her career. The 17-year-old had five titles to her credit already, at Vancouver and Tashkent in 2004, and at Seoul, Tokyo [Japan Open] and Bangkok in 2005. The three most recent titles were acquired during an 18-match win streak that also took her to her first Tier II semifinal last November at Philadelphia. This is her first title on clay, however, and the timing couldn't be better.

"This is the best preparation for Roland Garros," said Vaidisova, seeded No.16 in Paris. "To win an event on the same surface is the best preparation you can have. I'm extremely happy with my week in Strasbourg and I'm going into Paris as well-prepared as I can be."

The teenager also won a Mazda MX-5 sports car for winning the title.

"I'm really happy to win the car but I don't start driving lessons for another couple of months!"

For Peng, Strasbourg still remains a great achievement despite the defeat. After a stellar 2005 and a disappointing beginning to 2006, Peng resurrected her game during this clay court season, winning consecutive matches for the first time this year two weeks ago in reaching the Prague semis, and now winning another string of matches in reaching her career-first Tour final here.

"I reached my first final and that is a good thing," Peng stated. "Now I will forget about this loss and concentrate on the Grand Slams. I start in Paris on Monday, so I have to just rest and start to focus on that. I had a good week here."

Last year, Peng was one of the fastest-rising players on the circuit, notching three Top 10 wins (including a stunner over Kim Clijsters in San Diego, the Belgian's only loss on summer hardcourts) and going as high as No.31, a record for China.

In the Internationaux de Strasbourg doubles final, top seeds Liezel Huber and Martina Navratilova downed No.3 seeds Martina Müller and Andreea Vanc, 62 76(1). Huber took home her 14th career Tour doubles title (and second of the year), while Navratilova claimed her 176th (and first of the year).

Müller also featured prominently in the singles draw, ousting top seed Patty Schnyder in straight sets in the second round, the German's first Top 10 win.

----------------

That's cool she also got a car for winning. They're really nice
