Aussie cheerleaders told to cover up midriffs

Associated Press

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Australian cheerleaders have been banned from baring midriffs by officials of the sport who fear displays of skin may encourage eating disorders, a Sunday newspaper reported

So is it because the story is only 5 hours old, that there hasn't been much repercussion? Or is this move solely in response to a few puritan fans kicking up a fuss? Gymnastics Australia's cheerleading program manager Nerine Cooper told the Telegraph the directive to tame uniforms, which followed similar moves overseas, was needed because cheerleaders often performed in front of family groups.I originally found the story interesting because we had something similar happen in America some years ago. :o

...and also, it gave me an excuse to post some professional cheerleader pics.

Australia is not really known for following conservative trends, but then again... we are starting to follow certain countries.

I just read in our local paper that these new rules {or whatever they are} won't affect our sporting cheerleaders...e.g - the Cowboys {Rugby League}and Crocodiles {Basketball}...and other top line sporting cheerleaders.
The rules were bought out for the gymnastic cheerleaders {who compete}because they think it is promoting anorexia in high schools and such.

Whereas we don't even have a "college" cheerleading team at any Uni I know of. Our cheerleaders are a bit different than in the US! :p Usually our cheerleaders just come from a dancing background - usually we don't really have them at high schools and stuff, coz well here msot high schools don't have the interschool sports programs that the US has.
