I want a thread for Julia, she is a great girl, very pretty and really kind and friendly to me when I met her. Her ranking is just in the top 200 due to injuries but I hope she makes the top 100 again soon :wavey:

Vakulenko Seeks To Put Dark Days In The Past
http://www.sportsmediainc.net/tennisweek/VakulenkoGoodAndyKentla.jpg
Photo By Andy Kentla By Tennis Week
04/12/2006

Julia Vakulenko survived a scary storm on Saturday with a smile on her face reflecting the calm that came from fighting through the turbulent times of a dark depression to the bright sight of light. Enlightend by the experience, the 193rd-ranked Vakulenko earned her first victory of the year, topping 10th-seeded Jelena Jankovic, 7-6(5), 7-5, in a one hour, 50-minute match on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Vakulenko followed that win by converting all six break points she earned in today's 6-1, 6-2 second-round sweep of Italy's Antonella Serra Zanetti in a match that panned 49 minutes. Next up for Vakulenko is a round of 16 meeting with seventh-seeded Dinara Safina, who scored a 7-5, 7-5, triumph over Vera Zvonareva.

Vakulenko arrived in Charleston winless in four matches this season, but displayed pure desire in a hard-fought win. Overcoming six double faults, the 22-year-old Vakulenko won the match by refusing to lose her aggressive approach.

"I think the two most important keys to the match was first, I would not get mad with myself when I made mistakes and second, when I would hit the ball hard from the baseline I was really trying to go forward as much as I can and I was playing pretty well at the net," Vakulenko told Tennis Week shortly after her victory today. "I have been working with (coach) Vic Braden on my serve and trying to get more first serves in to set up the points. I like playing against the better players because it forces you to play well. She played really well and I was very happy with the way I played. For me, the confidence comes not so much from winning, but from playing well and I think I played well today."

The sight of Vakulenko racing toward the frontcourt today was a remarkable step forward given the fact she struggled severely to simply plant her feet on the floor and start her day less than a year ago. It was Vakulenko's first main draw victory since last June when she defeated Tathiana Garbin, 6-2, 6-4, in the opening round of Wimbledon before bowing to 12th-seeded Mary Pierce, 4-6, 7-6(7), 9-7. Shortly after she lost to Garbin in Los Angeles last August, Vakulenko was forced to face the the most disturbing period of her life. She fell into a deep, debilitating depression that made the mere act of getting out of bed in the morning a daily battle she didn't always win and caused her to take time off from tennis and contemplate the course of her life. "I didn't really play tennis for months since last summer because of depression," Vakulenko told Tennis Week. "It was a depression I went through. It's like I had to put everything into the right perspective and find out what life is about and what am I doing here because I didn't want to live like the way I was living anymore. It's much more than tennis because when you finish with tennis you have to go on with your life. I'm not just a tennis player, there's more to life than tennis, and these are the things that I had to put into perspective."

A sensitive soul, Vakulenko says she fell into an emotional void that escalated into desolation leaving her feeling empty and alone while questioning the world around her and her place in it.

"A day would pass then another day and another day and I wasn't feeling any better," Vakulenko said. "Many things are not the way you want them to be in life and feeling that would make me really sad and I would not want to fight it. It was a very difficult time."

Ultimately, the woman who speaks fluent English, Spanish and Russian sought solace in reading and says she found spiritual strength in a statement she read from Mother Theresa that precipitated an awakening arriving with her eyes closed.

"The thing that really helped me was I read this quote from Mother Theresa that basically said even if you do all you can there will always be people who do not like you, but it's not about you and them and it's about you and God and they cannot stop you from being who you are," Vakulenko said. "I met a couple of good missionaries from France who have helped me very much. I didn't know who God was until going through this entire experience, but this experience has helped me learn to trust God with my eyes closed and that belief has made the biggest difference in my life."

Life turned dark again when Vakulenko stared down a violent storm that struck Charleston on Saturday in the midst of her qualifying match against Maria Emilia Salerni and chased both players from the court.

"It was scary. It was really starting to get dark, and we told the umpire we really needed the lights because we couldn't see. Right when he called to have the lights turned on, there was lightning and the umpire said, 'You have to go inside.' ," Vakulenko told The Charleston Post and Courier, revealing she was so drawn to the storm she ran up the stairs to the second floor of the clubhouse to stare into its eye. "I never saw a tornado, so it was exciting."

Since her return to the WTA Tour in March, Vakulenko said she finds herself seeing brightness in bleakness.

"I'm just so happy to be out here playing tennis and having fun doing it," Vakulenko said. "When they told me on Sunday I'd have to play two matches I told the lady from the WTA 'I'll play three matches if I have to — you and me can meet at 6 a.m. to play the first one.' This is where I want to be and this is what I want to be doing."

That is the article I mentioned :)

That is a beautiful article, she has such a great attitude towards the game. Like at Strasbourg last year, I just walked around a corner with my Dad and saw her and I was like to him really loudly "OMG Its Julia Vakulenko" and Julia obviously heard me and walked up and said hello to me :)

Then when she lost to Kachlikova she still signed autographs a few hours later outside the players lounge :)

I hope I see her again this year

Julia's Comeback
April 20, 2006 -

http://images.acswebnetworks.com/qimages/acs/ilapp1_10/julia_focus_walk_black.jpg

Julia focusing before hitting a ball during practice with Scotty.

