Article

Swiss youth will take on Japanese experience when the two nations meet in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II tie in Tokyo. The most experienced of Switzerland’s four teenagers Timea Bacsinszky was given the chance to lead by example when the draw came out as follows:

Aiko Nakamura (JPN) v Timea Bacsinszky (SUI)
Ai Sugiyama (JPN) v Stefanie Vögele (SUI)
Ai Sugiyama (JPN) v Timea Bacsinszky (SUI)
Aiko Nakamura (JPN) v Stefanie Vögele (SUI)
Shinobu Asagoe/Ai Sugiyama (JPN) v Timea Bacsinszky/Stefania Boffa (SUI)

Japanese huge favourites

The Japanese are huge favourites in this first round tie, which will be played in the Ariake Colosseum, which has a capacity of 10,000. For the first time in two years, captain Minoru Ueda can count on his best players with Ai Sugiyama and Shinobu Asagoe returning to Fed Cup action. Sugiyama is the third-most successful Japanese Fed Cup player of all time with a total of 19 wins (singles and doubles) in 20 ties. With Sugiyama, Asagoe, Aiko Nakamura and Akiko Morigami, captain Ueda has the luxury of four Top 100 Players in his team, all aged 22 years and older.

Switzerland, “not here just to lose”

The Swiss, on the other hand, have to make do without their most illustrious players Patty Schnyder and Martina Hingis. Swiss Captain Severin Lüthi therefore leads a very young group of girls into this contest: “This is a team with a bright future.”

He still opted for his two most experienced players to start the singles matches on Saturday. 16-year-old Timea Bacsinszky proved her capability by almost single-handedly winning last year’s World Group II tie against Slovak Republic with three victories. Stephanie Vögele is the same age and made a promising start in last year’s play-off-match against Austria, losing to the higher-ranked Yvonne Meusburger after holding two set points. Lüthi promises the home team a good battle: “We haven’t come here just to lose,” he said after Friday’s draw.

Tough decisions for Japanese

The Japanese are not taking this contest lightly, despite having much better world rankings:

“It would be stupid to think that we don’t need our best tennis to win”, world No. 23 Ai Sugiyama pointed out. In a small surprise, captain Ueda opted for 22-year-old Nakamura as second singles player next to Sugiyama. She’s the second-ranked Japanese player at the moment, but only made her debut in last year’s Fed Cup competition. The more-experienced Asagoe only returned to Japan from the USA on Monday and joined the team on Wednesday, which may be a reason for the captain’s decision. It wasn’t an easy one:

“We have so many good players”, Ueda admitted. “Nakamura is in very good physical condition.” Smiling, he added, that it was his sixth sense that chose Nakamura, who is the youngest Japanese player, but still a hefty six years older than her Swiss opponent.

For the doubles that will close out the tie on Sunday afternoon, the captains had no surprises in store. The experienced pair of Sugiyama and Asagoe is scheduled to play for Japan, Bacsinszky and newcomer Stefania Boffa for the Swiss team. This line-up, however, can be changed up to 15 minutes after the completion of the fourth singles rubber.

Don't let the Swiss win a single match!

Maybe Nakamura's a good choice as the 2nd player, seeing as Shinobu doesn't look to be in her best form at the moment. Plus Shinobu's doing well in doubles so far.

Ai is a bit hurt on her left leg... Didn't seem like she moved really well. She almost decided not to play yesterday...but she won anyway... whew.

Aiko said Bacsinszky used a lot loop balls during the second set...but during the third set, she became more aggressive, and Bacsinszky made lots of errors.
a funny comment from Bascinszky, "I am not calm at all on- and off- court."...

Some pictures... (this is from a JTA's blog page, you can see pictures at least).

Ai's injury isn't bad at all. She just feels uncomfortable on her left leg. She said she couldn't move well on court.

Shino will play on the first match of Day 2.
