Serena bows out for summer

On Wednesday, the seven-time Slam champ issued a statement, which read:
"I know that there has been a lot of public speculation about me and my playing career. I want everyone, and in particular all of my fans who have meant so much to me throughout my career, to know that I will be back on the tennis court and that I fully intend to be competing on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in the coming months. These past months have been very frustrating for me personally, as I have had to take this time off to fully mend from a chronic knee injury. What I can tell you today based on what I am being told by my doctors is that I should be in a position to be playing again by the end of this summer. I want to thank all of those who have supported me during these difficult months and to let you know that I'm more excited than ever to resume my playing career as soon as my body is ready."

I want to repeat a couple of important things that I have heard from two of her friends over the past couple of months:

1. She's refuses to have her left knee operated again because she's scared to. She believes that the doctors botched her Augusts 2003 knee surgery, which is why she has played so inconsistently since then. She thinks that maybe she should have never had the surgery in the first place and doesn't want to risk another one, although she's been told to.

2. She's not sure when she wants to come back and isn't motivated to at this time. Even if you concede her a chronic injury (which I do), there's no reason in the world why she has been unable to play more than once in the past eight months other than the fact that she has let herself get terribly out of shape.

She hasn't given any indication to anyone involved in tennis that she seriously committed to returning, which is why the WTA has all but wiped their hands clear of her. Even if you are the most ardent Serena fan, there is no way you can be convinced that she's strident about returning this summer when every time you see a picture of her, she's at some party carrying an extra 30 pounds.

Enough said.

I always try not to include Venus Williams in any analysis of Serena because they are such different people. Venus' problems with injuries has much to do with her body type and her own admission that she doesn't schedule properly. Yes, Williams critics, she often plays too many weeks in a row– like last summer when she killed herself going from Wimby to Fed Cup to Stanford.

Venus pushed herself to return earlier than scheduled in Warsaw and, no matter the result in her match versus Martina Hingis on Thursday (I expect she will lose), it's a very positive sign for her fans that she wants to get down and dirty on the clay again. Expect some big-time results from her this summer.

Other Warsaw winners were Kim Clijsters, Elena Dementieva, Francesca Schiavone and – believe it or not – Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska who beat Tatiana Perebiynis 6-2, 6-0. Looks like Poland has a real player there.

How is it the doctor's fault if serena botches up her rehab? She should never have let herself get so out of shape. Recovery from a knee surgery takes a long time, and paying close attention to diet and physiotherapy is a must for proper recovery. Just lay all the blame on the doc, without doing your bit. They aren't gods.

Its reasonable for Serena to want to take time off to recover from the injury though. Its also understandable that she's played so little. She wouldn't want to aggravate that injury any further.

Oh what, doctors
never botch surgery's?

C'mon!

I think she's being wise in not playing at
all until she is sure she is well to handle
the rigors of playing pro tennis.

Come back when you're ready Serena.

Give the girl a break: she's clearly has a major injury. And why can't she go to parties? what else is she going to do?

Re: the botch job--- Serena certainly got the best Doctors around-- but operations are never 100%- especially with something like the knee.

I for one, think that without the injury Serena could have been right up there with Graf, Seles,Evert and Navi. Sad, really.

just wondering, would Venus domination over the next year (if it happens) motivate Serena?

What are you talking about? Serena was off tour for eight months after she had that surgery in 2003 which was plenty of time to heal and rehab. Furthermore, she wasn't out of shape when she returned in 2004. Fact is, after Serena returned to tour, she played one tournament (Maimi which she won), then promptly began having problems with her knee again in her very next tournament. She won 2 slams in 2003 before she had the surgery, but hasn't been able to play more than two tournaments in a row since having it. That's not a convincing arguement for a successful surgery.

I for one think that with proper dedication and kepping herself in shape she would have indeed been up there and without the injury.

What else? Well for starters she could stop thinking about herself. She should make her career threatning injury worse by playing anyway for the pleasure of tennis, the tour, and her fans so we all can say how stupid she was for playing to please us and making her career threatning injury worse.

I don't get why this Simpsons guy has a bug up his ass about Serena or why people care what his views of her are. And now he's like stalking her friends for information about her? Crazy!!!! I've heard of stalkers, but not celebrity stalkers!

A knee-surgery can't work miracles. The extent of recovery depends on how bad the damage was before the surgery, and the stresses the the repaired joint has to take subsequently. Preparing the repaired joint to take extreme stresses such as those involved in playing tennis depends on how dilligent serena was with the recovery programme. There's no guarantee that a knee surgery will be successful in the first place. Thats why Safin didn't want one either. Some surgeries have a great outlook, depending on which part of the joint is affected to what extent. Some injuries are more serious than others, and have a worse outlook. Besides, Serena's game is very intense and physically taxing, so its no surprise that the joint is giving her recurrent problems. Lets just jump on the doc without knowing exactly what the prognosis was in the first place.

On March 30th, the Sun-Sentinel reported: "Doctors have given medical clearances for Venus and Serena Williams to resume practicing, according to a source.

The sisters are expected to return to the court in the next two or three days and are hopeful of rejoining the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour for the Family Circle Cup April 10-16."

if anyone thinks matt cronin or his sources aren't credible you should know that he was the first to find out that myskina's mom was ill. she's still very mad at him for writing about it before she said anything publically.

Cronie and Weirthless kill me with their inside information gathering. Anytime they mention Serena these days it's nothing but pure gossip and speculation. A few of Serena's good friends has spilled their guts to these two mental midgets? I think someone's selling wolf tickets.

Anyways, half the stuff written in this little piece sounds like things posters have said here. It would be nice if they stopped stealing information from message boards.:tape:

And I see spiceboy(the Williams sisters biggest fan) has searched high and low for another Williams piece. Keep up the good work spicey!!

A lawsuit would be considered jumping on the doc, someone claiming a "friend of yours" told him you maybe questioning the surgery's success is hardly "jumping on the doc."

Doctors are not miracle workers; some do their best and still don't get the results they wanted. This is part of the reason why Marat doesn't want to have his surgery; because he's afraid it might not be successful.

OTOH, Serena is also partly responsible for her condition because I have read interviews where Serena admitted that she went against her doctor's advice and played when she shouldn't have.

I don't know what contributed to this injury initially; if it was her bad training and scheduling practices, her body type, her style of play or whatever, but she certainly has failed to managed this injury properly.

To make matters worse she has allowed herself to gain so much weight, which I'm sure is not much better for a bum knee.

Maybe she can try what Marat is trying; to give herself proper healing time and avoid the surgery for as long as she still can play. Of course after she retires she won't need the surgery becuase it doen't seem to be hampering her off-court activities.

Come on people do you really believe this Corrin guy? He always has something negative to say about Serena what else is new. Its like is their a Williams Haters Association going on in America or something? I am so surprised that Serena Williams a tennis legend gets so much grief in her own country? Why is America so biased against her?

Actually she's quite popular with the general public in America, everybody agrees she's a great tennis player. She's one of the few female athletes (along with Venus) that many male athletes respect for her athleticism. It's those who move in tennis circles that give Serena the hardest time.

He was also the first guy to say that Capriati was dating a porn star, and to say Justine's career will be over in 2006, while Kim wins the AO 2006.

Sources? More like asking certain people things, and getting the type of reply he wants.