The following is a copy of a letter hand written by Julia Vakulenko in February 2006 and given to Scott Paschal. Julia wrote this letter for ICTA to share on our web site, or however we decided would be appropriate. Julia stated ICTA could edit this letter as needed, but we prefer to publish the letter as written. Julia's new start in life is indeed a miracle.

We pray this letter, and the article following the letter written by ICTA President, Scott Paschal, will shed some light into the daily struggles and hardships of professional tennis players.

Julia's letter...

"I want to tell you how great and amazing our God is. And how much He loves us. This is my experience of His love.

I was having the worst period of my life, if you can even call it life. Because I did not want to live, I didn't have any hope and nothing made sense living for. I was very disappionted with myself and with everything that I did, so I did not want to try or live anymore.

I could not find peace in any place, and I did look for it everywhere I could, many places not good.

So it was Christmas night and I was just trying to live till the end of the day, but it seemed like there is no tomorrow. I wanted to change and to start it all over, just to be different and new. To have new hope.

And that night I received and email from Scotty, and it was a gift from God.

And I could feel inside that God did not forget about me, that He still loves me and has a good plan for me.

So finally I see that God is the only real thing in my life and is the only one who can give me peace. And to know that He loves you and accepts you just the way you are, makes you a different person.

So now I am here (editor's note: in Florida with ICTA), I got a new hope, a new joy, and new family that is so wonderful and loving.

It is just so great to see how God uses Scotty and his big heart to help God's children. Scotty is my new father and I am very grateful to God for loving me so much." Julia

You are going to hate me for saying this but I hope she doesn't get into the qualifying competition. And if she does get in I hope she loses. But to be honest I think if she gets into the qualifying I expect her to make it the the main draw and quite possibly win several matches.

The reason I'm hoping she doesn't have success at Rosmalen is that if she gets into the main draw at Rosmalen she will not be able to play the qualifying at Roehampton for Wimbledon. I live in London and I really want to see her play again at Roehampton and also want to see her do well at Wimbledon again. It would be a real shame for Julia to miss Wimbledon where I think she has her best chance of going far in a Grand Slam.

Infact it will be her 1st quarterfinal in over three years. So this is big :bounce:

Good luck Julia,

i think julia has a very good draw, she has a good chance of making the 3rd round where she could play ivanovic, that would be a tough match but is winnable, then hantuchova is a likely 4th round opponent. i think julia would be the favourite in that match. if julia plays well she has a chance of going fairly deep here.

She could very well have folded at 4-1 down but I was really impressed with how she fought back. Very unlucky to be broken at 6-5 the way she was and in the end Serena's serve was just too good. Yes, oooh, I saw the end of the Bartoli match (they showed it before the semis yesterday) and it did seem pretty intense. Marion was playing very well and moving well despite her injury (much better than against Patty yesterday) but Julia did put an error or two in towards the end. I thought she played well though but Marion was just in that zone she gets into sometimes. I wanted a Julia/Dani US Open rematch in the final, that would have been nice.

This week though, nice draw I agree. Major plus not being in the same half as Davenport (poor Angelique, Tier III, you're seeded and you draw one of the best players of the last 10 years in the first round), but someone outside the top hundred followed by a wildcard or a qualifier (even if it could be a girl playing at home) is what you'd want to get to a QF. Unlucky to be in Nicole's half rather than Vera's but I'd take Nicole at the semi and avoiding Lindsay than having both in her half.

Nice draw, make the most of it Julia!

Julia just lost in the final 4-6 / 1-6
I hope the injury is not too big and you can finish the year nicely in Interclubs and ITFs
But the most important is that she is now rank 32 and ready for a great year next year!

I lost the count of her DF's.

Julia's ankle is not so good right now, so probably no Deauville ITF for her, but she may play in Poitiers next week, she will probably have a WC for it, and then French interclubs for Denain (same team as Schiavone, Black, Bammer, Koryttseva, Wickmayer, Schaul, Kremer, ...)

Julia played doubles match for Denain in French interclubs yesterday, and won with Caroline Maes. I did not see her on Deauville doubles listing, so I figure she does not play there. But probably Poitiers.
I heard her ankle is still sore, but it does not seem as bad as for the left one in Birmingham earlier this year.

Julia played French Interclubs last sunday and lost her singles match against Jidkova in third set (6-4) and her doubles match with Liga Dekmeijere in super tie break.

She played again yesterday in Poitiers ITF against Domachowska and lead 6-3 before retiring because of her right ankle (the one she injured in Quebec).

She'll have a preparation program in Australia with Physical trainer this winter to be ready for Australian season.

thanks:)

hey Stefi does she has a coach?

stefi62
Nov 25th, 2007, 10:56 PM
He does not like to be called a coach, more an advisor, but she travels with Christian Filhol, who also works with Cara Black, Mary Pierce, Mariya Koryttseva, among others. Someone very nice

Julia did not play league matches this week end, I hope she is okay...
