View Full Version : Will Davenport and Hingis Rise back to #1 and 2 when they return???

May 23rd, 2002, 05:31 AM
I think they will definitely be back in the hunt. If Davenport stays healthy she get back there when she plays next winter/spring. If Hingis's surgery works out I think she will someday be #1 again.

What are your thoughts?

May 23rd, 2002, 05:35 AM
It's a definate possibility. 'Specially if they play the events next year that they've missed this year. Surefire way to gain points - since they'll not be defending those points.

May 23rd, 2002, 05:37 AM
i think like you evadafan;) if marti and lindsay stay healthy, surely they are going to reach the top spots again:)

May 23rd, 2002, 05:44 AM
Not a chance.

Lindsay will be retired before she is 30 and Marti may struggle to stay in the top ten.

I dont think they will ever be 1 and 2 again.

I think they can regain the top 5 again though - LIndsay's knee injury may hurt her movement, but she isn't known for winning matches based on her court coverage anyhow - so I dont think it will kill her game.

Martina Hingis, on an off year stil does better than anyone not named Venus, Jenn, Serena, etc. So I think she will get into the top 5 again.

people like Tee Rexx are just wishful thinking.

They've been saying that Martina would fall out of the top ten for years now .

May 23rd, 2002, 06:23 AM
yep. it's only a matter of time till Lindsay is no. 1 again. and I have faith in Marti, too. she'll get back on the horse. she's a fighter.

I agree with Becca. I think they can get back into the top 5, but it'll be tough for them to reach #1 and #2. If it does happen, I don't think it'll be for long.

May 23rd, 2002, 06:35 AM
I don't think it will happen.

Lindsay came back last year in a good shape. Probably she can do ir again this year, and gain more points in the begining of the next season, but she also has to defend all her titles this year.
Martina is a mistery yes, we don't know if she will be ok after the operation, and when will be she able to play again.

I think they can improve their ranking and stay in #4 to #7, but not to the top spot. Venus, Serena, Justine, Kim and Jennifer are the top 5 for a long time;)

May 23rd, 2002, 06:43 AM
Both at 1 and 2, I don't think so.

If I had to put my money on one of them to be number 1 again, I would bet on Lindsay. After all, she's struggling with an injury, while Martina is struggling with her game. She's less intimidating than Lindsay right now.

May 23rd, 2002, 06:44 AM
venus, jennifer and serena are surely tough contenders for the top spots.
but once lindsay and martina come back healthy, i'd definitely put them above kim and justine (as much as i like those two).

May 23rd, 2002, 07:30 AM
I think they will. They did it before, theres no reason why they couldnt do it again.

I think Lindsay can become number 1 again... she has the game to do it. Injury is putting her out.

With Martina, it is her game. Unless she fixes that, I don't see her getting to number 1 or 2.

May 23rd, 2002, 10:35 AM
It will be a long and hard way, but I think they can do it!

May 23rd, 2002, 10:51 AM
At the same time? Unlikely. Can lindsay make it to #1 and Martina to #2 at SOME point? Yes.

May 23rd, 2002, 12:14 PM
I won't be surprised if they can make it if they work hard. Anything can happen.

Hingis never thought Venus will be No1 till she retires... Only time will tell:p

May 23rd, 2002, 12:38 PM
Not at the same time, like Volcana said, but I see Lindsay reaching 1 or 2 again before Martina, who should be able to rise a few notches and remain in the top 5 at least.

May 23rd, 2002, 01:26 PM
Lindsay, possibly, she has the game to play with Jen and Venus and Serena. And she was ON FIRE last summer when she came back from her injury.
Hingis, I just don't think so. Unless she comes back with MUCH improved FIRST and SECOND serve, and she is MUCH more aggressive on a consistent basis, I think it will be tough for her to get the #1 spot back. But, I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong if she can indeed pull it off.

May 23rd, 2002, 01:41 PM
Becca - everyone falls out of the top ten eventually ;)

I think they're both capable of getting back to that level, although I agree it's unlikely they'd be 1 and 2 at the same time. I also think, given the amount of time they've had to take off due to injury, it would take them a fair amount of time to get there.

May 23rd, 2002, 01:43 PM

Lindsay definitly.

May 23rd, 2002, 02:15 PM
yes i think they can... somewhere around end of next year... when they have no points to defend... esp LIndsay.. nothing to defend first half of the year

May 23rd, 2002, 02:40 PM
Lindsay possibly. Martina no, unless she plays a really full schedule and picks up points from every tournie.

