When was the last time Alona played in pink? Perhaps that colour will bring her more luck and allthough I absolutely hate pink I won't mind as long as she keeps winning :p

Now it's time to return to Top 20

btw, with that pink dress there's a great resemblence between her and Dementieva who I recall wore a similar dress around 2008 IIRC.

Alona played really well, covering even balls that were really wide, hitting great shots on the run, attacking more than usual. Maybe the best I've seen Alona play in the last year. JJ was quite bad, lots of errors, didn't even force Alona to serve it out. I'm wasn't sure whether Alona could sustain that level in the third set, so it was good for her that they finished in straight sets. And she finally gets a win over JJ- no one gets a 10-0 record on Alona. Seriously, that was quite impressive from Alona.

1st time into the rnd of 16, 1st win over JJ- all in all a very good week so far.

Govortsova can be pretty shaky mentally when it comes to closing out sets or matches against higher-ranked opponents, and she hasn't exactly been setting the tour on fire in 2010, so a third set bagel against her is pretty embarrassing.

Alona hasn't been the same since that Fed Cup loss to Italy. Heck, she hasn't won a match since. :tape:
She had such a great start to the year...

Fed Cup will be another tough assignment for Alona. She'll have to win both her singles matches for Ukraine to have any chance, and even then it might not be enough. It's hard to see the Australians losing the doubles, so Koryttseva will have to perform well too.

Alona lost the match 6-0, 3-6 5-7. :o Another Fed Cup "fail".
She broke Rodionova when the "Aussie" was serving for the match, saved a bunch of BPs on her own serve in the next game but eventually got broken anyway, and Rodionova managed to serve it out this time.

Things are looking grim for Ukraine.

bad news guys and gals, alona is injured

http://www.fedcup.com/news/newsarticle.asp?articleid=12991

Australia celebrates return to World Group

Australia is back in the Fed Cup World Group for the first time since 2004, after Sam Stosur sealed its place with a 76 63 victory over Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok in their World Group play-off tie.

Stosur, the world No. 10, has extended her unbeaten run in Fed Cup to 13 matches, making it a dream month for the Aussie after winning the title at Charleston on clay a week ago.

Kichenok, ranked No. 289 and in the world and playing her first ever Fed Cup match, provided some unexpected drama at the Palace of Sports Lokomotiv in Kharkiv, by pushing Stosur to a first-set tiebreak and also saving three match points when the Australian raced to a 40-0 lead on the Ukrainian serve.

Stosur was originally scheduled to meet Alona Bondarenko, Ukraine’s No. 1, but the No. 25 was forced to pull out due to injury.

The opening day of the tie saw Anastasia Rodionova make a dream debut for Australia, as she staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Bondarenko in three sets. Stosur then put the away team in the driving seat with victory over Mariya Koryttseva.

More soon...

Luckily Alona always does well in Warsaw albeit with Dementieva and Li Na the opposition is tougher then last year (I don't see Wozniacki doing that well because of that questionable ankle and Bartoli is still a great unknown especially with RG around the corner, so I kinda predict she just wants some match practice rather then a serious shot at the title).

A bit of a disaster in preparation for the US Open for Alona really, losing the last match to Marion. Meaning only one match won :help: although she did finally win a tiebreak! Good news though that Alona is seeded and faces Dushevina first round, in a rematch of the French Open. Alona fought back to win that last time, so fingers crossed. If she wins Oudin is probably next 2nd round  and Schiavone 3rd round. I was referring to the level of play Alona has been displaying of late as being pathetic, not in actual fact to the opponent as I'm well aware Vinci is capable of causing problems even for the top players. I agree she will be lucky to mantain her position if she carries on the same and I doubt she will be now after Moscow...

As to Alona's draw for Moscow she faces a Russian wildcard first round in Gavrilova who I believe is a talented junior, then will face either MJMS or Kudryatseva next and seeded to be Pavlyuchenkova after.
Potentially then a better draw than first thought, she could make the quarters, but certainly won't be easy if she plays like her current form.

I don't think that it's anything major but it is slightly puzzling. If anything I would have expected her to come back a bit heavier. It is very early in her return to the game, she may look different in six months. I think she's just happy to be healthy and back on the tour.

I have to say she does look waif thin in the photos but maybe she's just not been able to do much physio and isn't toned like before she was injured. Hopefully there will be a stream to see if she plays any better.

She looks like she lost some strength during her time off. I guess she was unable to do much strength training during that time. Hopefully she will regain it in the coming months.

Alona has one of the worst possible draws for the first round of RG against JJ. :tears: That's a tough enough match up for her when in shape and in form, but on her second match back... :help: Still, I wouldn't have expected much yet whoever it was.

   Maybe, optimistically thinking, she will not feel any pressure and will just play relaxed and hit stunning shots. :tape: :help:

Unfortunately she wasn't able to put up that much of a fight, she went down to JJ 3 and 1. She really does look like she needs another month or two before she'll be match fit, but maybe she'll look better (and healthier) at Wimbledon.

My stream was irritatingly awful so I didn't see much but agreed she seems much too fragile to be playing a grand slam match at the moment. Having said that she rallied well a few times and fought a little at the end. She didn't get blown off the court either, so she can look to stengthen everything with more match play and time. The US Open would be a realistic goal to see how much she can improve by then.

Alona

It was a bad 1st round draw for her and she just needs more matches.

Good point is that she looked less pale and healthier than last week in Strasbourg. :) Rest well and take care of yourself Alonka!

 Lost to Meusburger in Bad Gastein, 3 and 6 (6) after fighting back from 5-1 down in the second to serve for the set at 6-5 (unfortunately she played a poor game there and lost serve).

I do think she is improving a little though. She still needs to gain some muscle mass but I am aware that women find that more difficult than men, so it might take her a while. Hopefully before the year is out she looks healthier and stronger and is playing better.

I agree she looks better than she did than in other Strasbourg pics of her, she seems to have some colour in her cheeks and doesn't look quite so skeletal. I havn't seen her play of late but that extra muscle mass might be the 10% or so extra she needs to win matches like these which you would normally expect her to win.

I guess the improvement is happening, just not quick enough to translate into expected victorys against the likes of Meusburger. The fightback is an encouraging sign, patience is still the key I suppose.

Will she use her SR for the US Open or will she be in qualies?
