"After US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was stretched to three sets at the second round of Beijing Open by the little-known qualifier Li Na, many thought the Chinese player will make some noise in the future.
Well, it didnt take long for that noise to be heard from the 22-year-old as Li won her first WTA tour title the following week at the Guangzhou Open and takes home honors as this week's WTATour.com Player of the Week."

Wow, is that a smile, Na? :lol:That IS a smile:D It took me quite some time to decide this photo, the other two looks serious and another one with a forced smile It's not easy for her to win the title after 2 years of absence from tournaments with zero ranking.
CTA didnt give her WC for China open and Guangzhou Open, bcs she was not a member of the National Team then, had to play from qualifier  :(

Below is a pic of Na at 19 years old, how sweet she smiles :D

Na Li: China’s tennis awakening

"Now aged 23, Li has left her tennis breakthrough late, having endured numerous fruitless seasons due to injury. Last October, she became the first Chinese player in history to win on the WTA circuit, after coming through the qualifiers in front of her home crowd at Guangzhou. A finalist on clay at Estoril this season, she will be watched closely in Paris, as will several of her compatriots who are following the path she has forged into the world of professional tennis."

Na led the last two sets but ended up 6-4 6-7(4) 5-7. Match was suspended several times by rain and lasted 4 hours)

This 1st round exit made her very disappointed! She denied that rain, injury and home crowd could possibly be the reasons for the loss, but expressed her dissatisfaction that she was the only one without a formal coach since comeback to National Team. The coaching was holding her back with everybody following the same training plan which was aimless! (It's true and proved by jie in her interview.) She felt hopeless having no special plan for her since injured (May-Sept)...
Being the 1st one again to defy authority, she certainly received overwhelming pressure from all sidedness...

Na did not complain but gave herself a score of 95 poinets for her performance :)

At 1/4, when leading 5-1 in the 3rd set, Na suddenly squatted down for a cramp in the leg...
No chance to defend her title!! But just three weeks ago in Bali Open, She beat Zi 6-3 6-4...)

Na's nagative comments about coaching caused a great sensation! The head coach kept refuting her openly:
"She's always losing temper and complaining about others after losing matches." "How come her ranking is rising and her level is not improving as she said? It's illogical." "We'll strengthern moral qualities education...."
He's a crap, who joined National Team in 2005 like Na. Na's ranking started falling since early May...
On the contrary, in 2004 China Open, Na never complained when she lost to Sveta...

The 2nd half of 2005 is disaster for Na, bcs of such controversies plus missing of a lot of matches due to injuries. Until echoed by Shuai end of the year, CTA felt pressure and changed attitude, started hiring foreign coaches.

Na won singles title in National Olympics.

2000-2001, glorious time for Na in China, but seldom played in WTA tournaments since tennis was much less invested compared with other sports in China, and focused more on Asian Games, Olympics, Feb Cup, ITF etc.

Oct. Heineken Open, Shanghai, Na ousted former Chinese no.1,Yi Jingqian (top69) the 1st round

Set.19, 2000, Sidney Olympics
Na played Sanches, the three GS owner 1-6 5-7, the 1st round (No photos available now)
I think she was nervous the 1st set for lack of experience in big games.

Na got 19 ITF singles titles, perhaps the most ITF title owner in singles ever! Also, 16 ITF doubles titles!!

A player of this level would have moved to play at higher level in WTA tour instead of wasting talent here.

It's partly because tennis is far from taking a mainstream place in China. Another reason is when she came back after 25 months of absence, she got no ranking and had to play from ITF, even though tennis is attracting more attention and support since Ting/TianTian won an Olympic gold in 2004.

Is Na married? I see what could be a wedding ring, but maybe in Chinese culture wearing that style ring on the left ring finger doesn't mean the same thing..

Since this thread started in Mar 2006 with the intention to post pictures from 1999-2005, and that some images are being removed from the original pages, have to keep it updated whenever something "new" are found out from various sources.