May 23rd, 2002, 06:52 PM

Matina will definitely in haunt again, but to bet for her in her current game, is gambling. Top 5 is for sure though.

May 23rd, 2002, 06:59 PM
I think perhaps both will be #1 for a short time later in their career, definately. But not #1 & #2 at the same time. No way.

May 23rd, 2002, 07:00 PM
If I will bet for top 5 positions next year, it would be.

1. Lindsay ( no points to defend on half year)
2. Venus
3. Capritai
4. Kim
5. Serena

May 23rd, 2002, 08:04 PM
I will just be happy to see them both back and hopefully very hungry for some titles. Things can only get better and better. Lindsay should fly back up the rankings next year, given how long she has been out this year.

May 23rd, 2002, 08:32 PM
The top, yes, number 1 and 2, no. I see them being around 3-8 but I don't think 1 and 2 is realistic... maybe one of them but not both!

I'd like to see it happening, not sure if it will, but it would be great if it did.

May 23rd, 2002, 09:07 PM
Nope. As I have said before, though I am not a fan of Serena, she is going to dominate the circut in a years time. Venus will fall however, and will be overshadowed by Serena in the end. Miami was a major changing of the guard for Women's tennis. Marti (sadly) may just have to struggle to stay in top 8, and I can't see her getting to no. 1 unless she gets a much better serve, and is more aggressive. Lindsay will be in top 4, but probably not no. 1. As I see it, the best world players in 1 year:
1- Serena
2- Jennifer
3- Venus
4- Lindsay
5- Monica
6- Martina
7- Daniela
8- Justine
9- Kim
10- Jelena
I could be wrong, but I don't see it as much different. In reality, I think Marti has a mental advantage over Monica, but otherwise this is about the level of their talents as well. I would watch Justine though. If her recent success continues on hard courts, she will be top 5 instead of Lindsay or Monica.

May 23rd, 2002, 09:43 PM
hingis and davenport can get back to number 1 and 2 again? why not, after all venus, capriati, serena, henin, clijsters and hantuchova must also get injured and all at the same time, too.

May 23rd, 2002, 09:53 PM
I guess many of you like ignoring facts?

Not playing GREAT, and playing less events than Venus and Jen, winning only two, Martina had accumulated more points than anyone this year. At this pace, if she didn't get injured, she would have finished the year #1, whether you like it or not. Don't argue with me; argue with the numbers.

And who does EVERY top 10 player, from Martina to Jennifer to Jelena to Justine say they like to play least? No, not Serena, not Venus, but Lindsay. She has a winning record against all but Serena, and lest we forget, got to #1 half a year ago playing a half schedule.

I don't think it will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

May 23rd, 2002, 10:30 PM
I think Lindsay can get back to no.1.

Martina probably could as well if she made the necessary changes to her game.

May 23rd, 2002, 10:36 PM
Well it certainly would be nice to see....but thats a tough climb and an even tougher prediction:confused:

May 23rd, 2002, 10:41 PM
Well Lindsay got her injury when she was ranked #1....

I dunno if she'll be winning Grand Slams, but if she makes mincemeat of most of the tier 2's she played like she did last year, she'll def be up there.

May 24th, 2002, 12:20 AM
Martina will not be 1 or 2 again.
Lindsay might.

May 24th, 2002, 12:42 AM
It's an eventual possibility for either, but far away. Lindsay is looking at next April, at the absolute soonest. Martina, no sooner than next July.

May 24th, 2002, 12:53 AM
Nothing is impossible. The tour has gotten a lot tougher now, but Martina and Lindsay are both very good players. I think they could both be #1 again, because all a player has to do is be consistent, and both of them are very consistent. With few points to defend they could become #1 & #2 at around this time next year.

But does it really matter? The rankings have no importance. They'll both still be good players no matter their rank. These days being #1 doesn't make you the best. Anyone in the top 10 is a slam contender (most of the time)

May 24th, 2002, 05:55 AM
i doubt martina could make it, although it's not impossible. Lindsay has a slight more chance, but it will take her time, especially with tons of points to defend from wimbledon to the chase. maybe next year

May 24th, 2002, 06:29 AM
Actually Rocksteady, Jelena would much rather play Martina than Venus, Lindsay or Serena.

"Becca - everyone falls out of the top ten eventually "

This is very true. Which is why I can't respect the predictions of someone who says year in year out that someone is going to fall out.

Cause eventually they are going to be right, and try to rub it in.

May 24th, 2002, 10:13 AM
i think they can, especially martina coz she plays a lot of tournaments and is consistent
